When they say you should get a wristband and go trolling as many clubs as you can to catch at least some of the hundreds of acts that are playing, they ain't kidding! I finally did it right this year and hit several shows this evening and plan on doing the same tomorrow. Tonight a group of friends and I saw: - - Anne McCue (singer-songwriter from Australia, formerly in Aussie group Eden A.K.A., that played Lilith Fair in 1998) at C'est What (very pretty, but too intelligent to ever hit the mainstream, I think, and she missed the whole girl-with-guitar thing by a couple years... but hey, there's always the "Felicity" soundtrack... ;-)) - - The one, the only Kurt Swinghammer, King of the Toronto Guitarists @ Oasis in "Swinghammer 6" band formation. Killer. Check out the lineup: Michael Philip Wojowoda twiddling knobs, his wife Mia Sheard on BG vocals, Maza Meze vocalist Jennifer Moore also on BG vox, Creighton Doaone on drums, Andy Stochansky on keys and percussion, Sarah McElechern on sax and percussion, and Drew Birston on bass. For those of you that don't know, that's pretty much the creme de la creme of the Toronto music scene right there on that one stage. They ran through a short-form live version of Kurt's new concept album 'Vostok 6' (it's about the first woman in space). Very arty. As a friend put it: "Man, I *know* that was good, but I felt like I needed to be on some serious drugs to appreciate it." ;-) - - Went over to Barcode to waste an hour before Flux A.D. (pop band from Hamilton) came on, but there was some band from NYC playing that was *so* damn bad that we popped our heads in, cringed, and left. ;-P - - Thank god we did, because despite my misgivings ("We'll *never* get in - it's *the* industry set of the fest"), we got into a packed, sweaty, swingin' Reverb to catch The New Deal (new local trio getting a *lot* of buzz from press and ordinary joes alike). I have three words of you: Oh. My. God. ;-) AMAZING. The hype is warranted, my friends. They play live heavy-hitting organic *funk*. Their drummer is a *machine* that lays down the grooves so thick you can feel the beat in the air. Literally. We got tired of standing and found a perch against the wall, and the walls were *shaking* something fierce. Unreal. They don't really have "songs" per se, they just jam non-stop (they only played 3 "pieces" in an hour), which totally works live because it showcases their unbelievable playing, but they really don't know when to stop , and apparently the album is a lot slower. Which is totally understandable, because there's simply no way they could translate what they do live onto disc. But I'm sure it's still something - I meant to pick it up tonight but clear forgot, so I must hunt that down. - - From there thought it might be nice to hear something *quiet* (considering we literally couldn't hear each other speak after stepping out of the Reverb ;-)), so we went over to Chicago's to see Royal City, which is the new band fronted by Guelph troubador Aaron Riches. Aaron's solo stuff on disc I like, but the stoner folk the band was droning on stage at Chicago's was *not* that. So we went to... - - The Rivoli, and caught the last bit of The Supers' (featuring some great local players like Kim Stockwood's guitarist Tim Bovaconti and Starling's Maury Lafoy) set. Okay stuff - shiny, hooky pop, but no real 'there' there. But judging by a few rabid fans up front, their fan club was out in full force. ;-) So tired. Dunno if I can do this all over again tomorrow. ;-P What am I talking about? That was the most fun I've had in *ages* and the proper way to do NXNE, baby! Can't *wait* to do it again tomorrow. - - Tab :) ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Jun 2000 10:47:59 -0400 From: rannie Subject: [none] I'd like to ANNOUNCE that both chelle and Lindi will be playing at Rasputin's in Ottawa on July 15th. Dunn" Subject: NXNE notes Sorry I haven't posted much about NXNE as I've been very busy with other things in addition to going to shows, so I've been kind of in read-only mode with regard to e-mail :-) Thursday night I camped out at Ted's for a few hours where I saw Kym Brown and Liliy Frost, both from Vancouver. Kym came highly recommended by Steve Ito, and she is very funky and cool... it's kind of like the stuff that Kristy Thirsk is into now (Kristy used to be the frontwoman for the Rose Chronicle). It's a pop-electronica mix, and considering her entire band could not make it out west, I think she pulled off a very good show. I was also impressed by Lily Frost, who I've never heard before (or even heard OF before). I'd say that her material is somewhat hit-and-miss; some songs are on the VERGE of going somewhere, but they kind of fizzle out without direction. However she did have a few songs that really caught my ear. Last night I was going to see Swinghammer et. al. but I got word at the last minute that one of my friends failed out of school and has to return to the States on Sunday so I didn't end up making it as we all went for dinner. I did manage to see Andrea Koziol at the Oasis last night at midnight. She was pretty good, with a kind jazzy rambling, but her guitarist was amazing! I found out shortly after that he was none other than Kevin Breit, who Roberto has raved about previously. Breit has a weekly (I think) residency at the Oasis, with his band, Sister Euclid, so I'll have to pick a night go see him. Highly recommended. The man is ultra talented. I'm just off to take a quick nap now and then I'm heading down to see Simon Wilcox at C'est What, followed by Alla Kadysh at Oasis again. If I feel up to it I'll head back to C'est What at 12 to catch Mia Sheard. later, kids! Julian [ Julian C. Here is my bit on NXNE After a full day of golf on thursday. I caught Easily Amused at the Free Times at 9:30. They are friends of mine from Winnipeg and they are awesome. They are supposed to play at Rasputin's in Ottawa on Sunday, but I am not sure if they will or not still cause they are having Van troubles. After that I headed to Ted's Wrecking yard to catch the second half of Lily Frost, who I heard of before, i think when I was in Vancouver (she was cool), Then I saw Tamara Williamson, who I originally saw last year doing Planet of the Loops... she does some amazing looping recording stuff... (kinda like Kurt Swinghammer) I capped the night off with the amazing and cute Danny Michel. he put on an awesome set that blew me away. Friday night I meant to go see Kurt Swinghammer. but I ended up falling asleep at 6pm and called it a night. Today, (Saturday) I got a message from kickinthehead.com saying to come down to the CBC building where the NXNE trade show was. I treked downther with both Chelle and Lindi in tow and they both played on the TRADE SHOW stage for a couple of songs each. They both did really well, and lets just say that we met a lot of cool people in the industry. it was pretty fun. After that we went to the outdoor stage at Richmond and John Street to catch Starling play. and they were ROCKING... one of their best performances yet. I might go see them again tonight at Ted's Wrecking yard.. but i am pretty tired now. So I may go take a nap. It was quite a few days of music. Hopefully I got some really good pictures. Cheers for now Rannie **************************************************** Rannie Turingan Toronto, Ontario, Canada ICQ:3857207 AIM:ranzTO http://www.aquezada.com/~rannie/ **************************************************** ------------------------------ End of canadian-music-digest V3 #53 ***********************************
