I've been > curious how other fans viewed the DC, especially how it might have affected > the overall emotional impact. > > -- Ife As I think I already said on this list, IMO a couple of the secenes made some points a little more explicit (so I won't go over that again). As to the ending, I feel the original ending was much more powerful. I don't dislike the DC ending - if fits OK. (Unlike the end of Ides, for example, where the last 10 seconds of 'touched by an angel' stuff completely sabotages the mood and kills the dramatic impact of the final scene - I *hate* that ending, it makes me want to laugh in derision. Ouch!) So if the DC ending had been the one originally aired, I'd say it was fine. But having seen the original ending, the DC ending seems weak by comparison. I'm sure RT was trying to soften the impact on the fans but I think he was mistaken to try. I don't think anyone who was upset by FIN will be much happier just on account of the 'new' ending - I'm guessing there, of course. Certainly the ending left me stunned - but that was due to (a) Xena being dead and (b) the knowledge that this was the Last Episode Ever. The original ending certainly brought that home, *but* the DC ending wouldn't have made any difference as far as I was concerned - Xena's dead, her spirit is with Gabby on the boat and 'visible' to Gabby but not to anyone else - that's my interpretation, and the ending doesn't change that. It was just awful and makes absolutely no sense at all. The only time Gabrielle could have made her deal with Ares was in the Fate's temple thus making her sacrifice at the pit a sham which would be so out of character to make that plot point laughable. Not only that, in Family Affair Hope chastises Gabrielle for trying to kill her numerous times and says that Dahok saved her ( perhaps Gabrielle was accidently saved also and she legimately had some kind of amnesia about that). Anyway if I even accept any part of Soul Possession I would say that Ares lied through his teeth and Xena went along with it in hopes of getting information about Gabrielle. In this case TPTB should have left well enough alone and we would have all been content never knowing how Gabrielle got out the lava pit. If they wanted so solve a mystery they could have explain we in the heck did our girls get their money. Was it Gabrielle's story telling abilities? Did Xena have a stash of ill-gotten booty left over from the bad old days? Personally I believe that everytime Xena killed a bad guy Gabrielle went through his pockets. It's called "The Poachers and the Stormtroopers", and references his book _Textual Poachers_, which essentially deals with the phenomenon of fan fiction and how it relates to the evolution of popular culture. The speech is fascinating (though I'd like to slap the person who transcribed it, as there are some very egregious spelling and other errors), and there are even a few mentions of X:WP and subtextual fanfic. I thought it would be of interest, so here's where to find it: http://commons.somewhere.com/rre/1998/The.Poachers.and.the.Sto.html There's nothing too earth-shattering revealed, but it's food for thought. Enjoy! ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Not only will the case be sculpted latex to look like the Book of the Dead, but the short film "Within the Woods" that Sam, Rob, and Bruce showed to investors will FINALLY be available. Also in DVD news, the second season of "Buffy" will be coming out in June. The first season set comes out this Tuesday.
