Contact meth@smoe.org with any questions or problems. ========================================================= ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 07 Oct 2001 00:05:10 -0400 From: Mirrordrum Subject: [chakram-refugees] <> Some production questions with spoilers first of all, thanks to ven for making chakram a place we didn't want to leave. and thanks, meredith, for making a place for the chakram refugees to settle. very much appreciated. and now on to SS / / / / / / / / / hello all--i've had occasion to watch several times during the past week and find myself now at leisure to ask some questions i never got around to last year. first, the production questions that have plagued me with regard to the drowning pool scenes. this was clearly another one of the nasty, cold shoots, however i assume that all the snow around the pool was fake. yes? at the same time, it doesn't have the foamy look of most fake snow. does anybody know what they use? do you know what they use for the close-up snow? it looks like ivory flakes used to. and now the ice. i assume that would be some kind of plexiglass stuff since lucy was clearly able to slide on it--it looked very ice-like. i haven't gone back yet to see if there are shots of the plexiglass actually in place over the pool itself. hmmmm. and the drowning. it looks to me as tho ares' hand is cgi'd over xena's face. my first thought last year was "ah, she's actually standing up in water." then i realized the air bubbles were rising toward the "ice." ergo, she was in a prone position. i can't quite envision how you do that w/out half drowning. would it be done on an indoor set in a small tub or pool? is the entire scene done on an indoor set? i can't quite envision it and would be glad of instruction. now, a directing question. in the first scene where we see ares' w/ the xena/gab furies, renee comes in as whatsername--whichever fury that is--and (i'm doing this from memory) she comes into the tent looking like gabrielle and not only is xenafury snuggling up to ares, but gabfury hears xenafury talking about whacking the amazons. there's a moment when she looks confused, then as though she's "caught on." here's my question. since tptb know they're the furies but we don't and they want to mislead us for a bit, of course, lucy and renee have to act like xena and gabrielle might. this works nicely as it serves to fool ares too. however, since they're the furies, they've obviously got the entire thing scripted ahead of time so is gabfury's confused look simply intended to keep scamming the audience or does it serve some purpose i didn't get? it seemed clumsy to me and i was trying to imagine them discussing it and what the direction might be. it's a one-shot, the intent was clear: "look confused and then catch on" but *what's the motivation*? in order to fool ares, it would make more sense for gabfury to just play it smoothly, without the hesitation--ares is crazy anyway. to keep us going and still make it believable i'd expect a much more delicate handling. i'm thinking here of renee's work in --we know she can be far more subtle if directed to be. and indeed, both she and lucy do a nice job of mixing a little fury in with their respective impersonations. naturally, i thought renee did just the least little bit better. i would. i keep thinking i must have missed something. or perhaps it was just one of those bits that doesn't end up looking quite as smooth as one had expected. or maybe beesley got what he was aiming for. dunno. ideas? i must say, i certainly enjoyed viewing it this year more than i did at the beginning of last season. i'm even liking varia, which is delightful. cheerio, md ========================================================= This has been a message to the chakram-refugees list.
