There must have been a major limitation in sword length, caused by the simple logistics of wearing the thing. On the waist, you'd trip over it, and on the back, you need long arms or you won't get it out of its scabbard in one 'draw'. It follows I guess that people with long legs or long arms should be able to use a longer sword too - a double advantage I would think. Having just watched CALLISTO, A NECESSARY EVIL, and PATH OF VENGEANCE at Meow Mix last night, I have to disagree with this assessment. Gabrielle's looks changed much more than Xena's ever did. Xena's face lost some roundness, but that's about it. Gabrielle, on the other hand, lost the baby-fat look, and became INCREDIBLY buff over the course of the 6 seasons. I'm not even getting to the changes her hair went through ... Basically, ROC went from looking like a 16-year-old farm girl to an Amazon warrior much closer to her actual age. LL, on the other hand, just lost a bit of weight and that was it. Meredith meth@smoe.org Find the one for you at Yahoo! Well I've been having a lot of fun lurking around on the X-files boards. I was over at the Fox X-Files forum and the Idealists Haven, which is the equivalent of the Nutforum--it's the Official Site. And, like the Nutforum, it appears that all the really bitter, angry loonies who have been thrown off all the other lists are kind of gathered there by default. They have a subdivision of boards and I went on each of them and typed Lucy Lawless to search upon. I was impressed to find that all the posts where they called her LL came up too. Hoooooooo! High technology. However, it didn't pull the posts where people call her "Xena" instead of Lucy. It's strange to be on a fan list where you don't know a lot about the show. Nor the specific jargon. There were a number of initials and references that I didn't quite understand. In one post alone we had references to ITA, MSR, and UST. Some of the Philes, (a nickname some of them use for themselves) refer to Lucy as Xena the Evil Mermaid. (I suppose they'll start just listing her as XEM real soon.) There were puzzling references to 1013 all through the posts but someone finally said something like "TPTB in 1013". So--this is maybe their address or office suite number or something like that? It's amazing how like us they are. (Yes, Fek, I KNOW you've been telling me this for years--I just didn't have any impetus to go check it out for myself before and so didn't have the pleasure...) They had a bunch of posters slinging it out over which past season was the WORST one. The consensus seemed to be a toss up between seasons 6 and 8. Though some folks attacked seven but then got attacked back by folks who could not believe that anyone could think season 7 was worse than season 6. But for most people, last year, season 8 seems to be the most dreck laden year. And of course what happened in season 8 was that they lost their star. And yes, I KNOW there's fights over if Mulder or Scully or both are the star. But the premise of X-files, the one-line explanation of the story, essentially, what you pitch when you go out to sell it, must be something like, "Fox Mulder's sister was abducted by aliens when he and she were little and he has spent his life searching for her, studying any and all paranormal events for clues to her fate." All the rest, his joining the FBI, his partnership there with Scully, all of his experiences for the last 8 years, all of that is just details. Details supporting and expanding upon the story the creators set out to tell about the hero. Some people are truly vicious towards Carter and his staff. Just like some of us are towards Tapert and his. Talk of "He betrayed ME!" and "sticking a knife in the heart of his true fans" and "He'll live to regret this!" made me feel right at home. I wonder why Carter wanted to continue without the star character. More stories to tell? But how do you tell them without your star? A lucious money deal from the owners of the series? It's just real interesting to me. I mean, why didn't he just go start another show and tell his new stories there? I think his fan base would have been more willing to follow him to a new show than to deal with the lose of Duchovney. At any rate, Duchovney leaving is of course a HUGE source of frustration and rage for many of the fans. Losing DD (as they call him) has to have a horrific impact on the show. (NOT for those who consider Gillian Anderson the star however. Grin) And there is some ep featuring "Killer Kitties" that appears to be the equivalent of Married with Fishsticks for them. EVERYBODY loathed that one. One poster said, "And don't bring up Killer Kitties to make your point!" and of course, that started them all off. Doggert--gods the things they say about Doggert. He's their little Joxer flamebait. There