Well, I only found out today that Moxy Fruvous has switched labels from Major Warner to indie True North. I was pretty surprised, actually. I'd heard rumblings about this for quite some time, but wasn't sure until I read about it in the paper today. I mean, True North is great and all, but I was under the impression that Warner stood by them fairly well. Granted, they didn't *do* much for them, but they weren't *un*supportive or negative as far as I could tell. Anyways, they know what they're doing, and True North is actually a way better fit for them as far as labels go. It is mostly a *folk* label, though, and as much as people try to pigeonhole Fruvous as "folk music", they're actually more pop, IMHO. Anyhow, those boys are awfully clever - they hired this crazy party dude Jaymz Bee (Toronto musician, party host, and flamboyant man-about-town) to do their launch party for their forthcoming new album, "Thornhill", and in the process got coverage in *3* Toronto papers, a complete and total rarity since the early '90s. ;-) Today there was a great photo and a stupid little article in the Globe and Mail (according to their insipid gossip columnist, the guys are "nearing their 30s" - ROTFL!, "given up their pinko politics" - yeah, *right*, and are basically coming into the mainstream with hot producer Dixon. Whatever!), and the launch party was covered in entertainment weekly NOW Magazine and the Star's Sunday gossip/party column. They couldn't *buy* that kind of publicity before. I'm telling you, that Jaymz Bee is one annoying but awfully crafty guy. ;-) Hopefully this kind of positive coverage will continue *after* the album comes out as well - I know they really would love to be more accepted at home once more, and they seem really happy with and focused on the new album, so who knows? It could be the one that clicks with the public again. Here's hoping... - - Tab :) P.S. Fruvous at home in Toronto at the Street Festival July 11! Be there or be square! ;-P ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of canadian-music-digest V2 #90 ***********************************
