Young" Subject: [chakram-refugees] Con 2002 part 1 Well, since Lucy wasn't going to be here, neither was I. Nor were most of my con-going buddies, for the exact same reason. But one of our group had purchased a gold ticket last year and so was committed, and looking at going by herself. So, since my honey and I were heading for Houston at just about the same time anyway, I figured what the heck-we'll make a slight detour and go to the con in LA, visit some family there and see my bud. And so, to quote Melinda Pappas, "Here I yam!" You know, it's very strange to have only one person per bed rather than at least two, plus a cot or two strewn around the room. I honestly never realized before just how big the rooms at the Sheraton are. Another bud decided a couple of weeks ago to join the two of us, but since he's a boy, he had his own room. The trip down had unexpected pleasures--for the first time in MONTHS I got to watch a Xena ep actually playing on TV-one of the motels we stayed in had Oxygen. And let me put myself firmly in the group of folks who HATE the stupid commentary running along the bottom of the screen. But boy, was it fine to see a Xena ep actually being televised again. SMILE. And-it was Chakram! One I think very highly of indeed. I work in tourism, the third biggest industry in Alaska. The attack of September 11th has really hurt the industry. I knew things were bad in Alaska, but I didn't realize how widespread the problem is. The good side of people being afraid to fly/travel is that motel rooms are amazingly cheap-we haven't paid so little for hotel rooms for many years. The bad side of course is the economic fall out for companies and workers. We stayed over in Pasadena until Tuesday and the hotel was like a ghost town. In fact, I walked around a corner and one of the maids jumped-I think she was surprised to see a guest on the floor. And the parking lot had a total of like three cars in it when we left. Another plus was that many of the restaurants were offering special deals-three or four course meals for like $8, obviously trying to lure the small pool of tourists into their establishments. And you could walk around Old Pasadena without being bumped off the sidewalk. Other than us, there were very few people in the hotel and out in the tourist spots. Both Disney and Sea World had commercials airing offering to give customers a year long pass for the price of one day's admission. While in the short run, this is great for those of us who are willing to travel, it's sure hard on people who are trying to make their living in tourism and recreation. Like me. Okay, economic horror story over. Good heavens! A commercial JUST played here in Barstow California offering cruises to Alaska starting at $699. Un furken believable. That is WAY cheap. You all should come on up--grin. This year is also the first con year where the show is no longer in production and there is no buzz on what stories are coming up and who's going to be in them. And so the excitement of being the first kid on your block to get the inside scoop on new eps is missing. And the corresponding excitement of some of the rest of us over, "Fine, great, yeah you're special 'cause you know this, now shut the hell up about it-and make damn sure you use spoiler protocols when talking about it online, DAMMIT!" In those terms it was a far less stressful con for me-no "moral" issues over "ACK!---Do I watch Sharon's slide show of pictures from upcoming eps or not? Whimper." You know, not only is the show no longer in production, but the re-runs are virtually invisible. The vast majority of folks in America just don't see Xena on the little screen anymore at all. It has essentially been "off the air" for the last six months or so. And while I definitely know that we are getting new fans joining us on the lists who have run across it on Oxygen, (because sometimes they write me in reply to my posts) I think the net result of giving the show to Oxygen was damaging to the show's visibility and therefore long term viability. Whomever got the money for selling the show to Oxygen obviously must have gotten a good deal in the short term but selling it to Oxygen hurt the long term financial returns for the franchise. The triple whammy of no Lucy, the impact of the events of September 11th on traveling and the fact that the show is over made for this being the least crowded Pasadena con I've ever been at. I imagine there were also some people who had been totally turned off the show by the series not ending the way they wanted it to, and so not going to the con. But there were still plenty of folks there who didn't like FIN but went to the con anyway, so I don't think that was a significant factor. The only other con I ever went to that was even less well attended than this one was one in San Francisco a few years ago and that one didn't have Lucy either. Actually, the only days I've ever seen the whole house fill in Pasadena was when Lucy was there. Even when Hercules ended a couple of years ago