Mostly for us, being clear means we slightly english-ify our speech (ie we sound more like a RP english accent). And in America that does not always work. I am always pleased to hear Lucy speak in the US in her 2 regular kiwi accents (posh and everyday) on american tv - maybe you should ask for her to be .... is it called closed-captioned? subtitled. I once saw that for an irish english speaker - I was astounded until I realised it was for american tv. For a country with heaps of accents themselves, US media don't seem to have a very high tolerance for accents - maybe lack of practice is having an effect! We are used to american and english accents everyday on NZ TV. I have been watching my new season 1 dvds - and some of the actors could not fake an american accent to save themselves. Some of NZ's best actors sound like real dorks - and like bad actors - in obviously fake accents. I always thought that Lucy was very good - but that Kevin was the best. I asked my travel agent for a quote for First Class from LAX to Honolulu--it came out to $2,300 per person!!! In addition to her usual speaking fee, her "normal" speaking engagement would've been well over $10,000 (I'm not even factoring in hotel costs, meals, etc.). A coach fare would only be about $300-$500/person, which I could handle. For a small club like ours, even *one* First Class air fare would be out of our range (or nearly so, unless I use my own personal $$, which I have been for the past 6 of them ;( ). I don't know if this means Mindy Clarke doesn't want to be available to fans, but IMO this is not exactly "user-friendly". ;( This really is not to bash Mindy Clarke, it was originally to point out what kind of costs Creation has to front in order to put on a con, and they are *considerable*, especially if you have several stars, and major ones. :=( Just MO, - --Jackie ****************************************************** * Proud to have the same birthday as Lucy Lawless! * * * * "I think New Zealand geographically comes from * * ... KTL, I've really enjoyed your con reports. :) Now that I'm caught up, I have a couple things to follow up on... Hawk mentioned: >Xena and Gab make their way though a seedy bar. Xena fights off several >pawing drunks with fists and fire while all the time the oblivious Gab >prattles on about things. "Ever notice we never have trouble getting a >table?" This remains my all-time favorite scene from the show. It had me on the floor the first time I saw it, and to this day it totally cracks me up. If I want to show someone why I love the show so darned much, all I have to do is show them that scene. I don't think there is a better capsule view of Xena's character than that one scene. It's absolutely brilliant. Sojourner noted: >I always thought that Lucy was very good - but that Kevin was the best. I >can't recall him making a boo-boo? I don't recall him messing up his accent either. It used to be a game of mine to "catch the Kiwi" when Xena spoke ... as the seasons wore on it became harder and harder to do, but at the end of season 6 it suddenly became easier again. I guess as Lucy got more and more tired towards the end, it either got harder for her to keep the accent going, or she just cared less. The obvious ones were things like "bean" for "been" and "whirr-yuh" for "warrior", but my favorite has to be "me 'orse" when referring to Argo. Jackie reported: >I just heard from Gina Torres' agent today that she just got a lead >series regular spot for a new pilot called "Firefly" which starts shooting >in April, not to mention a couple of trips to Australia to do the "Matrix >2 & 3". ;=) I _knew_ she'd get a *big break* one day, she's such a good >actress! They note they had Michael Hurst who "wowed everyone with a Sunday night cabaret performance, including Nobody Loves a Fairy When She's Forty and a hilarious version of I Who Have Nothing. The directing master class, which included his director's cut of To Helicon and Back, was funny and enlightening." p. 8, note that producer Robert Hewitt Wolfe had been fired from Andromeda, after Kevin Sorbo complained that the series had become "too clever and too complicated". p. 24-26. 3-page interview with Wolfe on the subject of how brilliant he was and why he should not have been fired. p. 44-52, section on Lord of the Rings, with interviews with Cate Blanchett ("I wanted the ears!"), John Rhys Davies and Orlando Bloom. p. 49 has a still of Gimli bowing before Galadriel, which I believe was not in the first film. The complete gifting scene in Lothlorien was filmed, but in a decision that Peter Jackson has since admitted was ill-advised, it was cut for time. (IMHO if they had to knock five minutes off of what was already a three-hour film they could have trimmed the cave-troll sequence instead, but whatever.) It will be restored in the second DVD version of _Fellowship_, which will be released in November. (The first DVD, to be released in August will have the cut version that is currently in theaters. I'll probably be a total geek and get both, but the one I really want is the later one. :) The snipping of that scene is really the only flaw I saw in _Fellowship_ -- it is *so* important to the subsequent story, so much of what is to come in _The Two Towers_ is going to be really confusing to people who aren't familiar with the books without it. He was absolutely perfect in the part, and for the rest of my days my mind's eye will see Kevin Smith whenever I come across any mention of the God of War. It's such a shame that he lost his life at just the time when his career seemed to be really taking off; and sadder still to think of the young widow and children he left behind. Guess that's just one of those mysteries of life. But what I wanted to comment on--and forgive me if this is little too "me tooish" --was the way Kevin often played up the jealousy aspect of his relationship with Xena/Gabrielle. And in doing so, it felt as if he was indirectly acknowledging something about the relationship between X&G... according it a certain degree of respect even tho he would like to have seen it crumble. In fact, there was a point during the latter part of the fifth season where it seemed to me that Ares was fast becoming the only character upholding the concept of an extraordinary bond between X&G, and this at a time when even Xena and Gabrielle were losing credibility with me in that regard. I hadn't thought about it before, but perhaps the considerable negative fan reaction to Joxer was due in part to the fact that he was always oblivious to the depth of the X&G relationship. Joxer was never written as a very bright fellow but, considering the amount of time he spent in X&G's company, he would have to have been blind as well to remain so totally clueless. Personally, I liked Joxer as a character, mostly because I think Ted's a good actor. But he was written so out-of-the-loop with respect to the X&G bond that over time I developed a considerable impatience with Joxer, especially with his mooning over/stalking Gabrielle. I read a lot of fanfic including many of the virtual season episodes, but you know, I've yet to read a post-FIN "resurrection" story that I felt managed to resurrect Xena without diminishing the sacrifice she made. In fact, it seems that most of the "resurrection" stories simply ignore the fact that she is dead by her own choice--a choice that dramatically underscored Xena's sense of honor and duty. And as much as I would like to see a Xena movie, if a script cannot be concocted so that Xena's resurrection does not cheapen her sacrifice, I'd just as soon she remain a ghost.
