No offense intended. It's just I've been watching Xena since the beginning and SHE IS very hopeful, very powerful for me as a woman to watch and I have been watching other things, but they don't (except Star Trek) really deal with my hopefulness for life. And CherylA noted that Shiri Appleby has been on the show since the beginning. This is really good. I know, I know that lots of you like other shows, and with other women characters who may be good, and strong in their own way. But my heart is always on the really strong, pushing against the "forces of evil," if you have it, and making out just fine. There may not be for a while a show that captures my imagination and hopefulness this way. It's just the way things fall. [and] Little Problems ...Rose McIver's portrayal of Daphne/Xena (maybe 'cos she played it 'straight'and didn't try to be cute)." Tale of Two Muses and Little Problems, yes yes! Here were two slightly different programs. Tale of Two Muses has relatively little violence and some very sweet stuff between Tara, a boyfriend, and another good friend who was his father. Very touching. And the dancing scenes, such as the one at the end with children was endearing. Including the major actors doing their own dance stuff, everything from Irish riverdance to Texas line dancing! Just a fun show. Little Problems I loved because, as "T" said, here was this little girl who was not expected to act "cute," but was given the support in her role to be who she really was. A strong, smart, powerful girl. Isn't that wonderful? Would that all girls were raised to believe that about themselves! CherylA also exclaimed: "I loved Tsunami." Nothing wrong with that here. I loved a drama set in one setting most of the time, which focused on the characters and dialogue. And, except for the "soapy" bit of dialogue between Xena and Autolycus, it was a serious, well-played out piece. Anything else of mine? Well, I agree with another poster about Lyre, Lyre. I was actually surprised to see that lots of people didn't like it. I guess I like musicals, and the telephone thing at the beginning (I'm referring to the telephone number from By, By Birdie, which the "conversation" song at the beginning was based on), plus the CHOREOGRAPHY (does anyone know who did the choreography?!), were highlights for me. I also like If the Shoe Fits. Do you get that I like musical comedy? Love it. Slap stick, Three Stooges kind of thing. I also came to appreciate, reading posts from others, that there is a British (and British Commonwealth countries) history of satire and gender bending drag-dressing kind of stuff which made this so well done in this and several other episodes, including Hercules, such as Michael Hurst's Widow Twanky. Fun stuff. L ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. L It's called 'pantomime', and though it's old-fashioned these days, it's kinda traditional (or used to be) to show a pantomime on TV at Christmas - often Cinderella (which is of course the archetypal classic panto and what ITSF was based on). And there's *always* a matronly lady who is actually a man in drag. I think they (pantos) probably originated in the old music-hall days. Pantos never took themselves seriously and often worked a few topical references into the plot. And it didn't matter in the slightest that everyone knew the 'matron' was a man in drag, or that the hero would directly address the audience and invite them to boo the villain.... ITSF reflects that sort of thing quite well, I think, in the way that the story changes to suit the point of view of whoever's narrating at the time. I took it as just an excuse to get rid of a rival. What I found way excessive was Velasca's order to kill Ephiny and the Amazons who joined her. And the fact that a majority of Amazons seemed to go along with the idea. Not really very warm friendly people, the Amazons. ;) > And while we at it home come Iolaus doesn't know Xena is dead but Autolycus > does and so do apparently every thug in Greece? And, as has been noted before, Iolaus's reason for dashing off - "I better tell Herc before the news reaches him" makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Herc's a big boy, he can take it. And Gabs has just had to fight off one bunch of Xenajackers, shouldn't Iolaus stick around to help when the next bunch show up? Still, I think the star turn of the ep was Bruce Campbell's 'Xena' impersonation. Very convincing and remarkably funny. > A Necessary Evil is a really good chase film. Actually, I didn't like Velasca at all the first time I saw her. She was just so cold. But she's grown on me - Melinda Clark's portrayal was exactly what the part called for. And she had a couple of good lines - I think I liked best, "Ugh! She's _got_ to go!" (after Callisto stabs her). Callisto had some really nice ones - Velasca: You must have a death wish Callisto: You know, it's funny, I think I do and You don't just _kill_ me and walk away > There are however a couple of questions that do pop up in this episode. > Why doe Callisto and Valesca have blue eyes when they are a god? Did they turn brown from grief?) And finally how does Xena > know Callisto was imprisoned by Hercules - do Xena and Herc write one > another? They must do.... they seem to have a pretty good idea what's going on with each other. Talking of appearances, IMO Callisto's scar (which she got from the burning Tree of Life in 'Surprise') suits her looks. In a strange way, it doesn't detract from her appearance. I'd noticed she'd lost it by Maternal Instincts, I've just re-watched the crucial moments of ANE and found that it disappears when she eats the ambrosia and becomes a god (and acquires the strange eyes). I'd never noticed that before. Anyway, I rate ANE one of the most enjoyable Callisto eps.... Callisto was in classic form in this one. Yay!! Ngila Dickson was, of course, the costume designer for the first 4 1/2 seasons of X:WP. The quality of the costumes in the series took a serious nosedive after she left to do the films, too (witness Athena's tinfoil army -- what the hell WAS that?!?), which further goes to show how good she is. And of course the costumes in LOTR are absolutely wonderful ... though I don't know how many actual awards the film is going to get. Even though it got 13 (!) nominations, the Academy knows it's part 1 of a trilogy that was made all at the same time, so my guess is they'll save the awards for RETURN OF THE KING ... though I'd love to be proven wrong. I would *love* it if the next three Best Picture awards went to Peter Jackson!! Anyway, congrats to Ngila Dickson! Meredith meth@smoe.org Send FREE Valentine eCards with Yahoo! So you have a spectacular woman, a sidekick, low humor and anchronisms, all not too far away from a Xena comedy. There were several Asterix animated films in the 1970s, then an expensive live-action film, Asterix & Obelix vs. Caesar, in 1999. It did not get shown in the U.S. and this one may not either. The humor is apparently too French. The films are based on a long series of comic graphic books by R. Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. They are very popular in Europe and have cult status among some comic book readers in the U.S. A new one just came out-- Asterix and the Actress. The classic Asterix books were written by Goscinny and illustrated by Uderzo, but Goscinny died several years ago and the new books have been written and drawn by Uderzo, with less inspiration than Goscinny brought to the task. The new book has Pompey in Gaul, plotting against Caesar until Asterix and Obelix intervene, just like Xena in certain XWP episodes.
