Women of Sci-Fi in NYC Just bought tickets for this con which will have Gina Torres & Claire Stansfield among some other of my fave's from other shows. The rooms for the hotel where the con will be held are $139 per night. Am looking for a female roommate to share a hotel room and so cut down on expenses for that weekend. Or a place to stay from any of you New York folks? Good acting abounded even Argo was surprising effective as the confused equine. The question is who did better the better job playing their respective nemesis - Lucy as Callisto or Hudson as Xena. Lucy is apparently very natural mimic and she did an outstanding job as Callisto. Callsito of course has a lot of idiosyncratic movements that are easy to mimic but what impressed me was Lucy's walk as Callisto - she got that shoulders back, hips thrust forward walk of Hudson's walk just about right. It also looks really awkward on the Lucy's bigger frame but it would be realistic that our posture is more indicative of our personality than our body type - so that was good piece of acting. Hudson had unfortunately a little less to work with. Xena doesn't have a lot mannerisms that are easily mimic so Hudson basically does serious but she did a nice Xenish shoulder pat for Gabrielle at episode end. One thing that I have always wondered about in this episode was Callisto's and Ares' sexual relationship in IS. I always thought it was out of character for Callisto - she never seemed to use her body to get what she wanted and in TROC she seems to be against sex entirely ( although having sex with Ares is, in my opinion, much more tempting than having sex with Theodorius). Of course one of her motivations could have been that it was one more way to humiliate Xena. For Ares one could almost say that he finally got what he always wanted - Xena is his bed even if it is an imitation of the real thing. There are some interesting story telling devises the thin episode. The multiple dream sequences were, I remember from my first viewing, very confusing and unsettling for the viewer and for Xena. At what point is Xena in a dream and when is she in reality. It did a nice job of unsettling the viewer and Xena. Also the attack on Argo is very unsettling - I don't why but it always upsets me when Callisto-Xena throws the water on Argo - it just seems so mean and poor Argo even looks upset. Also the scene where Theodorus gets his throat slit is also very good - Lucy has Callisto's orgasmic look just right as she revels in murder. Ten Little Warlords is also another good episode. Mainly because of Kevin Smith's portrayal of the mortal Ares. Poor Ares is a drunk, a little cowardly, very frustrated, and very appealing. Kevin Smith sets the pattern here that we see in The Quill Is Mightier and the 6th season of the mortal Ares as being a bit of a screw-up who is just on the verge of being a really nice guy. ROC is also very good as the perpetually ticked-off bard. Joxer isn't really annoying. Hudson is pretty good as Xena but you soon realize that without LL charisma in that part Xena could have become a pretty boring hero. More next week. That seems pretty steep to me. Also I don't know if anyone is interested but Panzar Davis has season 1 to 5 on sale at $99 (no bonus items) and althoughh Panzar Davis is pain to deal with sometimes the price is really good.