are the equivalent of Xenaho's and Gabfans on there. There was throaty rhapsodizing over Scully's use of big words. Apparently she used the word "untoward" once and there was a small but intense thread moaning with pleasure over how smart she is. Which led to attacks on Doggert. "HE wouldn't know what THOSE words mean!" "Know what they mean! He couldn't even pronounce them, never mind understand them!" There was some concern expressed over Lucy possibly bringing the cheesines of her show over there. And maybe some of her cheezy fans too. This I found particularly hysterical because about an hour after the new eps, our station has early X-Files eps scheduled. I missed the first half, but watched the rest anyway. Mulder and Scully were investigating murders at a circus. And we had the usual people walking around in scary dark places, suddenly turning and screaming at the unknown menace and then being attacked and left for bloody dead. In the dark so we can't QUITE see what happened. One part showed a guy ALMOST being dragged through a cat door by some unseen vicious creature, smearing blood on the door and screaming. We find out the murderer was one half of a pair of co-joined twins who worked at the circus freak show. The murdering twin was a like two foot high human being, vicious, mindless couldn't talk, who broke off from his twin brother's side at times (leaving a NASTY big seeping ugly hole that we got to see in loving close-up) and roamed the area killing people. Though his brother said he was just looking for another brother. (I missed the point of this, but maybe it was explained in the first half.) It ended with the evil twin forcing the Tatooed Man to swallow him and then take them both off for parts unknown, grinning devilishly at the camera as they drove off. Yeah, gods forbid some of that cheesy Xena sensibility gets over there and taints their show. There were some great lines posted about Lucy before the ep aired. LL was described as desperate, a total unknown, certainly not a household name by any means, an out of work actor who would take any job, and someone who had made a really bad career decision to come over to this piece of trash. One person wrote, "LL brings with her a certain stereotype as a cartoonish brute." (KT Note: Is that kewl or what?) One poster said that LL had done a spot on imitation of Stevie Nicks for SNL. And then lamented a tad wistfully, "I'm pretty sure that won't come into play in season 9." Another poster was answering the question, "Why would ANYONE come work on this show?" and ended with the statement, "I would guess being in New Zealand was no fun for her." There was one poster who said s/he used to be a BIG LL fan. "But then LL married a real jerk...and THEN I realized she couldn't act!" I think that one was my most favorite of all. They figure they made her nude so we would come over and watch. (I figure they made her nude so we would recognize her.) One person decided it was just lack of creativity--since TPTB don't write well nomore, there's no chance of anybody tuning in for stories so why not sink into some T&A. We then had a barrage of posts talking about naked people in the water in former eps. Mostly guys it appears. One person went and watched some Xena eps and said with surprise, "She CAN act..." People are worried the Lucy guest shots will turn into the same (implied disaster) as the Diana Fowley guest shot. But nobody explained that. Of course they assume everyone knows about it. I also found one thread where someone posted a link to Mary D's Xena forum and they then discuss us. This was shortly after it was announced and they were surprised to hear that WE already knew the character's name. Though somone said that we probably got that off the Haven boards. Which was odd reasoning, since THEY apparently didn't know it. Then someone who had gone to Mary D's screamed out, "WAHHHHHH! I can't BELIEVE they didn't share spoilers on that Xena list!" (THAT really made me laugh.) After the ep, most folks ripped it to pieces. The only consistant positive response all across the board was that Lucy was surprizingly good, the only good thing about the ep, an intriquing character whom they'd like to see more of. Topic headers included such lines as, "I want you to leave John and never come back here." I thought John was one of their resident loonies, but it was something Scully said to Doggert in the ep. At least two people are already using it as their sig line. This thread consisted mostly of people screaming back and forth to each other about how Doggert SHOULD leave. And then the next post would say something like, "But it was Big Nose Muldar who HAD left. HA HA HA" Other popular topics were "Do you want the show to fail?" and "Who else thinks the premiere sucked?" Is that nutforum