Solstice Carol is very charming episode. The actor who played the cranky king was very good - he was grumpy but not nasty enough that you wanted him dead instead of reformed. Gabrielle is her most charming as she convinces Xena to forego thumping some sense into the king, saves Tobias the donkey from the tannery, convinces Senticles to slide a chimney with a bag full of toys, and actually manages to act like a bard to a room full of children. Xena, on the other hand, is perhaps the most smitten she has ever been with the bard actually getting teary-eyed as Gabby entertains the orphans. LL is very funny as the Solstice ghost who can barely contain her impulse to simply bash the king - she actually looks relived when she finally gets to fight the king's men in the end. That by the way is a wonderful battle using all the toys including a Hercules puppet and a hula hoop. There is also a funny inside joke here - the oldest orphan is named Lionel - you know like the train. The chakram made such a great ornament that I now have one on my tree. This is of course the episode in which Gabby got her wooden lamb from Xena. I though it was always an interesting plot point that Gabrielle gave that lamb to Hope. It must of meant so much to her that she wanted to pass on to her daughter. Later Hope would use that same toy to identify herself to her mother so she could kill Xena's son, causing the rift between Gabrielle and Xena. So the toy that represented so much love eventually is used to almost destroy that love. That was interesting choice by TPTB. I've talked about the Xena Scrolls before. I still love that episode. I loved the way the actors portrayed Janice and Mel. I understand a lot of the choices - Janice and her cigars and Mel's southern accent - were made by the actors themselves. It was a great idea to reverse the personalities - Gab's descendent is the tough one and Xena's is the shy one - undoubtedly the genes got scrambled around as the various descendents met and married one another. I just wish we could have had just one more Janice and Mel episode. Soul Possession would have been a great one for these two. One lasting effect of this episode is that it gave birth to Uber fan fiction and some great Janice & mel stories on the web. Try there. The prop sword from creations is the best but it is not a real sword but it is like to one worn by Xena ( it is heavy and though you can't lop any heads off with it you can give a robber a very nice concussion with it). My first is very much like the orginal - I think is was one of the first licensed words it was made by Procut and has the Xena logo one it. You properly could sharpen it but it is really heavy so might have to work out before you could use it. Good luck, CherylA ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
