It has some really good performances by ROC and Lucy and even Ted Raimi had a chance to make Joxer more than comic relief. First off I thought the director did a pretty good job of misdirecting the audience in the first meeting between Xena and the supposed Gabrielle. Xena is properly stunned to see Gabrielle (the scene is composed of some the most beautiful footage of Lucy) and a seemingly happy Gabrielle. After that the audience senses something amiss. Gabrielle seems off - her reunion with Xena is oddly unemotional, she doesn't seem all that upset at seeing the bloodily corpse hanging from the trees, and finally in the confrontation with monster in the barn she never lefts a finger to help Xena - very odd behavior indeed. Of course it doesn't take long for Xena to figure out that Gabrielle is actually Hope and the monster, the Deliverer. After that we watch Xena revert once more back into the haunted person she was in Sin Trade. Xena with her vision was sure Gabrielle was alive now she sees her hopes dashed. Joxer is perhaps the only one who realizes how badly Xena is damaged by her disillusionment and perceptively states that she is "more badly hurt than she thinks". Xena is now determined to kill Hope - in a wonderful scene in the farm yard Xena methodically sharpens her sword as Joxer prattles on but when Joxer says they will kill both Hope and her son Xena has a blissful smile on her face - in an episode full of monsters that is a truly frightening moment. Xena has a plan to follow Hope to the Deliver's lair. She has told Hope that she wounded the monster hoping that she would go to her son. Sure enough she does. ROC is wonderful in her scene with the monster. Hope and her son are a sight to behold. The Deliverer is hideous but oddly touching as a creature who craves his mother's affections. Hope careens from a cold detachment as she checks her boy out for injuries to cloyingly sweet as she caresses her son and she giddily plots Xena's murder (now we know why she was so happy to see Xena again, she wants another crack at her). We then have another nice piece of misdirection. We see Xena and Joxer both following Hope. At first we believe they are following the same person - then both confront their prey. Joxer is knocked for a loop by Hope and Xena is knocked for another kind of loop when she meets the real Gabrielle. The reunion between Xena and Gabrielle is what every fan wanted I think. Very emotional with Xena being very tender with Gabrielle - a nice touch is what I believe to have been an adlib by Lucy when she calls Gabrielle sweetheart. Gabrielle is obviously emotionally fragile but rallies enough to once again go on the hunt for Hope. Xena returns to the farm only to discover that Hope has convinced the family that Xena has beaten her or worse. Gabrielle's father orders her from the house. Xena goes off to find the Deliverer and to incidentally rescue Joxer. Back at the farm Gabrielle sneaks into the house to warn her family only to confront Hope. ROC is once again very good in a difficult scene. Hope however evil has a nice sense of sardonic humor. When Gabrielle asks why she isn't dead Hope answers "that wasn't for your lack of trying" and reveals that she was saved by Dahak and the she was "always Daddy's little girl." Hope is of course still obsessed with the fact that she believes Gabrielle loves Xena more than her. ROC's Gabrielle, on the hand, give the scene a nice sense of wistful sadness - she still loves her daughter but knows she must be stopped. To that end she makes a hasty retreat. Xena meanwhile has been pursued to the barn by a hungry Deliverer who is beating the pulp out of her. Suddenly Mommy appears and calls off the Deliverer. We soon realizes it's Gabrielle , practically shaking with horror and disgust she cradles her grandson as Xena stabs him in the back. Just then the real Hope walks in and is stabbed by her furious son. In a moment of real pathos the Deliverer realizes he has killed his mother in mistake and cries out for her, taking her in his arms, and Hope dying embraces him while looking into her mother's eyes. Gabrielle watches as her daughter and grandson die and is compelled to go to them stopped only by Xena. The final scene sets up what will be one of the themes of season 4. Gabrielle is confused - life for her doesn't make sense any longer, she is lost. Xena says for her Gabrielle is her answer but together they will search for Gabrielle's way. The last shot echoes the last shot from The Quest, Gabrielle sits with her head on Xena's shoulder - instead of Xena being back from the dead now it's Gabrielle who is back but in a lot worse shape. This is episode has a lot going on. In addition to the above plot points, we have an interesting visit with Gabrielle's confused family. There is a wonderful awkward moment between Xena and Heroditus - it is obvious that Xena is viewed as a bad influence on his little girl. Heroditus is angry by the changes in his daughter and he blames Xena - indeed the whole family seems a bit edge. The real Gabrielle sees her mother crying and Lila doesn't seem overly surprised when Gabby announces that there is an imposter in the house. It would have been interesting to see Hope's interaction with Gabrielle's family - I'm sure it was a bit surreal. The other interesting subtheme is the nature of family. We Hope and the Deliver's long for the love of a family yet incapable of achieving it because they are only tools in Dahak's grand scheme. Heroditus and Hecuba happy to have their oldest daughter home only to discover that she is a stranger and they can't figure out why. We have Lila who's sisterly affections almost get her killed. Then we have Xena and Gabrielle desperately trying to get back with their true family - each other. One extraneous point to ponder - Both Hope and Gabrielle say they sent word to Xena. How is this done? Is the a post office box in Xena's name? Do you just tell various traveler - "If you see a six foot woman warrior in leather tell her that her sidekick bard is over at the Sisters of Gaia Hospice next to the Halls of War"? She says something like, "We're all asking them if they can do an American accent" or something like that. And in fact, in the FIN-DC DVD commentary, LL roundly makes fun of a fellow Kiwi (I think the actor who played Kao) for mispronouncing a word (bad American accent). Also, in the E! Celebrity Profile from Fall 2000?? (again, thanks to a kind Xenite), RTapert is interviewed about LL's casting and expressed concern about whether a "local girl" could do an American accent. So, yes, someone representing RenPics was quoted saying that it was "standard", LL herself criticizes an actor when they don't use it properly, RTapert was concerned about it, and in fact, it's a rare ocassion when we don't hear the "required" American accent.
