Renee looks about twelve (it doesn't help that the young boy she trying to rescue is a little taller than her), Lucy has so much dark pancake on her teeth and eyes actually glow, and Karl Urban is almost unrecognizable as the villain because he looks so boyish. Anyway still a favorite episode. The is actually the first official subtext episode mostly for the famous swimming scene where Gabby is learning to catch fish. We also have a cannon episode here - we learn of Gabrielle's love of nut bread, and the affect of henbane on the mind - both of which will become a staple of fan fiction. Also it would appear Gabby has found that pesky henna rinse that will follow her around in season 2 - her hair is getting redder by the minute (Xena must have a beautician's license also). ROC is very funny as the zonked out Bard. She is astonished to realize Xena is beautiful, she leads a gravelly voiced rock choir, and doesn't even mind being held at knife point. Lucy on the other hand gives a nice wry performance as Xena deals with Gabby's odd behavior managing to rescue both of them from a well without breaking a sweat. David Ackroyd is very good as the father who thinks he must sacrifice his son - he gives a very touching performance as man who can't understand why his god would give him such a terrible task. Karl Urban is satisfyingly hateful as the evil son. Some throw away moments in this episode. When Gabrielle in her drugged haze goes off to find Xena she tells a rock to stay behind and you hear the rock give a disappointed moan. You can also here Gabby telling the tenors to stay away from the sopranos in a voice over. Xena is really busy in this episode - she is either riding, running or flipping to get somewhere in a hurry. This is also the first episode where fish become weapons (this scene is parodied in a Rosanne episode). One question though - I have never understood why Karl Urban character commits suicide. Didn't seem the type to me. CherylA ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
