Here's a little write-up of the wonderful concert I saw at the Black Sheep Inn on Sunday with Tory Cassis and the Sleanster: My friend Lesley picked me up from work at 3 and we drove to Wakefield in the snow. There were absolutely no problems with me getting in. We thought it would be full when we got there but there were only a couple of people there! So Lesley got us a table and I went to pee. And who should I meet in the tiny little bathroom? Sarah Slean!!! I told her I was so happy she came back to play Wakefield. Sarah was sharing the stage with Tory Cassis (of opening for Moxy at Zaphods fame). Turns out he kicks ass! Not to mention is extremely good looking and has a sexy voice (Sarah Slean even said so!) And he plays the trumpet too! Tory's set was so good that I bought his CD and he signed it "Thanks for making the trek!" He was a very cool guy and very down to earth. Then sweet sweet Sarah Slean...I was gonna request John the 23rd but she ended up playing it first! She is absolutely hilarious and very cultured. She was talking about J.D. Salinger and when I cheered (cuz I really like the song she was about to play) she said "Woohoo? Does he have family in the audience?" :D She said she's no longer obsessed with cellos and then sang a song about being obsessed with some foreign cellist guy at U of Toronto. Hehe...then she introduced weight by saying "You know when you're going out with someone and you're all like 'Wicked! Cool!' and you really like this person and then suddenly it's like 'The way you eat your food really *pisses* me off' and 'That shirt you're wearing is really ugly!' and you start wondering what attracted you to them in the first place? yeah, that's what this song is about." Ha...and she talked about A 440 and some other weird musical stuff. For her encore she did a duet "for all the cheesy people out there" with Tory. They did Irving Berlin's "Always" and it was soooo funny! I was really impressed with Tory's voice though. The band! She had some bald guy on drums (instead of her hot drummer from last time), some darlin' little bass player guy and the ever-amazing, CRAZY, INSANE, but phenomonally *brilliant* Kurt Swinghammer on guitar. No backup singer this time. Tory played horn on some of Sarah's tunes and Sarah played keys on some of Tory's. It was so cool cuz the band was playing, and Sarah was singing like the wonder she is, and Kurt's there off to the side "abusing some guitars for their benefit" and all this snow is swirling everywhere outside the window. It was so cool. The crowd was a lot more interesting than the crowd at a concert I had seen the nite before at the Black Sheep Inn. People had come in from skiing, some people came on ski-doos... I had the best fries I've ever had in my life...mmmmm..... So I bought Blue Parade (I bought Universe the last time I saw her)and Sarah signed it "You braved a blizzard...I love you" I read it and said "Sarah, you play music...I love *you*" and she was all cute and embarrased. As I half-expected, Ian Lefevre of Starling fame was there. He said he drove up w/ Sarah cuz Starling was in TO. We talked about music and how everyone should quit their jobs and write songs :) Man, I adore Ian! The weather was terrible for driving but the 45min trip was tons of fun and I had such a great time! I have a question! I absloutely love "Last Year's War" (as I know many others do too) and for some reason I was sure it was on Blue Parade. When saw it, I realized it wasn't on the disc, not even as a "hidden track". Is it available somewhere else? Probably not eh? One of those gems she only plays live? Hope you enjoyed my concert babble! TO folks! PLease go see Tegan and Sara!!!! LYW was written after Blue Parade... ...I'd hazard a guess and say it'll be on the next recording. Its fabulous!
