(fwd) [James McGarry Subject: RadioEscapade: host Robynn Iwata! (fwd) Aaaa! Ok sometimes the Universe works in strange an mysterious ways. While driving to an Emm Gryner concert in Forest, Ontario. I picked up a mislabelled tape and through it in the deck. It was 'cub'. cub was my favourite Canadian band until they broke up (a year which also saw the demise of my two other favourites, that dog and Veruca Salt). [And they're all interconnected too... I digress, if anyone is _particularly_ curious e-mail me.] Anyway... Robynn Iwata, sister of the Amazing Randy Iwata of Mint Records, guitarist for cub, artist, is hosting RadioEscapade this weekend... you _must_ listen... really! Really, really! Attached is the press release hot off the virtual desk of one Grant Lawrence (of Smugglers fame, also on Mint Records!). Listen to this one if its the only RadioEscapade you ever listen to! James. P.S. I very fondly remember one cub gig at the Volcano in K-W (now sadly demised). They played "Killed by Death" after I nearly went hoarse screaming. I think Lisa G had just crippled the breathalyzer in the back. I fell down in the middle of the mosh pit, I, my friends, Lisa Marr and Robynn could not stop giggling. It was one of the best nights of my life. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "You told me things last, well, they don't." - cub, they don't ========================================================================== - ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Wed, 29 Sep 1999 11:39:55 -0700 From: RadioSonic Info Account To: gtwelve@aol.com Subject: RadioEscapade: host Robynn Iwata! This Weekend On RadioEscapade Host: Robynn "Cup" Iwata! What the @#$ is RadioEscapade?" RadioEscapade is CBC Radio Two's late night weekend program, dedicated to bringing you the very best in new music. THIS WEEKEND: It's a pop-rocks explosion with new host Robynn "Cup" Iwata! On Saturday October 2 and Sunday October 3, 1999, Robynn Iwata is exploring the expansive world of pop well into the wee hours on CBC Radio Two. On her first of two hosting weekends, Robynn plans showcase the lighter, 'poppier' side of pop music. Get ready for radio tooth decay in the form of sugar pop, art pop, sleepy pop and lollipop! Robynn has brand new music from Quasi, Death Cab For Cutie, Stereo Total!, as well as many of the bands from the Elephant Six Collective: Apples In Stereo, Olivia Tremor Control, Of Montreal, Dressy Bessy and much more. Also, hear the story behind Robynn's new nickname "Cup" (hint: it involves Metallica!). Robynn Iwata is familiar to many fans of independent Canadian pop from her tour of duty as the guitarist in cub for five years, four albums, and countless road trips. Beyond that, she's worked in almost every aspect of the music industry, from radio, writing, and record stores. Robynn's current band is the San Francisco-based I Am Spoonbender, an exploratory new wave avant-pop band to the extreme. The band has just released their debut album in Canada. Robynn is also giving away the new album from Lou Barlow's Folk Implosion! Next weekend, Oct 9/10, Robynn "Cup" Iwata will take us into the darker and more "difficult" forms of pop, from new wave to no wave and all aural points in between. RadioEscapade is produced by Grant Lawrence. *RadioEscapade airs one hour later in Atlantic Canada, and one and a half-hours later in Newfoundland.
