Watched the episodes introducing Xena and they are a kind of mixed bag. Warrior Princess wasn't bad although we never quite know why Xena is so Hell bent on killing Hercules - is it a reputation thing or is she doing Ares bidding (this might be the case since in The Gauntlet dead Darphus is sent by Ares's messanger to pucisg Xena). Of course the problem now with Warrior Princess is that after seeing evil Xena in so many episodes it seems odd that she would need to seduce anyone to do her dirty work. She would just go off and kill him herself. The Gauntlet is the best of the episodes. It is surprisiing brutal not just the beating of Xena but the attack on the village by Darphus and then Hercules's finding of the burnt bodies is pretty shocking. The dark tone which will be a hallmark for Xena is already present. Robert Tabor is very good his Salmonius is very but very touching in his timid attempts at friendship with Xena. Lucy Lawless starts to show her range here - she has nice comic timing as she watches in slck jawed amazment as Salmonius advises her on sprucing up her public image and she brings both vulnerability and dark menance to her gauntlet ordeal. I also love the scene where she finds the baby - she holds the kid as if it's a bomb about to go off in her hands. Two points that troubled me (a) why didn't Xena just kill Darphus when he questioned disobeyed her orders (evil Xem=na would have)and (b) Xena takes pride in the fact never killed women and children just killed all the men - didn't she ever! w! onder how the women and children managed without the men especially in an agrian society. I think our Xena probably did understand the impact of what she did but it's odd no one ever brought it up. The Unchained Heart is OK. Basically it's a monster episode. The newley reformed Xena doesn't have much to do - except have a nice sexy love scene with Hercules -my goodness Xena is an enthusiastic kisser. Lucy hereself doesn't seem to be all that involved in the role - she basically does a bland good (female Hercules. I liked Charles Masuer as Darnel and the actress who played Laferia have a nice light-hearted attraction played with a nice toghness. I didn't find Agremon to be a very convincing villian and a I never believed for a minute that Ares would chose him to be his chosen. I liked the showdown in the forge but I was a little confused about one piece of dialog - Xena tells Gabrielle abd Laferia to leave but Gabrielle, of course, won't go and Laferia says :They won't leave their men behind. I assume she meant Darnel but was she referring to Xena as Gabrielle's man. Great music _ I loved the "Magnificent Seven" music as Xena climbs the fortress's wall. Now for my one pet peeve. Once again we have Xena saying she made the 4 convicts. That her influence turned them to a life a crime. I never accepted Xena's logic here and I always thought Gabrielle could have made a better argument. It is apparent that the four convicts turned to a life of crime with great enthusiasm and in all probability sought Xena out. Yes she trained them but I suspect they were more than willing to be trained by her. When Gabrielle askes Xena if she made her, Xena eventually says that Gabrielle is her own person. It's too bad that Gabrielle could not have at least said something to the effect that the 4 convicts also were responsible for their lives. Next week The Deliverer and Gabrielle's Hope, hopefully. The Di mentioned here is Di Bauden, who is classified as the Dramaturg/Videographer. There is a spoiler regarding what she does, so if you want to pass on this post, feel quite free. I just thought this information was so cool. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Hey Di and other fabulous Xena folk-- Just wanted to pass on the good news we received this weekend. Xena Live! Episode 2 is Jeff recommended! The Jeff Awards are Chicago's version of the Tonys and our production is now eligible for nominations in the awards this fall. We're thrilled and excited and can't wait for you all to see the show! Di's video is fantastic and we were so lucky to have her on the team! There's no one else I'd rather spend an evening with, shooting video of the warrior princess and her trusty sidekick, out in the freezing, freezing cold on a Friday night. Ah, what the neighbors must have thought... Look forward to seeing you all at the show, Heather Schmucker Producer About Face Theatre ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
