That was *sooo* X in terms of "no maternal instincts", etc.! ;) And ROC being awkward and "blabby Gabby" was such a great contrast! I really missed that contrast in later seasons, and they both lost their "voices" (both literally and character-wise) IMO, although I admit the trade-off was character growth/change. I probably would've been one of those to still watch the formula eps if they hadn't decided to "go where no man (person) has gone before" in S3 and change things, because one of the things I missed in S3 --> was the stoic X, the one in charge. Just the fact that there was a show about a Warrior Princess would've been enough for me; I've got simple tastes. ;) Not to open an old can of worms ;) , but X got too "lovey-dovey" in S3 --> for me, but that's just MO. ;( - --Jackie ****************************************************** * Proud to have the same birthday as Lucy Lawless! * * * * "I think New Zealand geographically comes from * * ... But they both got so much better in season two as a result of constant practice, I think. " You are very correct bth Lucy and Renee really got better even as the first season progressed. In the first few episodes Lucy looked very uncomfortable carrying her sword that looking back at those episodes you wonder how the audience accepted her as great warrior. Renee on the other hand latched onto the perkiness of her character with both hands and played it to the hilt. It is a testimony to both women's talents that they quickly got beyond the awkward stage. By midseason both were really turning in fine performances. Gabrielle calmed down and Xena started show a hint of the vulnerability and insecurity that I believed always just below the warrior persona. For me the real turning point in the series was The Prodigal for Lucy as an actress. Her role is really small but she shows so much emotion in her short time on screan - - hurt, vulnerability, and affection for Gabrielle that she nearly hugs Gabrielle in relief when she returns to her. For Renee it was The Greater Good - she goes from comic relief to hero in a few seconds. Her farewell to Xena is heartbreaking and all done without dialog and then her explosion of angry grief is really stunning. I just happened it this evening, but >saw Gina Torres dressed a bit different, different hair, more modern >character. Not sure who she plays, but looked interesting. I have been inexorably sucked into this show. What a kickass series like this is doing on ABC I have no clue, but they must know what they've got because they've picked it up for the rest of the season. The show is about Sidney Bristow, a grad student who is also a double agent for the CIA and an outfit called SD-6, which is ostensibly a unit of the CIA but is really an agent of The Enemy. Sidney wants to take SD-6 down for many reasons, not least of which is the agency is responsible for the deaths of her mother and fiance. The show masterfully contrasts her totally off-the-wall cloak-and-dagger life with her incredibly mundane graduate student life, sometimes to downright hilarious effect. The action is very post-Warrior-Princess, in no small part I'll bet because two of the executive producers are Alex Kurtmann and Roberto Orci (who, amazingly enough, have managed to make a decent series despite their woeful track record at RenPics). Another producer, and co-creator of the show is JJ Abrams, who also brought the world _Felicity_ -- go figure. I'm thinking his influence shows through in the downright WB-like use of good music in each episode. Gina Torres has a recurring role as Anna Espinoza, a Cuban-born agent of a post-KGB agency called K Directorate, which is SD-6's nemesis (Espinoza is therefore Sidney's personal nemesis). They're always on the trail of the same thing, one always getting there just a half-step ahead of the other. Kickass action ensues whenever they meet up. It's an immensely entertaining show, with a fascinating web of plotlines that is getting more and more intricate every week. I haven't even mentioned 10% of the stuff that's going on. It's very well-written stuff, too. I would imagine reruns might occur over the holidays - keep an eye out. I can't imagine Xenites not finding it at least a little bit fun. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I can tell you that I sure didn't. I saw previews for the show when it was just getting started and all I could do was laugh at how stupid it all looked. I'd never been able to take H:TLJ seriously anyway, and the fact that this was a spinoff gave it no redeeming features for me whatsoever. I referred to it as "Xena, Pudgy Princess" and ridiculed my sister, who has a PhD and therefore should know better, for watching it. My, how things change. It wasn't until the summer reruns of season 2 that I finally saw the light ... but when I got tapes of season 1 and watched them all in a 4-day period there were still many moments that made me cringe. Thank the gods everything fell into place relatively quickly for the show, or I never would've given it a second chance.
