I'm sending this from my work account, but if you could return it to my home one (robjen1@sympatico.ca) when you're done, that would be great. Thanks so much for agreeing to fill this out for me. I'm hoping to get all the responses back by January 15, so if you can't get it back to me before then, could you just let me know? Thanks. If you have a friend who also watches the show, please forward the questionnaire on to them; I'd love to get as many responses as possible. The final question is for you to write about anything that you think I've neglected to ask. You'll notice my questions are somewhat broad, so here you can be more specific. Please make your answers as long as you'd like; the best responses will be the ones I'll be quoting. Otherwise, I'll be using your answers as data (e.g. "Twenty-four of the respondents thought ______ was the best episode"). I'll be keeping your email address on file so that when the book comes out I can let you know. If you're outside of Canada, the US, or the UK (where it should be readily available in all bookstores) I'll give you ordering information if you're interested. Thanks again. I really appreciate all your help. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me about them at robjen1@sympatico.ca. Jen QUESTIONNAIRE **Please note the section on personal information is entirely optional: I just thought it would help a demographical analysis if I got a cross-section of what kinds of people watch the show. Xena meets David and Goliath (no not the boy and his dog - the real Biblical pair). There some interesting things in this episode. First Goliath is not the villain of the piece - he is working for the bad guys but the character is played as tragic figure - a good man so obsessed by vengeance that he goes against his better nature. There is a nice moment between Gabrielle and Xena at the castle where Gabby comforts her friend as Xena contemplates killing Goliath, a friend her saved her life at the expense of his family. Now for the strange stuff. Using real Biblical figures is chancy at best. The young David, Jonathan, and Saul are drawn with respect so you can't really criticize the writer about that. He however changed David's fianci from Micha to Sarah for some unknown reason. Jonathan was killed by the Philistines but not during a battle with Goliath and so on. The changes did nothing much to enhance the story so I don't why they were included. You could have told the David and Goliath story with Xena and Gabrielle without changing much of the biblical story because it's pretty sketchy anyway as to what happened. The muddling up of the history is just puzzling and unnecessary. Girls Just Wanna was a Halloween offering for 1996. It had vampires (bacchae) and wolves, blood drinking, a flooting head and Joxer - pretty scary stuff. It is most famous for the infamous bite that Gabrielle gave Xena to turn her into a bacchae (subtexters were thrilled). It also famous for producing the one of the most requested tracts - the Bacchae Rap which unfortunately has never made it to a CD - I guess Joe didn't write. It was the first episode, for me, where I though the music was outstanding - not just the rap but also the Bacchae fight music and the sensuous music in Bacchus's lair were all outstanding. I have also grown more appreciative of the unusual photography with the distorted focus and quick cutting - when I first saw the episode I found it distracting but I guess I have grown use to it and I do think it adds to the unsettled atmosphere of the piece. Also first time ROC gets to play a demon - she showed promise and went to play very good little evil demons the following seasons. Also our girls encounter with Bacchus has lead to numerous very good fan fiction stories with our girls as various types of vampiri from uber to classic X&G. That's it for now. You can preorder them. I think the VHS tape is around $12. CherylA ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I don't remember seeing this mentioned before. In High Noon Grace Kelly plays a pacifist, a Quaker. She marries the sheriff, Gary Cooper, but insists that he quit his dangerous job. On his last day as sheriff, he has to face four gunmen alone, after the whole town deserts him. She almost runs away, angry that he won't run too. But then she goes back to help him. She picks up a gun from a dead man. Having set aside her pacifism, she has sense enough not to go about it chivalrously and play by the rules. She sneaks up behind a gunman and shoots him in the back, before he sees her and while his gun is empty. The same as Gabrielle, who puts aside her pacifism out of love and runs amuck. The difference is that Gabrielle can fight and takes out several men, not just one.