verbiage or what? They called Lucy "Gill Girl", "The scheming Xena", "Xena the water princess", and "a strange naked woman". Below are some comments I pulled from some posts: have to say, love the Lucy Lawless character - kinda like a freaky female Krychek ( the shows only high light) As for Xena, somehow I think she's only there to enthrall the .. ahem... young men in the audience. It still would of have sucked even if the big nose was still there trying to act. I don't think LL is a good candidate for romance with Doggett - she's too tall. Skinner's his best love connection, so far. Lots of common interests - loads of chemistry. "Out of the many disgusting things that were done to this show, i thought that adding Xena, the alian warrior, was one of the worst. nothing against LL, but for me it was just another stab in the back. a cheap trick that had only one purpose: to lure Xena's fans to the show, instead of trying to make the long time x-files fans happy and in a mood to keep watching. betrayal is one of the worst sins in life." Can't you just see Carter and Tapert at dinner somewhere comparing notes to see who has the most vicious "fans" and who gets the most heinous appellations hurled their way? I can. There WERE some positive responses. But it's gotta be a pretty glum thing, to have your favorite show so changed. Ya know, I would LOVE to have someone from another fandom come over here and eavesdrop on us. 'cause I think that "outsiders" can really pick up on the outrageous and overblown. I'm sure none of MY posts would be quoted... KT ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. Yes, when this first was announced, some people were angry over what the X-files fans were saying about Lucy. And I said the same thing you did above--imagine what WE would say if the star of another show had come over to XWP to do a guest shot. But for three hours, we trained our cameras on two delightful, silly, warm, loving and playful friends -- Lucy and Renee. "Coffee Talk" was filmed at Lucy's house on Monday, November 12. I think I mentioned that we originally planned to have them sitting at a kitchen table. However, when Lucy and I were talking about the logistics of various tables in her house, she mentioned a king-sized bed in her guestroom and I pounced on the idea of a "slumber party." They didn't actually don bunny slippers, but Lucy and Renee thought that setting would be perfect and the scenario of two gossipy girls tickled their fancy. They hatched up an opening that I think you'll enjoy Lucy and Renee flipped through our new 2002 Xena calendars looking at photos and remembering things that happened during the making of the episodes. And for a grand finale, they were joined by Masters Julius Tapert, an old hand at being on camera, and Miles Muir, making his film debut! I'm going to spend the next few days editing and getting it ready for fan club kit #5. Meredith, please bear with us if this sounds a bit off from Xena. What I have to say is mostly from several websites I have been gleaning rune information from. Yes, there are runes in the British Isles as well as the varioius Scandinavian countries, in particular Sweden and Norway; also Germany.. They (the runes) may have been brought to the Isles by Scandinavian conquest there. I am reading mostly about 1200 years ago. There are discussions I read about the runes in Scandinavia being much older at 1700; and others that they are way older than that. Most of the rune literature, and artifacts with actual rune carvings (stone carvings) indicate there was magical/religious use of the runes, and also writing use since there are sounds associated with each of the runes. This chimes with the use of the runes alluded to in Rheingold/Ring/Valkyrie trilogy, which I will refer to as the Norse Trilogy. I actually tried to find out of many of the magic or myth uses were similar to the one which we saw Brunhilde use, where she turned herself into fire. So far, not seen anything, but it's all interesting. The sites I have found till now talk more of the runes and their history and use in Sweden and Norway, and give examples. Almost nothing about the British Isles, though several books are mentioned. Apparently, there is a long poem from which the story about Odin hanging from the tree is drawn from. I lost the name of the poem at the moment. As usual, our friends at Xena changed the poem a little. Ah well, the story they produced was worth the change. Here are the sites if you are interested. It was confusing to me, because when I put the link in my message, the NAME was highlighted. When I saw in my Sent folder that the NAME became the URL, I felt kind of foolish. So, for what it's worth, that is how Net 6 is listing links in emails. LS ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
