Dunn" Subject: show reviews - friday and saturday So. I missed going to see Tammy on Thursday because I was really tired, but I did see Sook-Yin+Lindy on Friday, and Red Autumn Fall on Saturday. Thought I should stick my neck out and say a few things about the shows... Sook-Yin + Lindy, C'est What, Friday ==================================== Sook-Yin Lee opened -- my, she is one bizarre girl. I'd hate to be her therapist. Her insanity had me rolling with laughter, though -- she played a large variety of "instruments", among which were a rubber hose, a noise-maker, a wooden fish, some kiddie keyboards (you know, the little Casios with thirty keys), and a cheesy battery-operated 'radio' from Chinatown. In one of her songs she used the kiddie keyboard to sample herself roaring into its microphone, and then proceeded to use the sample during the song, activated via her foot pedal. She has a nice voice, though -- I wonder if she was trained as a jazz musician, because she sounds really sultry. I would describe her music as "experimental". Lindy played with a band, which I'm told (by Roberto) is unusual. With the band, he totally rocked out. His between-song demeanor is somewhat wooden -- I'm thinking "astrophysicist" -- but when he's playing guitar (a mean guitar!) and singing, his voice is extremely powerful and has a large range. He's also quite a passionate performer, with lots of energy. Nothing like Simian (sp?) from Red Autumn Fall, but I'll get to that later... :-) I would say that with the band, he sounds a little like Radiohead, and at times, like Bowie. Red Autumn Fall, Ted's Wrecking Yard, Saturday ============================================== I had to sit through two interminably terrible opening acts before RAF finally got onstage at about 12:30 (!!!!). The opening acts were called "Last Conservative" and "Memory Bank" -- remember those names, so that if they appear on any bills in the future, be sure to avoid them at any cost. Last Conservative wasn't THAT bad, just bland, with the stereotypical Kurt Cobain knockoff as a lead singer -- long hair, raspy voice, the whole works. He also had the gall to not only plug the band's merchandise no less than four times while on stage, but then COME AROUND to every table and ask if people wanted to sign up on the band's mailing list. Hmm. Worse than a waiter at a dim sum restaurant. "Memory Bank" SUCKED. I can think of no other way to describe the agony of listening to them -- turning on a television set to an unused channel and listening to the static, while screaming into a megaphone, would be more pleasant to listen to. They were pure sonic noise; their songs were loud and without form and their "lyrics" might as well have been written in Polish, since the lead singer simply screamed them into the microphone. So by the time RAF came on stage, I didn't care if they sounded like wailing banshees, I was ready for any respite from the agony of "Memory Bank". I was not disappointed -- in fact, I was FAR from disappointed. I have never heard Red Autumn Fall before, but they were great! Simian, the lead singer, is whacked though -- he was jumping all over the place, off the stage, into the audience, leaning over the monitors, lying on the floor (much to the chagrin of the guy trying to collect empties), and so on -- without missing a beat. The band as a whole totally rocked; I would *buy their CD* (even though they are a "boy" band, heh heh :-) ) . The songs are well-written, with great melodic and harmonic progressions, even if they did screw them up on occasion (probably not noticeable to anyone not musically trained). Anyway, it was a great evening -- it's too bad I had to sit through two brutal bands to get to the good stuff. Reminder to self -- next time @ Ted's, skip the opening acts. Unless it's Michaela Foster Marsh (grrrrr... can't believe I missed her that time opening for Emm) - -- Julian C. Dunn ASIC Validation Group, Matrox Graphics Inc.