and Kevin Sorbo and Michael had their farewell appearance together on stage, there were seats in the house that weren't filled. But always, when Lucy was scheduled, the place was packed. I went to the last con in Burbank and it was because they had turned away people on the Lucy appearance day that they announced that it would be held in a bigger venue, the one in Pasadena the next year. Perhaps they'll be going back to Burbank or to Santa Monica in the future. So! The con opened with the music video "One True Friend". I don't think I've seen it before. It's a Bette Midler song, I don't know if she wrote it or not though. It was the typical grrlfriends scenes. Then was the world premiere of Coffee Talk. This is a charming little piece but you do have to be a fan to think so, I believe. It reminded me of when I was a kid and loved the Beatles and had a bud who actually joined their fan club. And every Christmas she would get this little record (Note: "Records" were discs that played music, like CD's do today) that would have the boys talking and singing little ditties, wishing you a Merry Christmas, etc. It's of that genre. Just like the Pasadena con video. (Grin). I enjoyed Coffee Talk a lot, but it's like going to your kid's Christmas pageant at school, ya know? You are delighted and all abuzz with it, but when you try to show someone else the tape, they suddenly remember a previous engagement. SPOILERS BELOW FOR THE COFFEE TALK VIDEO It starts off with Renee pretending to be asleep and Lucy coming into the room. Then they look at the Creation calendars and reminisce about the show. Lucy refers to eps by calling them things like, "That one with the Romans" (Boy, that sure limits the choices, eh?) but Renee generally seems to know the names of most of them. It was funny and charming. My favorite moment was when they were looking at Xena as Anthrax in Many Happy Returns and Lucy says, "I can't get over how much I look like my brother Danny." And Renee says, "Oh no, your brother Danny is MUCH better looking". Renee never raises her head from looking down at the picture but Lucy looks up and gives this great Oliver Hardy exasperated stare at the camera. Near the end, Lucy says, "Let's go get the boys" and Renee repeats, "The boys?" and giggles. I had the impression that this concept of Miles being part of kid group was a slightly new idea. I don't think Renee has any nieces or nephews and I don't know if Steve has any siblings or little ones in his family. New mom's are just so cute, the world of being "Mom" is just so new a frontier for them. Renee is a real buxom momma. She kept sticking her fingers in Miles' mouth so he could suck on them. C'mon, we all KNOW he was rooting for something else, Renee. He's either a very fair-haired or else a very bald little tyke. Lovely little child. Julius came in looking like a tiny, blond, hung-over Rob. I suspect he had just woken up. He and Lucy together got out the story that he had just fallen down and scrapped his knee. He was wearing orange shorts and a blue-striped shirt, nothing fancy for the camera and I thought, "Aw, he dresses just like his momma." Lucy is talking away and Julius is standing in front of her with his back to her and she suddenly pulls his diaper out and peers in to check it. He is SO going to be p*ssed off about that when he's a teenager I'm glad this was made-it's homey and low-key and "comfortable". Fun. END OF COFFEE TALK SPOILERS Okay, next was Claire. First, I should say that we did not have the news about Kevin's death at this time. In fact from some of the things Claire said, I don't think she even knew he'd been hurt. Claire was her usual wild woman self. I love to listen to her tell stories. She started off by looking at us, laughing, and saying, "I KNOW all you people!" Then she thanked us very sincerely for still being fans of the now ended show and for our continuing loyalty and support of both the show and the actors who performed in it. You know it suddenly struck me that what Claire said about knowing us was very true. Because all of the gold seats were sold out, and I don't know-about 60% or so of the preferred. And the general admission seats were mostly empty. So the hard core nutballs who are willing to and who can afford to pay top dollar for the front row seats at the cons are still here, while the casual fan base is not. Very interesting The fun part of the less filled house was that, just like at that other poorly attended con in San Francisco, folks just raised their hands and called out questions from their seats. It was a nice informal atmosphere. A lot less screaming went on too. I mean, we even had a clip of Renee come up swinging in her beaded bikini and nobody roared through a fake orgasm. Somebody asked, "Did you ever figure that these few episodes would have such an impact on your career?" And Claire laughed and talked about how amazing it was and how the Xena fans were willing to follow along and support her in other endeavors. And she gave her evil, maniacal