I invite you (except Tab, who has I'm sure already read this ;-) twice maybe) to take a gander at the Facts & Arguments section (back page of the front section) of today's Globe and Mail. John Copping's article details, why, if you're a good musician and getting lots of gigs, you still might want to quit music. It doesn't paint a healthy picture of the state of live music in Toronto. And I'd agree, I can paint the same picture here in Guelph/K-W area, we've lost a lot of venues in the past few years, the Volcano, Mrs. Robinsons, to a large degree the Albion... So heres to a few friends I know juggling the Straight jobs and to the bunch pondering this question. I'm thinking particularly of a guy with a Fun! CD who I and many others still miss on stage. Its a decision I wouldn't wish on any one. I really feel for the folks that have had to leave the biz. I'll simply admonish: Support Your Local Musician. James. P.S. D'oh! Ya know, I just never made the connection. *sigh* ... this is all part of my strange life. Ok, here's the deal in summary. I was at my cousin's wedding inWinnipeg recently and her step-brother knew 2 of the 6 people I know in Vancouver _and_ my roommate's niece happens to know the _only_ person I know in Detroit. The odds are what, one in several million... and now this! This happens to me all the time! But yes! Please come out to the Benefit, _you_ can make a difference; really and all you have to do is pony up a bit of money and sit back listen to tunes. Its easy! They have great food and a yummy raspberry beer! And you'll get to meet lots of fun and happy audience members, like Steve and myself! (Should we wear name tags? ;-) ) James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Some men are so selfish that they read a book or go to a concert for their own sinister pleasure, instead of doing it to improve social conditions , as the good citizen does when drinking cocktails or playing bridge." - Jacques Barzun French-born U.S. Educator ========================================================================== ------------------------------ End of canadian-music-digest V2 #112 ************************************
