'Cos the ones I like, I'm not embarrassed to say so, and the ones that embarrass me, I don't like anyway! However, eps I *like* and most (or many) don't... lessee now, I always quite liked Tale of Two Muses, for no real reason that I can think of other than that the cast seemed to be enjoying themselves. Motherhood - love it, absolutely love it. Little Problems - OK, the villain Mr TinFace was weak, but I really liked Rose McIver's portrayal of Daphne/Xena (maybe 'cos she played it 'straight' and didn't try to be cute) Season 5 I liked mostly - including Them Bones, Purity and Back in the Bottle. And I very much liked 'Lifeblood', which I agree is a crappy Xena story but the Amazon High bits are fascinating. Key to the Kingdom was OK for me. And I liked most of If The Shoe Fits - some of the versions of 'Cinderella' were hilarious. And liked Coming Home enormously - specially the Furies and their antics. Oh yeah, and Unchained Heart (notwithstanding the cringingly sappy title ;) Will that do? I'll state right now, M'Lila is absolutely one of my favourite characters, and I think Ebonie Smith did a beautiful job of acting her, too. Anyway, I was just speculating that M'Lila could have fitted into more eps, at least until Sin Trade. (I hope I'm not infringing list rules by speculating on might-have beens? The list has been pretty quiet lately, maybe some discussion might liven it up.) (I should add that some of the ideas that follow were suggestions by Cheryl, I don't wish to steal her credit). We know M'Lila's death in the hut was what drove Xena over the edge, and ignited her undying hatred of Caesar. However, I submit that Xena's Caesarphobia didn't need M'Lila's death as a cause - he conned Xena, betrayed her, captured her, crucified her, broke her legs and tried to kill her - destroyed her power, siezed her money to finance his campaigns, and made her flee to the east as a hunted fugitive - I'd say that would be just about enough to get him on Xena's Things to Do list. Anyhow, suppose M'Lila didn't get killed in the hut, and the two of them fled east and met Borias in The Debt. At this stage Xena wasn't being really evil IMO - no more than standard warlord behaviour - the reason could have been that M'Lila was a moderating influence on her. It wasn't till Sin Trade that Xena got really evil. I always found it a bit 'thin' that Xena would kill all the Amazons just for the heck of it and because she'd made a deal to do Alti's dirty work for her. Or because she was pissed off at Anokin's rejection of her. Evil Xena or not, that's not entirely in character IMO. Well, in my supposition, Alti, jealous of M'Lila's influence and knowing she could never get to Xena with M'Lila around, set things up so an Amazon killed M'Lila. (We know the Amazons could be quite ruthless in defence of their customs). Then that gives Xena an entirely convincing motive for going berserk on the Amazon leaders - somewhat of an over-reaction, maybe, but quite in character for Evil Xena. I can just see it: Xena: I want the one who killed my friend. Now. Cyane: She was defending Amazon territory. Amazon law.... Xena: She dies - or you all die. Cyane: No Amazon alive will surrender her to you. Xena: So be it (Xena's little rampage begins) So there you are. We could have had the gorgeous M'Lila for another four eps, and a (IMO) more convincing reason for Xena's blitz on the Amazons. (It also makes the Amazons not entirely innocent victims, but then many things on this show are not 'black and white'). (If anyone thinks speculations like this are a waste of time, my apologies in advance. ) By the way, I love Destiny, the Debts, Sin Trade - no way am I knocking those episodes as screened. I don't know if I am really embarrassed about it or not, because it isn't a fan favorite. That would have to be The Titans. That was the first episode I saw that started me down that long road to Xenaholism. The first time I saw it, I missed most of the beginning and watching it again after that I still find it to be cute, in a goofy sort of way. I especially like it now because it has Gabrielle as still being naive and innocent, the Bard with a sense of humor, and it shows Xena being totally annoyed with her for getting into trouble yet again. Definitely one of the lighter episodes. I wonder what I would have done or how I would have felt had my first episode been Callisto or even the Gauntlet....some really dark episode. To have become so addicted to a show based on a half seen, goofy episode is beyond me.....something that is really hard to explain to an non-Xenite, to be sure! Just my thoughts.... ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Whenever they ribbed me about my XWP obsession, I'd emphasize the female empowerment and provocative philosophical aspects. Fishsticks was the one ep that seemed the antithesis of that -- with the bawdy, adolescent humor and fantasies of a low brow men's magazine. Except for the campiness, there was very little in it that I'd ever want someone to think represented the essence of XWP's appeal to me. Having said all that, I laughed my head off at it, thoroughly enjoyed watching ROC's (yes, and even Ted's) performance, and am astounded that it is now the only Xena-lite ep I've actually rewatched solely for my enjoyment of it. And since I can put it in the context of the whole, I do appreciate that it represents Xenastaff's creativity, risk taking and willingness to poke fun at itself and allow its cast to showcase their multidimensional talents. Whew! Thanks for the opportunity to confess that. I feel much better now. - -- Ife ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Just a couple minutes after we started watching, the announcer said, "And here's Xena!" It was a black and tan coonhound, with the registered name of something like "Southchase's Warrior Princess". She was a really cool-looking dog ... coonhounds look sort of like dobermans with really long, floppy ears. She looked like she definitely had a Warrior Princess attitude, too. :) Too bad she didn't win or place in her group. She ended up losing out to a *very* cute 13-inch beagle, though, so I can forgive her. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I engage in that sort of thing all the time, particularly on the _Buffy_ list I'm on. For me, it's part of the fun. :) I agree that M'Lila was killed off way too soon. I think that's a case of TPTB not using foresight in their planning. If they had realized how good Ebonie Smith was going to be in the role, maybe they'd have adjusted things so something else would've pushed Xena over the edge (or decided that Caesar's betrayal would be enough), and we could've seen more development of Xena's relationship with M'Lila. So much was hinted at, but not actually shown. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ======================================= (: New England Patriots - Super Bowl XXXVI CHAMPIONS :) ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I'm not embarrassed to admit it, but I've always felt alone in the room when I say that I really, really liked "Tsunami". In fact, it's probably in the top three of the episodes-I've-rewatched-the-most-until-I-know-them-practically-by-heart, along with "One Against An Army" and "The Debt". The final exchange between Xena and Macon is particularly moving. Macon: "Why? I'm a killer. Why'd you come back? What'd you expect?" Xena: "From you-- nothing. From me, nothing less." To me, that's as succinct a statement of Xena's self-image as was ever expressed in the series up to that point. >I >loved Tsunami. I liked the muted subtext between Xena and Gabrielle, the May >- December romance, the Autolycus and the dopy solution of swimming up out the >water with wine skins full of carbon dioxide ( I also love the way Xena or >Lucy rolls her eyes after announcing this absurd plan of escape). I'm with you completely ... but I think what really made me love it was the fact that we get to see Xena really screw up. How many times did that happen in the series (not counting Evil Xena flashbacks)? When she flung the chakram and ended up making the hole bigger and making their situation about as bad as it could be, that was a very rare thing. I'm surprised more people didn't pick up on that. But instead, most of the reviews I saw (on Chakram, anyway) obsessed over the flawed geology and physics of the episode, and completely glossed over all the cool stuff. I mean, come on - -- this is X:WP we're talking about ... check your reality at the door and leave a tip for the attendant when you leave. :) I don't think I'm embarrassed to admit I liked any episode. It's only my opinion, after all (though I must say, those who are embarrassed to admit they liked "Fishshticks" *should* be ;>). Queen Melosa remarked: >To have become so >addicted to a show based on a half seen, goofy episode is beyond >me.....something that is really hard to explain to an non-Xenite, to be sure! Hey, I became addicted after seing the last act of "The Xena Scrolls". Realizing that the show didn't take itself seriously is what got me watching.