laugh and said, "I'm milking this for all it's worth-I'm sucking this dry." Grin. She talked about working with Hudson and said how they hadn't before but that for this con they had put a show together for the evening cabaret. And how great Hudson was to work with. And she said one of the most amazing things about being on Xena was how every woman on there were all like sisters to each other. All these strong women who all got on really well together. And then she said that all of this is due to Lucy. She said something close to, "Without Lucy, none of us would be here. We're all here because of Lucy Lawless. If Vanessa Angel had gotten it, and I don't mean anything bad against Vanessa, but it wouldn't have been the same show, not at all. Not without Lucy." And she continued, "And then they got married and it was so sweet, just so sweet. It was great." And she gave this happy and sappy smile. We all laughed. (You know, when I first typed the above, I typed, "If Vanessa Redgrave had gotten the show..." And then I looked at my roommate and said, "Wait-not Vanessa Redgrave-Vanessa who?" And she laughed so hard she almost hurt herself and then answered, "ANGEL. Vanessa Angel. Sheesh, if Redgrave had gotten it, we'd be talking about Xena Warrior Grandma". (Do I have witty friends, or what? Grin.) Claire went on to say that she and Hudson had gotten their costumes for the performance that night in Victoria's Secrets. "We took them home in a very small bag." Then someone yelled out, "Did you take any souvenirs from the show?" And she answered, "I stole a robe." And then she swaggered across the stage and intoned in a sexy, playful voice, "And a lock of Lucy's hair." Someone asked her if she was going to Dragoncon. She shuddered and said, "No." She said there's something like 30,000 people there. She said, "It's awful, looking out at a sea of men all wearing those little Star Trek shirts. They don't know me and I don't know them. Compared to them, Xena people are normal. You'll see entire families of Klingons-moms, dads, kids. No, I'm not going to Dragoncon anymore." One question was, "In a battle between Xena and Gabrielle against Callisto and Alti, who would win?" She smiled that slow, smirky smile she gets and drawled out, "*I* gave those two girls a really bad time by myself. Callisto gave those two girls a really bad time by herself. (Pause). You do the math." We all laughed. And then Claire said, "But, they'll write it as, 'Alti get's impaled again!'" As I'm typing this, I'm talking to my roommate to confirm what Claire said. And my roommate said that Xena and Gabrielle would win because, "Love is stronger than hate. Remember in Sin Trades when they started out with the word Courage? And that didn't work, that wasn't strong enough to get them into paradise. But love was." And I suddenly had a vision of Amazons Seeking The Word. They're all standing around in groups and suddenly one will say, "Chair?" They all look around expectantly but they still can't leave the area. Another one tries, "Hat?" Again, they look around with high hopes but get no sign. "Snake?" Hopeful pause. My roommate says, "Be sure to mention that you're writing this post at 3 a.m., okay KT?" Another question was, which Alti did she prefer-the Alti of Sin Trades or the Alti of When Fates Collide. Claire said right after filming WFC she liked that one better But that over time, she's decided that the way wild, crazy over the top powerful Alti of the "real world" is the one she'd rather be. She talked about filming the love scenes in Fates with Karl Urban.. "In those love scenes, I had nothing on but band aids, and he's wearing only a sock." (Editorial note: Now we know where all those socks go when they disappear from your washing machine-they're out auditioning.) "And we're filming the scene. And he suddenly starts farting. And he acted like it was something your partner should really enjoy while making love." Then she ended her time by saying something like, "Splitting those two up at the end-well f*ck that!" And then she laughed and said, "It'll be on the internet, Claire said 'f*ck' seven times and talked about farting." And yes indeed, here it is. Grin. Okay-my honey and I are taking off to go get our kicks on Route 66. Tune in tomorrow for the report on Tsianina Joelson and the Bruce and Ted Show. Tsianina Joelson, Varia was up next. They played the Varia video first but I have no idea what song it was. Tsianina came out wearing more clothes this year. She had on an outfit that was buttoned up to her neck. I guess she wised up after last year. She laughed over how "last year they made me flex." She was too nice to say no last year, so apparently she was removing herself from temptation this year. One of our "ancillary friends (other little friends of the seven or so of us who regularly go to the con) was quite adamant that Tsianina was taller last year. If so, Tsianina didn't mention any reason for being shorter this year. Tsianina is...more of a tomboy than the other women on the