Rob made this episode because he *wanted* to make it - you can see that on the screen - and he directed it himself because he appreciated the importance of the final episode. It wasn't just a way to fill up 2 hours of contracted commercial TV time. (All IMO of course, I can't speak for Rob). If he'd ended the series with a throwaway comedy or a 'bottle' show then - and only then - would I accept that fans had a reason to feel 'insulted'. Can't claim insult just because the producer has a different take on the story than some fans do. So there would be nothing missing there (well, as I said, "almost" -- a few looks were exchanged that had meaning in context, and Lucy's tale of the Bosnian woman needs a visual component to make sense, unless you have the script -- which I believe is available commercially, by the way). But I doubt even half the audio would have come out. There were two reasons. First, the audience was fairly active (even excepting the c**t song...), which masked a fair bit. Second, though there were mikes at the edge of the stage, I don't think any sound reinforcement was in use. While the theater isn't very large, I had trouble hearing a fair amount of the piece -- and accents (even Danielle's put-on Scottish accent in one monologue) weren't the issue. The sound was just too low. In any event, we did suggest to several people at the theater that a recording would be well received, and they seemed to listen to our suggestion. We can hope... We saw nuances of other aspects of his character. Love, hate, greed, passion, control, power-over, even humor and pathos were all there. So that by the final seasons we could see Ares as his more vulnerable self. In Motherhood, for instance, where for love of Xena, he gave up his immortal powers to save Gabrielle and Livia. And his crushing anguish in 6th Season's Coming Home, after he believes he has killed Xena. Lucy Lawless's touching portrayal of Xena at the end, coming to him and caringly checking out his wounds (she had given him quite a knockout in an earlier scene!) was wonderful. As Xena said, he found out his own humanness. And so did we.>> You've nailed the multi-dimensional quality that I loved about Kevin's portrayal. He could be ruthless without appearing to be a mindless bully. Xena was the one weak spot that made him do things "out of character," in the sense that no self-respecting God of War would be caught acting like that. Indeed, most of his existence on XWP revolved around Xena -- tyring to win her one minute and destroy her the next. Contemptuous of Gabrielle, yet forced to respect her importance to Xena. Infuriated with the irony that the one woman who gave him true purpose (beyond his "job"), who made him feel "alive," was also the one who turned her back on him, who didn't believe his love for her until the end. I think I liked most the tension portrayed between Ares and Xena -- two people made for each other, yet neither willing to give up what the other required. I especially liked when Ares tried to use the threat of getting others to fill Xena's boots -- e.g., Cally, various warlords, even Gabrielle. There was always regret on his face and the disdain of having to rely on lesser talent. And those times he had the chance to kill her or wanted so badly to *make* her his, but couldn't do it. My favorite humorous moments were when Xena dissed him or laughed at his foibles. That's probably what I liked most about the seductive ones too. The boyish way this big hunk of a man appeared so bemused at his own powerlessness, even when he raged or spluttered. Kevin gave Ares a heart and ability to laugh at himself that took the sting out of the god's ruthlessness. I always felt he secretly admired Xena's integrity, as that was what kept her out of reach, worth pursuing and a warrior he could trust to giver her all -- even tho it was against him. Even when she tricked him, under the guise of promising to be his, he could only applaud that she'd still somehow managed to get her way ethically. Whenever he sneered at or threatened her, I always felt it was from his rage that he couldn't have her, rather than because she was his enemy. I read a wonderful interview with Kevin in some fan mag, where he laid out his view of Ares and and the god's relationship with Xena/Gabrielle. There was so much depth, so much appreciation for the mythology of war gods, yet understanding of the emotional dynamics that made it all so "real." I could see the subtle ways he had Ares support the soulmates concept through the way he handled his jealousy, attempts to use Gabrielle as a pawn, or appealing to Gabrielle to save Xena. Kevin said he knew who was central to Xena's life, and that's how he played it. I'll always appreciate what he gave to the character, but what I'll appreciate even more is how he contributed to Xena's stature as a warrior and to the love between her and Gabrielle. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. All I was saying was that on seeing the documentary on FIN you could tell that Rob, Lucy, Renee and the crew of Xena were trying to make the best show possible and they all cared deeply about the quality of the work they were doing. >> I just finished reading RT's comments in the latest newsletter. I thought he was very honest about his disappointments with FIN, as well as with what he saw as flaws. As I recall, a major disappointment was with having to make a TV show of what he'd hoped would be more like a film -- cutting out both "mood" and contextual scenes. This in turn led to giving short shrift to some of the cultural traditions of the time. For example, he acknowledges that the whole avenging thing was an initial (and ultimately bad) idea based on something they'd read. They thought Xena should die, and that the vengeance thing would be a way for her to stay dead, but as a fittingly altruistic end for someone who lived by the sword, not as some commment on the "rightness" of vengeance or because Xena had not or could never redeem herself unless she died. He said they also considered having X&G die together, but thought it would lessen Xena's sacrifice if it also resulted in Gabrielle's death, as well as diminish Gabrielle's own potential to continue on as a warrior for good. It seems that in Xenastaff's mind, the two would always be together in some fashion, so he was unprepared for the negative reaction to Gabrielle's going it alone. Like you, I won't argue the impact or "rightness" of the decisions made. However, I was struck by how much RT said he agonized about telling the story he wanted in a way that honored the characters he seemed to care about very much. He, Lucy and Renee said they regretted how some aspects (especially the murky vengeance thing and the focus on Xena's headless body) soured so many fans on what Xenastaff hoped would be a triumphant conclusion. On the other hand, they all agreed that "shock value" wasn't the motivation, so much as making "bold" choices consistent with *their* vision of Xena and her quest. Maybe they worked very hard on some things some of us didn't want to see, but I have to agree that I can't question their desire to give it the best they could. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
