A few weeks ago, I was visiting someone. Her TV was left on our local Public Broadcasting channel. The first episode of an educational cartoon was on. Sorry, didn't catch the title. (The theme seems to be teaching kids basic logic skills.) I was talking and not paying attention to the program, but I happened to be looking at the screen, when a little girl lets out a Xena quip. A huge computer with a warm female voice asks these little kids for help. Her explanation of what is going on is apparently hard for the kids to believe. Incredulous, one of the girls sarcastically remarks, "Right. And I'm Xena, Warrior Princess." *************************************************************** A few days later I saw a few minutes of a Dexter's Laboratory cartoon. (The series runs on the Cartoon Network. Dexter is a little kid genius.) He is on the school bus and overhears other boys talking about how they loved last night episode of "Xorna: High Kick Queen." Dexter starts talking about the episode, too. Know one believes he saw it, so in the middle of the bus, he demonstrates Xorna's fighting in his favorite scene. Dexter finishes it up by with one the best imitation Xena battle cries I've heard. (And his mouth wide open, tongue sticking out, wiggling and vibrating.) The scene became both even more comical and touching when I remembered Dexter is voiced by the very talented, attractive actress, Christine Cavanaugh. I just flashed on this image of this lovely woman, standing in this recording booth, and bursting out with this Aiy-Aiy-Aiy-Aiy! (Oh, I've never figured out how to write it properly.) Cavanaugh just did it so well, I just knew, she knew what it was about. She seemed to understand where that sound was coming from :~) ******************************************************** ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I thought the Xena list a little odd but then realized most of SFX readers probably haven't seen the last season. And I thought the order a little strange. But episodes could be beaten out be just one vote. Bitter Suite was #1. But I've never thought such lists work for X:WP. Most of my favorite X:WP episodes, I enjoy equally well. :~) ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! There is a wonderful performance by Tony Todd as Ceropes. He is perfectly cast as the lost mariner - larger than life with a nice sense of melencholoy. A good man who is actually loved by the crew he has imprisioned on his cursed ship. He also I think is the first charcter to comment on Xena's and Gabrielle's love for one another. This episode was I assume must have been orginally slated to air after Ulysiss - smart choice to put The Price in between. The charismatic Ceropes would have made the tepid Ulysiss seem evn more bland. There also great Xena and Gabrielle moments. I loved Xena's daring do as she escapes the island pirates in her head long pursuit of Gabrielle. Then when she catches up to Gabrielle there's a nice reunion where Xena makes sure of Gabrielle's well-being before dealing with Ceropes and his curse. Gabrielle has to deal with three curses. She's on a doomed ship which she handles quit well once Xena arrives. She is seasick but Xena shows her the infamous pinch cure which leads to Gabrielle's ingestion of raw squid (surly ROC deserved somekind of award for chewing on that squid or the propmakers deserve one for fake squid). There was Ulrik her septenarian suitor - Gabrielle is flumoxed by that one. Ulrik, however, survives - Hasim, the fatherly first mate who takes Gabby under his wing, does not - he may be a technical red shirt. Anyway a great episode. One odd thing however. Hasim keeps referring to Ceropes as Rama the legendary Indian hero. In The Way Xena seems to never have heard of hime the monkey guy mentions him. Even I remembered the Ceropes Rama connection - I thought Xena would have at least said "yeah I heard of him who is he." Perhaps the writers didn't see this episode ;-). ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I guess it was way too brilliant and twisted for broadcast TV. Why is this important, you ask? Well, one entire episode centered on Mrs. Oblong trying to get the money to buy her daughter a $350 collector's doll of her absolute favorite television character, "Velva The Warrior". There was even a very clear reference to Xena Night at Meow Mix during the episode. I was just about on the floor throughout. Since I didn't have any advance warning to tape the episode (and I didn't have TiVo yet, sadly) I have been searching in vain ever since for a copy. Now, over a year later I'll finally get a chance to catch it again. :) (Not to mention, I'll get to see all the episodes I missed...) Cartoon Network plans to start airing _The Oblongs_ as part of its Adult Swim programming in July. Yay! I'll be sure to post here when they get the "Velva" episode on the schedule -- it's really hilarious. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. About 25 years ago, a few of my friends (although I hadn't met them at the time) decided to throw a Star Trek fancon. They too, wanted an actor from the show and the cheapest they could get was Mark Lenard. He charged $3,000 and, I believe, air fare was also included. I think my friends thought they would sell the convention out, but alas, they did not. They were determined to pay Mr. Lenard back and he was kind enough to let them pay it back in installments. It took them several years, but they did it. And never invited another actor to one of their fancons, simply because it is just too costly. I think they have other reasons, but I won't speculate here. The only fan-run con that I know of that can successfully invite famous guests/speakers is Dragoncon. I don't know what the arrangements are, because in some instances, some guests such as authors, may use the convention to promote their books. But Dragoncon snares around 20,000 members and that can pay a lot of people, excluding the people who work the con. bd - -----Original Message----- From: owner-chakram-refugees@smoe.org [mailto:owner-chakram-refugees@smoe.org]On Behalf Of cr Sent: Saturday, March 09, 2002 5:26 AM To: Jackie M. Appearing at a con is probably, to them, much the same as a one-off acting job. They _need_ to be paid for it. I'm not talking about Lucy and Renee now, who had 'steady' jobs for six years, but about the other actors who appeared in the series much more infrequently. It isn't the same as professors who have a steady income and, usually, an assured future employment and so don't need to be paid for public appearances.
