I had a very nice reply all written out -- and then noticed who made the last comment here. Originally, I blamed the well-known NTSC phase drift problem. But Thelonius is receiving PAL which is much more robust to that sort of thing. I would make a guess at one of two things. Either there is a MacroVision product (or something like it) that can be broadcast, or perhaps a multipath problem is distorting the received chroma phase. I have seen a color banding problem on duplicates of tapes originally made off-air (or off-cable). The display matters -- my projector, usually sensitive to signal quality, seems not to respond to these bars, but my small monoitor produces quite lurid color shifts. Umm...I dunno. (Lynn puts on his sorcerer's cap, mumbling "...chroma...what's Latin for 'phase'??....and for 'distortion'?...") Further setting X-Philes' hearts aflutter was the strong inference that the baby boy Scully (Gillian Anderson) had just delivered was fathered by David Duchovny's UFO chasin' alter ego. But now, on the eve of the show's two-part ninth-season premiere (Part 1 airs Sunday at 9 pm/ET on Fox), reality has begun to set in: Mulder's gone (Duchovny's off making movies), leaving Scully nursing a broken heart — not to mention one downright spooky tot. And if that wasn't bad enough, the single mom also has to contend with the warrior princess herself — Xena's Lucy Lawless! TVGO: Is Lucy Lawless committed to the show beyond the first two episodes? Spotnitz: I hope so. But we don't know for sure yet." since this last is in today's (nov. 9) tvguide on-line, one assumes that they're still hoping to make it worth lucy's while to do more eps--depending of course on when the interview was actually done. at least the door hath not slammed. if you're not an x-phile and aren't already aware of them, it might be amusing to you to read the entire interview just to see the xenaverse/x-files parallels. there are some spoilers, however, if it matters to you. http://www.tvguide.com/newsgossip/insider/ md ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list. I've always assumed that there was going to be degradation on any analog copy (and of course some 'artifacts' on any digital format conversions). Maybe if you put some aluminium foil on the 'rabbit ears' it would work better. As the general quality gets better we become more sensitive. I think there is quite a bit of "I can do that too" going >on between Rob and Joss. While X:WP was in production I wouldn't dispute that Rob took some cues from Joss, but I would be really, really surprised to hear that anything happened the other way around. If anything, maybe Joss looked at "The Bitter Suite" and thought "hey, maybe I could actually pull that off", but I wouldn't expect any more "I can do that too" from Joss than that. If Joss really were taking cues from Rob, Willow and Tara would still be coyly talking about doing spells together, they wouldn't be shacked up in Joyce's former bedroom together, and we sure as hell wouldn't have heard Tara sing gorgeously about being "lost in ecstasy/stretched under my Willow tree" in this week's episode! (Yeah, so I've downloaded the MP3's from the Buffy musical and I've listened to Tara's song about 8554 times today ... sue me. :) ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