show but also less crazed. Tsianina stands "tough". She talked last year about how she was picked for the part partially because she was physically adept. And you can see that from how she stands-she stands...tch, like a tomboy. I don't know how else to say it. She's like a happy puppy at times, just a-grinning at us and having a great old time. Laughs a lot on stage and is obviously enjoying being here with us. To my vast delight, she talked about how whenever she sees the Varia video, she just shakes her head over that incredibly stupid bit in Helicon where she walks down the hill with her hands chained in front of her--and never reaches up to remove the blindfold. She said she brought it up at the time but (something like) "I guess this was considered a dramatic image, so they didn't want to lose it." Well, it's a stand-out for sure. Grin. Then we had a short break which I extended so much that I managed to miss most of the season six bloopers, dammit! It's a good thing I've got them on order. Then they had an auction that my buds attended and they said there were great deals to be had there. And then we had a screening of Many Happy Returns. I love that one. I think the comedies of season six are about the best of the whole series. Then we had an Ares Video-the Bad to the Bone one. (Remember, this was before we heard the news about Kevin.) Then we had a Joxer and Autolycus video-I don't remember the song they used but I've seen the video before. The Bruce and Ted show was next. I love Bruce-he's hysterically witty. About two days before the con, I was standing in a California Information Center in Arcata and saw a notice on the bulletin board that the day before we got there the Humboldt Literacy Project had Bruce Campbell (and four other authors) in town doing a book signing. Missed him by that much. Bruce and Ted were their usual taking nothing seriously selves. One of the things they did that I got a laugh over was an imitation of the Kiwi crew members talking as they worked on the set, asking questions and telling the actors what was going to happen. Their accents sounded pretty good to me while still being absolutely incomprehensible. Bruce was talking about his past shows. And said, "That's me, Jack of All Trades, Master of No Ratings." And when we laughed, he followed that up with, "Don't cry for me, Pasadena." There were quite a few Joxer fans in attendance. (Talk about loyal fans-they killed Joxer off YEARS ago.) Ted got a lot of questions about his work and his future plans. He's doing music video stuff mostly. Someone asked him a question which was repeated to a number of the cast members. It was something like, "Is there anything you wish your character had done that you didn't get a chance to play?" And Ted answered that he regretted that Joxer was always so stupid. And then he said how much he hated the hat and how whenever he was playing something seriously, he would always try to slip it off. But then he also said something later about always going for the shtick, playing up the silliness. Someone mentioned what a beautiful voice he has. And he does-last year at the cabaret, he sang and his voice is just gorgeous. It's very beautiful and a very old-fashioned voice, sounds like he's had formal training. In fact that was something I regretted last year-I wish they had matched him up with Darien Tackle. She also has a big, lush voice and I think a duet between the two of them would have been very lovely indeed. Someone from the audience asked him to sing. Then someone else requested that he sing Joxer the Mighty. (*sigh*) So he and Bruce fooled around for a while and then Ted said that folks from the audience should come up and sing it with him. So a bunch of folks got up on stage and ripped off a few choruses of it. (That WAS this year, wasn't it?) Bruce suddenly asked us "How many of you liked the ending." And a good, oh...boy it's hard to estimate.at least..uh..twelve or so of us raised our hands. (It's hard for me to count above ten when I have my shoes on.) There may have been a few more behind me, but it was indeed a small group. "How many of you didn't?" brought up the rest of the hands. More than twelve. I told my honey about this when I got home that night. My honey looked at me and said, "Well, that's the wrong question. Nobody LIKES the ending. Nobody likes it that Xena's dead. (Little snort.) The better question is, "Was it appropriate? Did it fit the story? Did it match the theme of the series? And it did all that. So in those terms it was definitely right to end it that way. But to like it? No." I smiled and said, "My honey, I LOVE you." I'm not sure how it came up, but Bruce said at one point, talking about how fit Renee was, "I had to put my hand on her butt and boy, let me tell you, she is FIT." He held his hand out pantomiming the grip he had on Renee's butt from The Quest. Ted jumped in with, "Well in Fishsticks, there was a scene where I had to slap her butt and boy, yes, she IS definitely fit." And they both talked