Such a warm, memorable way to underscore Xena's love for taking risks, being inventive, completely unconcerned about her image or what others might think of her idea - -- while Gabrielle must shake her head in wonder, saying to herself "have faith, have faith," sometimes getting bopped by Xena's ideas, but usually delightedly sharing in Xena's success. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Wilson" Subject: [chakram-refugees] Thanks to Kevin <> Spoiler space for all seasons Kevin Smith appeared in, XWP . . . . . . . . . My Thoughts. I'm still in shock over Kevin's death. I don't think it's really hit me yet. I saw him recently on Oxy in "God Fearing Child" and my heart broke. But still, watching him just have fun with his role is just a hard thing to not enjoy. I think it's good to know that, even though it's hard to see him and tell myself what's happened, he still does his job and does it well. I've not yet seen him in anything but XWP, HTLJ and YH, but he's left a legacy of his character that I'll never forget as long as I remember Xena. For as long as I've loved and appreciated Xena, I've also loved and appreciated the prominent role Ares played in her life. At first, when he was introduced in The Reckoning, it became clear that this god would be a thorn in Xena's side... but the kind of thorn that even Xena couldn't (wouldn't?) remove even after the years passed by and the grievances mounted. I always have pictured Xena and Ares locked in a sort of dark, seductive dance, and got to see that vision realized in The Bitter Suite. There is alot of symbolism in that dance - from the choreography even to the dress of bones Xena wore - that undeniably suggested that Ares and Xena would forever be bound, walking a thin line between darkness and light, unable to keep themselves from coming back in the end, no matter what. Gabrielle was a balm in many ways to the influence Ares exerted over Xena. In many ways, she confused and confounded Ares with the ease in which she garnered Xena's undying devotion - while, even though he was in the blood that coursed through Xena's veins, he just couldn't do enough - on the up and up or on the sly - to win her hand. Gabrielle got a lil ego-smirk going every time Xena told Ares there was no chance. I love those smirks. I don't think he ever got over that, or got over the feeling that all the lust of war he could give Xena seemed to be innocuous most times because of "Blondie". He could never figure out what Gabrielle got out of Xena that she enjoyed so much - after all, Xena was a ticking time bomb, filled with anger, tinged with a certain amount of madness. How could she understand love? She'd lived in anger for half of her life. Gabrielle was a farmer's daughter who wanted to see the world. I'm sure he thought his math was done there. He could never figure out what kept Xena so close to Gabrielle. What could the "irritating blonde" offer her that he couldn't, a thousand times over? Hmph! Drove him nuts, it did. But later, when Gabrielle got sharp with a weapon, she appealed to him. He started to see the strength she possessed - something that attracted Xena. Ahh, a light went on in his head. She became headstrong, found peace then tasted sweet war, and had an air about her that suggested she was smart and dangerous if you stepped on her toes or worse - if you messed with her soulmate. That was familiar to him. He began to recognize his devotion to Xena in Gabrielle. He started to understand the intensity of their bonds. In some ways, he tightened his grip on Xena even more, going to great lengths to devise plans or perform stunts to win, or steal, her favor. And in some ways, he let go a little more, realizing that he really did feel love, but that there really was no way Xena would ever let go of the blonde bard who held her interest so keenly. He couldn't help but be abrasive and forceful and conniving - he was the God of War, after all - but he may have learned along the way something nobody else could have ever taught him, something that humbled him in a way, and that was that love was really real and that it could even conquer war. No, he never became a chipper fellow with a song in his heart, but mark my words, love changed the man. He finally understood why Gabrielle and Xena stayed together through all those years and trials. He changed the way he persued her after he got a clue. After that, no more Mr. Puppy Love. After that, no more tricks. Marry me or Gabrielle dies, and that was that (Soul Possession). And it worked. Sorta. Well, not really. But the guy was running out of ideas. So much of what Ares was about gave XWP some of its richest drama (Sacrifice II), some of its most heartfelt moments (God Fearing Child, when he whispers "I love you" then walks away), and some of its cutest comedic scenes (Old Ares Had A Farm - who will ever forget the sleeping scene?). Even when Ares was not on, his essence was rumbling below the surface, a tide, giving Xena her backstory, and showing that she was never far away from the line he beckoned her to cross. Ares truly cared for Xena. That I'm absolutely sure of. He was no sappy Gus - he never could have been. He would always be the scorpion needing a ride across the river, stinging his host only to drown halfway across because he could never change his nature. The character of Ares will stick out in my mind in the years to come. He was part writing, part direction, but given life by Kevin Smith. He came alive. He's made me hate Ares so much I was seeing red, made me feel for him so much I shed a tear now and then, and he made me laugh so many times I've lost count. Once I get the heart to watch Old Ares Had a Farm again, I'm sure I won't be able to wear my frown through the scenes of him flexing his pecs, chasing chickens with his sword, or sandwiched between Xena and Gab in bed, no blanket, unable to get comfortable lest he gather a snarl from Xena or a hand flung to a bad spot by the quintessential heavy-sleeping Gabrielle (while Renee quietly chuckles into the pillow - I never laughed so hard). I know he's missed greatly. I hope when his kids are a little older they'll know what an awesome job their dad did here, all these years. And I know Lucy and Renee and Kevin Sorbo and Michael Hurst appreciate the support we offer in this difficult time in their private lives. I can't do anything for them personally, but as a fan of XWP, grateful that there ever was an XWP, I can truly tip my hat to Kevin and say "damned fine knowin' ya". S. ===== == . . . Yahoo! I love the behind the scenes footage. I'm always impressed with how hard the Xena people work and their dedication to their work. I loved FIN and felt Rob was unjustly maligned by the FIN haters. I hope they watch this tape and see the effort he, Lucy, and Renee put into this effort. Watching Lucy play with fire, Renee slither down a clift face, and both woman wade through cold water to make this episode makes me admire those two even more than I already did.
