I know, it's not exactly a thought provoking question. But you have to admit that Renee has immortalized the nose wrinkle the same way that Lucy has the raised eyebrow. XWPacolyte Cupid and Psyche... Her mistake was the second in a comedy of errors. My local paper today, 4/20/2002, had-- Fire stunt at bar burns six patrons Associated Press Iowa City, Iowa -- Six people were burned at a college hangout after bartenders set the bartop ablaze in a stunt learned in Acapulco. The bartenders at Et Cetera sent a stream of rum down the bartop and ignited it early Thursday, scattering some customers. The flames raced up the arm of a young woman, setting her hands and face on fire, said Whitney Grabinsky, a University of Iowa student. She said the fire burned another woman's arm and spread to a man's shirt. Another student, Sarah Christeson, said the fire flared when a young woman tried to "breathe fire" by spitting alcohol into the flames. Flames blew into the young woman's face, Christeson said. The young woman was listed in good condition at a hospital Friday. //// A source (I think it was Robert Weisbrot's official book) said that Lucy Lawless did the fire-breathing stunt for real at least once before stunt performers warned her not to, due to the great risk of inhaling fire into her lungs. Since then the stunt has been faked by CGI (computer graphic imaging). Boeotian ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. So I thought that this might give us something to think about. What other attributes of Xena or Gabrielle have that seem to have a religious connotation? Doesn't have to be Christian it can draw on from any cultural reference. This isn't meant to demean any religion but it is interesting how religious themes often are explored or used in contemporary fiction almost without conscious thought. IIRC, she's got approximately 3 frames of screen time in the entire movie. In other words, not really worth the time. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======Next Up: N&K Nields 4/21/02====== ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Doesn't have to be >Christian it can draw on from any cultural reference. I think this is better viewed in the broader context of mythology, of which religion can be seen a subset. Before folks rev up the flamethrowers, please keep in mind that I'm operating from the perspective of Joseph Campbell's theories of how mythology works, particularly as articulated in _The Power Of Myth_ and _The Hero With A Thousand Faces_. Xena and Gabrielle's journeys quite closely follow the "path of the hero", which as Campbell showed is the basis of all great hero myths. To bring it down to its barest bones, the hero's journey consists of: - -- Wandering to "find himself" - -- Death - -- Resurrection Sound familiar? :) >This isn't meant to >demean any religion but it is interesting how religious themes often are >explored or used in contemporary fiction almost without conscious thought. It would take screens upon screens of precious bandwidth to get into Jung's theories of archetypes and how they are imprinted upon the subconsious mind. :) Suffice it to say that the "religious themes" seen in Xena, and in countless other examples of fiction, both contemporary and otherwise definitely fall under this category. When you get right down to it, all of the stories humans concoct are drawn from the same well. It's only the details that differ... and even then, sometimes not that much. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======Next Up: N&K Nields 4/21/02====== ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
