Here are a few recent record reviews of note for the new Tristan Pisonic album: CD Review by Aubrey McInnis Fast Forward, Calgary AB TRISTAN PSIONIC Mind the Gap Sonic Unyon This highly, highly anticipated album marks the end of a four year gap between releases for Tristan Psionic a band by night and a record label by day. With three minutes left to burn in Mind the Gapıs arresting opening track, "Promise," Tristan Psionic toss you into a good olı Canadian feedback blizzard and promptly shift into pop overdrive during the next track, "Helicopter." Itıs the perfect illustration of why the Hamilton quartet are some of the most captivating string magicians around. Converse-licking appreciation is in order as they create complex, intriguing pop-rockinı juxtapositions between songs, catching you off guard with every passing track. Mind the Gap is an intelligent album (no calculators required) that rocks as much as it frolics through sonic pleasure. 4/5 - --- Minding the gap By KIERAN GRANT -- Toronto Sun MIND THE GAP Tristan Psionic (Sonic Unyon) 3 out of 5 The members of Tristan Psionic have been so busy running their prolific Sonic Unyon label they haven't had a chance to release a record since 1996. Perhaps pent-up for too long, the Hamilton noise-rock crew break their silence on the suitably titled Mind The Gap with Promise, the kind of moody, 11-minute opus that ends in a thundering crescendo of feedback and which bands usually wait until the end of their album to deliver. To the band's credit, the tune is not only spellbinding, but it gets the sonic goo out of the way early.  Tristan Psionic have always seemed like a youthful Sonic Youth with a British psych-pop schooling, and Mind The Gap doesn't change things. But, apart from a couple of pulsating electro-pop interludes, it does offer concise, intense tunes that usually fall under the three-minute mark. Helicopter even sounds a bit like the jaunty sort of rocker Oasis haven't been able to pen in years, right down to its TV-damaged nonsense rhyme, "You know and I know and everybody knows that Magnum's pal T.J., he don't fly so high anymore." (Hey, fellas, I think his name was T.C.)  Chalk that up to the fact that the disc was laid down in a matter of weeks at Toronto's soon-to-be-closed Gas Station studio, but between its brevity and dense guitar skronk, Mind The Gap manages to capture the warped catchiness that made mid-'90s indie-rock great, without the self-indulgence that wore it out too soon. - --- EYE WEEKLY, Toronto ON TRISTAN PSIONIC Mind the Gap Sonic Unyon *** Silent for nearly half a decade, Tristan Psionic were dangerously close to becoming Canadian indie-rock's answer to Guns N' Roses. They actually took only two months to make Mind the Gap -- running the Sonic Unyon ship likely took up the rest -- but they're intent on making up for lost time. The 11-minute opening space-ballad "Promise" makes for a fantastical reintroduction and shows Tristan could easily wrestle the drone-king title from dormant labelmates Sianspheric. From there, it's back down to Earth for an all-you-can-eat buffet of punchy, three-minute meat 'n' potatoes (or, more fittingly, doughnuts 'n' beer) noise-pop angularity. Sure, Tristan are guilty of behaving like a thawed-out beast that hasn't realized times have changed since its mid-'90s freeze date, but hey, I miss Polvo, too.
