Well, having told Sky1 here to take a running jump (because they replaced Herc & Xena on Saturday night with rugby football just once too often!) I am now 'following' Season 5 Herc and S5 Xena off videotape. This gets me over the compulsive feeling that XWP's 'on' and I can't watch it. ;) > also, although i do have a tolerably good imagination, fanfic has just > never done it for me. i like to watch the show. reading about it, even w/ > the grabs, just ain't the same. got to have the visuals. Yes. I'd rather read interviews with the cast / crew / writers. Just a feeling I have that, as you say, reading fanfic isn't the same. And a strange sort of feeling that _reading_ about the characters may somehow dilute or devalue the experience I get from _watching_ the characters. (I don't know if that makes any sense?) I suppose it's because of a feeling that it's somehow a substitute - and therefore presumptively inferior - to the 'real thing'. (This has nothing to do with the actual quality of the fanfic, btw). But this is why I often don't read 'the book of' my favourite TV series or movie. Because without the actors and directors to make it come to life, it just ain't the same. And the same applies in reverse in respect of books I like that get made into movies or TV - usually I like the book because the writer has a particular talent for description or a particularly good turn of phrase which is lost in production. I can only think of one work where I liked both books and TV equally - Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy - and there, the two are very different works, such that I like them for quite different qualities. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. And yes, the infernal device really was straight out of James Bond, wasn't it? The only difference is that James Bond's villains could presumably say "We have the technology" [to create such a device] where it seems really out of place in Xenaland. I'm sure it should have been possible to come up with a less mechanically improbable scenario - how about X and G are trapped on a rock with _one_ hungry shark circling round and the water rising? First one in gets eaten, other one gets away. > My other big problem was Lila's and Sarah's willingness to betray Xena. Yes, they certainly earned themselves a good slapping at the very least, IMO. Actually, this is the *second* time that's happened - in Legacy, I was sooo looking forwards to seeing the insufferable favourite wife getting a well-deserved smack in the chops from Xena, and then she turns out to be Gabby's long-lost sister and all is forgiven. Aaargh! Just another reason that ep's on my Least Favourite list. > Anyway I do wish it could have been produced. Not as replacement for FIN > but as a replacement for Soul Possession. It might have lead nicely into > FIN because after Fallen Xena wanting to take off for Egypt, for some R&R, > would have made some sense. > > CherylA I quite liked SP. I agree, Fallen could have been an interesting ep but, as indicated, I think a bit of work on the script would have helped. Also Xena would have had to get her chacky back. This ep certainly posed a problem for Xena and Gabs. But since the topic's been raised, TPTB never gave Xena any *really* hard moral choices, IIRC. The hardest one she ever faced was to choose between doing two good things, such as for example either saving Gabs or saving Greece in OAAA. But just suppose - umm, to take some story elements from Back in the Bottle and Between the Lines - that a really *good* person has discovered the secret of the Black Powder, and Xena is imprisoned in a cell with that person and knows that Khindin/Alti *will* be able to read that person's mind and discover the secret. And there is absolutely no way that Xena can prevent this. Other than one - should she murder that person? (This is good Xena I'm talking about now, not Evil Xena). Interestingly, TPTB did almost do that on Herc - to Iolaus. Dahak showed Iolaus a man about to fall to his death and said "I'm giving you the power to save him." But as Iolaus starts to do so Dahak says "He's a thief and if you save him he *will* rob and murder this family" [shows Iolaus a young family]. (Iolaus let the guy die - as punishment for a crime the guy never had the chance to commit, as Dahak happily pointed out). But so far as I recall TPTB never put anyone on XWP in the same impossible position. Interesting, because XWP was usually the 'darker' of the two shows. cr ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Thanks to the tip I got here, I checked out Missy Good's comments about the script and it turns out what was posted is indeed the first draft, written in all of ten hours. She says she only changed two words in the entire thing prior to getting it posted. I think that explains a lot ... I'm sure quite a few things would have been changed, refined and improved along the way to production. Still, though, even as a first draft I think it's a fascinating story, and it has some great moments even in its larval stage. > Also > Xena would have had to get her chacky back. Indeed. And now that Lynn has gotten his second cup of coffee... "Ides of March" (Callisto again, of course); "Warrior...Princess" (Diana). I'm not sure Diana counts -- she had it by Xena's will, and unlike Callisto (and, finally, Gabrielle), her use wasn't exactly what I'd call effective. Yes, her throw had an effect, but... How about the air? I'm thinking of "Altared States" and "Been There, Done That", slightly different in each case. I do think Xena was surprised by the chakram's action in "Altared States", though. In fact, on the opening page is a shot of her as her character Zoe (there is a better shot of her at http://www.fox.com/firefly/wallpaper/cockpit_800.jpg). Also, if you click on the "spoilers" section you will find three pages of Joss' pilot script, which happens to be a scene consisting mostly of Zoe dialogue.