a bit more about how fit, how solid she is. Ted continued, "So if you happen to pass by her this weekend, just reach on out and clip her one on the butt as she goes by (and he pantomimed a swat). I know she'll appreciate it." Then they had a Draco video, again I have no idea what song it was. And then they screened "Send in the Clones" (Another one I really love) as the autograph line moved along. Then we had the dinner break. And it was at this point that my bud called a Xena friend of hers and heard the news about Kevin. KT - ------------------------ Yahoo! Kevin would be perfect for this--I hope it is one of the big parts. I guess that I shouldn't be surprised. If Lord of the Rings and Dune can be created on film, why not the Riverworld universe? If you can't find anything on the SCIFI site, it's probably because they no idea when it'll be done. The special effects might take a year after everything else is in the can. Isn't that the reason why Lord of the Rings is coming out over three years? This makes sense. About the only place where the Riverworld planet could be recreated (with the help of a lot of computer effects!) is either Australia or New Zealand. And the people making the seres would need great actors who can do mostly American accents and are in really great physical shape. I've read the first novella and the first two novels. The seres is by Phillip Jose Farmer, a wonderfully eccentric writer from Peoria. Everyone who ever up to the 20th century is recreated young and immortal on a giant planet that is mostly a huge river and the banks surrounding it. (This seres is probably the most normal fiction Farmer has written.) So, Farmer has all these famous people as characters trying to solve the secret of this planet. I remember most of the main characters in the series are real people and most are Americans. But there were also important fictional characters and diverse people like Herman Goring and Cyrano DeBergerac. There were about six or seven novels. The first in the series was a novella first written in the 50's. He rewrote it a few times over the years and I read the final 70's version. The name of the novella is "Riverworld." I would love to see a TV version of the novella --Kevin would make a great Tom Mix!-- but I doubt that is the one their doing. I would be scared sh**les someone in the religious right would go nuts. The plot of the original "Riverworld" is cowboy film star Tom Mix traveling down the river with a first century Jewish carpenter named Yeshua. And the two look almost exactly alike. Not giving to much away, Yeshua does really turn out to be who the reader thinks he is -- and the story doesn't end well for Tom or Yeshua. I'd guess SCIFI would either do a movie just set in the Riverworld universe, or an adaption of the first (and most famous) novel of the series, "The Fabulous Riverboat." Sam Clemens builds-- yes--a fabulous riverboat to travel up the river. ************************************************************************* *************************** "Always keep your bowler on in times of stress and watch out for diabolical masterminds." - --EMMA PEEL ************************************************************************* *************************** ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! I couldn't locate Kevin's obituary on the Times website, so I'm transcribing the obit here. KEVIN SMITH, 38, ACTOR IN 'XENA' TV SERIES Beijing, Feb. 21 (AP) Kevin Smith, who played the god of war in the "Xena" television series, died of head injuries last Friday in a hospital here, said a doctor. He was 38. The New Zealand Herald reported that Mr. Smith fell from a great height, possibly six stories. He was in China to film a martial arts film, but the newspaper said that he was not on the set when he fell. Mr. Smith, who was from New Zealand, worked mostly in his native country, but was preparing for his first Hollywood role in the action film, "Man of War," starring Bruce Willis. Filming was to start next month in Hawaii. He was hospitalized after a fall on Feb. 6 while here to shoot the American-Chinese martial arts film "Warriors of Virtue II." Mr. Smith had reportedly wanted to do the Beijing movie so he could work with the stuntman from the film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." He starred in several plays, television shows and movies. His biggest role was Ares in the New Zealand-made "Xena: Warrior Princess." He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Smith, and sons Oscar, Tyrone and Willard. ************************* bd ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. She played a co-detective who flirts with Nash and engages in a game of one-up-manship while trying to solve a crime. She didn't do too bad, but of course her character wasn't as colorful as Velasca was....;) Just FYI, - --Jackie ****************************************************** * Proud to have the same birthday as Lucy Lawless! * * * * "I think New Zealand geographically comes from * * ...
