For those who celebrate and to those who don't, I wish a joyous Hanukah and a peaceful and safe one for all of us, and for the world. I have enclosed an absolutely gorgeous "eye of god" hand-amulet that my cousin and her husband passed on to me at New Years. I hope you enjoy it. Stragira (pronounced with a soft G) was the place, a former enemy of Amphipolis, that Xena had gotten the dress worn by her in Destiny to try and sedduce Caesar. Was lovely watching it again, and listing the the magical music by Mouth Music, during the sea-faring part. Made me wonder if I didn't make a mistake on Whoosh's choice of best episodes by putting the Norse Trilogy over Destiny. It's still awesome. With stunning photographs and interviews with the cast and crew of the films, learn why New Zealand was the only landscape on earth that could have provided the locations for Tolkien's Middle Earth. This behind the scenes journey is broken into five parts which focus on the interesting parallels between the fictional world and the real life country and people that helped realize it. First let me say it's an great episode - good acting and a compelling story but for me a very dark story. Ares disguises himself as Xena's long lost father Atrius. He cleverly plays upon her childhood love of her father to come between her and Gabrielle and then faking his death at the hands of villagers almost gets Xena to slaughter them and go back to her evil ways. Gabrielle saved the day by literally knocking some sense into Xena before it's too late and Ares's plot is uncovered. Now the acting in the episode is really very good. Lucy brings a nice wistful quality to Xena as she reminisces about the father she adored and who left her so abruptly. She also captures that frightening instability that is hidden by the stoic warrior demeanor that Xena usually wears. When Xena thinks her father is dead she becomes insane with rage and her first instinct is to kill those who have robbed her of her father. It is perhaps a true indication of how much Gabrielle means to her that it is only she that can break through that insanity. This is the first episode where Gabrielle acts as Xena's stabilizing influence. Kevin Smith is also very good. He is very diabolical - using his chosen general simply as a pawn to build an army for Xena. This Ares is extremely cruel. To impersonate Xena's father is bad enough but if you put it in context of what we learn of the true nature of Atrius's death in The Furies it is diabolical. One can conjure up a scenario where Ares causes the death of Atrius by playing on his jealousy so that his daughter will grow up fatherless so Ares can step into that roll symbolically and then literally. Xena must have realize what a devastating role Ares played in her family's history and that is why I never could buy the Ares - Xena romance of the 5th season. Xena maybe many things but she is loyal to her family. I could never imagine her being attracted to Ares after the Ties That Bind and The Furies - it would be just to disloyal to her mother and a father that was also manipulated by the god of war. Anyway a really good episode and major cannon episode. Ares is now a major presence in Xena's life. Gabrielle emerges that the only that can handle Xena. Xena for the first time displays her killer all side of her personality. Xena now also declares Gabrielle her family in one of the most quoted lines if all of the Xenaverse; "There are the families we are born into and the families we make. Our friendship, Gabrielle, binds us closer than blood" (I probably got it wrong but close enough for the Xenaverse).
