[Sarah Anne Packard Subject: [chakram-refugees] Amazon High I was just asked by a new fan (yes they exist!) whether any tapes of Amazon High existed. All I could find on Whoosh were past rumours that the pilot had been completed, however I've never heard of it being actually screened or seen by anyone, so I'd guess it was never completely finished. Of course, clips from it were used extensively in Lifeblood. Does anyone know how far production actually got? Or any other background details? It looks like I'm going to try to get out to Chicago on April 27-28 to see it, probably the evening performance on the 27th. One of my Xenite friends is going to be in town that weekend anyway. If that date works for more people, we should arrange to meet up. There are plenty of good places to eat in the neighborhood either before or after the performance, too. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. The Execution was for me the weakest of the second season episodes. I really like Tim Thomerson's Mealeger character and his realitionship with Gabrielle - the rascally Dutch uncle to the innocent bard. The episode had a good villian - - an upstanding judge who is exposed as a murderous hypocrite. It should be a good episode but it just falls flat. The story for those who don't remember is Xena and Gabrielle are summoned by Meleager. When they get to the town they find out Meleager has just been convicted of murder. Gabby is convinced that Meleager is innocent but Xena knows the judge has a good reputation and there is an eye-witness who saw Meleager with the murder weapon. Gabrielle breaks Meleager out of jail and Xena, in order to save Gabrielle from prison, must hunt him down. Gabrielle, however, takes Meleager's side agains Meleager and even attempts to fight her in order to allow Meleager to escape. Xena eventually captures Meleager who confesses he was drun k at the time of the murder. Gabby is sorely diasppointed in her hero but Xena convinces her to forgive him. We eventually find out Meleager is innocent, Xena saves him form execution and the judge is exposed as a fraud who once sent an innocent man to his death. Not a bad story but I just had real problems with it. First off Gabrielle met Meleager once - yes she liked him and I'm sure she would want to help him but why would she take his side against Xena. She has known Xena now for two years and I assume she trusts her judgement but suddenly she sides with a man who is almost a stranger to her. This episode would have made more sense if the prisoner Gabby was defending was a relative or close friend not just an acquaintance. Perhaps this episode foreshadows some the developments in the third season Gabrielle - her belief that she wiser the Xena in judging people - - but it just seems to come of the blue here. Second the whole issue of the judge's corruption has nothing to do with Meleager. Meleager certainly looked guilty, he himself thought he was guilty, and the judge acted in good faith. It was an extraneous issue that seemed to be more of a ploy to save Meleager than really add to the story. If the judge knew Meleager was innocent and didn't care then his villiany would at least be germane to the story. Third when Xena saves Meleager from being hanged by catching him when he falls threw the trapdoor why was his body carried into the judges chamber by the judge's guards. Didn't they notice Meleager wasn't dead when they put him in the coffin or were they now Xena's allies. I don't mind plot holes but I don't think they should be as wide as the grand canyon. There are some good moments however in this episode. When Xena and Gabby enter the town, Gabby is enthusiastically telling Xena the tale of Melager the Mighty. Xena just seems a trifle annoyed that Gabrielle seems to have another hero besides herself. The final scene has Xena and Gabby encounting an old lady who is gleefully playing with a hanging doll - Gabby shudders and says something about not being like that in her old age. Xena prophetically says that people in their line of work don't get to be that age. Coming up next - Blind Faith. I found out today that there's gonna be this "BardCon" thing in Chicago the weekend of April 13-14, see www.bardcon.org...I probably wouldn't go to that anyway (I like reading fanfic okay, but I don't write any, and I'm not hugely into it...), but they are gonna do a Chicago Xena Night at Stargaze that Sunday night too, which is a tempting prospect..hmmm, dunno. I know I can't go any earlier than that weekend, I'm in a show the first weekend of April, yay. :) But I might wanna/hafta go later than that weekend, so I dunno. I should really start planning this. :) I have friends in Chicago (Xenite friends, even!) who are also planning on seeing the show, so I'm psyched. I don't suppose anyone would be making a trip to Chicago by car who wouldn't mind another passenger? :) I can't really afford a plane trip, so I'd prolly do bus or maybe train (from Michigan). -Sarah, aka the abbagirl- ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
