A cute send up of beauty pageants in general. there a re a lot of really nice things in this episode. ROC's fake accent (somewhere between Russian and French) as she poses as the Contessa is funny. Robert Tabor is very good as the Bert Parks wanna be who croons the pageant anthem as the contestants, Xena included, destroy their group dance number. Xena is suitably amused as the undercover contestant. In the end the female impersonator, Miss Artifice, wins as it should be since he is the only one who truly wants to be there. There is a very funny smooch between Artifice and Xena - Xena is comically stunned and Gabrielle is apparently baffled by this turn of events. Good episode. Destiny is of course a turning point in the show Xena. We are introduced to Caesar and we begin to explore Xena's past. As Xena lays badly wounded she relives the turning point in her life when she begins down the path of evil. The Xena we see is a pirate and if not evil she is certainly no paragon of virtue. She is pillaging enemies of Amphipolis and although she seems very happy to steal everything in sight she doesn't seem very blood-thirsty. As LL plays this young Xena - she has the arrogance of youth - she has had tremendous success and she is sitting on top of the world. She is still an innocent in some ways. She meets two people during her latest raids - Milia, an escaped slave and Caesar and she gives them both her trust. Caesar is as arrogant as she is but she doesn't see that his ambition is more important than she is. She gives him her body in the vain belief that he will become her partner. She is brutally betrayed - there is a great scene on the ship after Xena is captured when Caesar says he will always remember their time together and you see Xena's self-disgust and embarrassment at having given herself to him. Xena has now learned about betrayal. Milia on the other had teaches Xena other lessons. She teaches Xena about pressure points, of course. She also shows what true friendship is. When all is apparently lost it is Milia who stays loyal rescues Xena, takes her to a healer, and dies defending her. It is this death that sends Xena over to the dark side. I think it comes to great blow to her young ego to know that she is powerless. She sees for the first time the power of naked ambition and fragility of goodness. I also believe she feels a terrible guilt over Milia's death probably the same feelings she had when Lycius died. Once again she is responsible for the death of good person and something in her snaps and she decides to shut herself off from feelings of love and embrace hatred and violence. As Gabrielle is dragging Xena up the mountain, Xena relives all this. She is once again so overcome by feelings of guilt that she gives up. She dies at the healer's hurt leaving behind a grieving Gabrielle. In the underworld once again hanging on a cross, her symbol of her guilt, she is confronted by Milia who shows her that her life should not be thrown away. She shows Xena that she has mission - to use her knowledge of evil to fight evil, and equally as important , that is someone who loves her so much that she cannot leave her behind. Xena now decides to come back. An interest episode in a number of ways. First we move Xena's time line up from that murky time of legends into an actual historical time period. When this episode first aired I have to say I wasn't happy with the introduction of Caesar. I thought the series was better off being set in no distinct time period but I have to say the continuing story arc of Xena's rivalry with Caesar produced some of the bests episodes - from The Deliver to Ides Of March to When Fates Collide. Second we are now for all intents and purposes introduced to a new character - young Xena or evil Xena - she is a very different person that the Warrior Princess we have known and LL is going to play her with rip roaring abandon. As a side note to this episode. I always felt sorry for Gabrielle in this episode - not just because Xena died. Xena says take me to Mt Nestor and poor wounded Gabrielle loads Xena up, drags her up a mountain in a snow storm and when she finally gets her to the healer Xena says never mind I'd like to die now. I just hope Xena got a good tongue lashing (no double meanings here) after Xena got her ambrosia.
