Well, the problem is probably your dialect and the average intellect of the U.S. TV exec. They probably think we won't understand Kiwis. Look how long it took for most OZ accents to become acceptable to U.S. media buyers! Now, I find the Kiwi dialect charming and sexy. (And it doesn't even have to be Lucy speaking!) It is so damn cute. I love the vowel combos. The long Os but the very short Es. And then there are the incredibly sharp cutoffs at the end of stuff like THs. Great stuff. The structure is really very similar to a lot of our Southern dialects. And that might be a good smart-ass description-- Someone from the American South, trying to sound "British ." :~) (Maybe something to do with some Southern dialects being so close to their Celtic origins?) Actually, when I came into the middle of this kids show, at first, I couldn't quite figure out where the hell it was taking place. The kids accents were so "thick" and they all sounded alike. Then some of the adult actors came on. And the light dawned. ;~) I guess they must figuratively beat it out of the NZ actors as they get older. :~} But still, all the kids were understandable, and crystal clear to me. It's one of the most clear Commonwealth dialects, I've heard. I don't get this whole myth about how the Kiwi is so hard to understand. But then again, ears aren't born equal. I think it depend on which ears are listening to which English speaker. I have some difficulty with a few British dialects. I was just watching a little of a BBC landscaping show, and there was a older woman from Scotland, and I couldn't understand one word she was saying! ************************************************************************* *************************** "Always keep your bowler on in times of stress and watch out for diabolical masterminds." - --EMMA PEEL ************************************************************************* *************************** ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
