Brilliant cover of the Stones' "Wild Horses", if you didn't hear it the first time 'round. (And I'm *guessing* on the re-airing part here - it'd be cool if it was something newer, but I doubt it.) >May 01 - Oh Susanna! Goodness, this woman gets under your skin. I wasn't into the whole bleak country thing the first time around, even though I'd seen her live a fair bit and been impressed. But following the 2 SOS tour appearances I saw, I've been so taken with her new album. As Sarah Slean would say, "It makes me weepy." :-) [See my post about the free weekend Suzie T.O. show!] >Jun 11 - NxNE: You'll all be there with me, right?! With bells on. ;-) - - Tab, looking for some caffeine (damn exams!) :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 16:34:14 PDT From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: OAC: Upcoming Toronto shows - Natalie, BNL, Stardust Picnic, more... Hey, folks... Upcoming Toronto gigs and ticket info of interest: 1. Natalie Merchant opens the Molson Amphitheatre season May 22nd. Tickets on sale Monday at 10 a.m., and apparently they're only 20 bucks! Cheap! No lawns for this one, and bring a sweater if you're going. ;-) [If any of the Toronto Fumblers need to get in touch with me about this, call me!] 2. Barenaked Ladies open their North American summer tour at the Amphitheatre July 25th. Tickets on sale May 1. 3. May 24th, Mix 99.9 holds their annual Mixfest at the Beaches. Melanie Doane is the first artist announced - several more to come. If you're going to this one, go early and bring a blanket and something to eat - last year, 200,000 people were in attendance at the Beaches! 4. Dar Williams at the Horseshoe is a DO-NOT-MISS. Tickets are $12.50 at the 'Shoe or Ticketmaster. And Steve Ito will be very happy to hear this - local quirk-pop songstress Arlene Bishop is set to open. Should be a very, very nice evening indeed. :) 5. Harbourfront is set for a summer of excellent folk Sundays, all free, 2 p.m. every Sunday. This Sunday, the melancholy folk stylings of local alt-country singer-songwriter O Susanna! :) Everyone who can make it should go! I myself am trying to tear myself away from the books to make it down for this one, but I have an exam on Monday, so I doubt it. Suzie's been touring with equally wonderful songstresses Sarah Slean and Sarah Harmer, so I'm sure she'll have some interesting tales to tell amidst all the acoustic harmony. :) In June, there's local folksingers Cate Freisen and Katherine Wheatley, both worth checking out. 6. Also at Harbourfront this summer is singer-pianist Vonda Shephard of Ally McBeal fame. I don't think she's ever even been to Toronto, so that should be a packed one. Tickets will run you $20 in advance, $25 day of show. 7. And finally, add yet another touring summer festival to the roster - - Blue Rodeo is taking their Stardust Picnic concept across Canada this year, and strangely enough, the weakest lineup is in Toronto! :( True, we get Ivanna Santilli, who is great, even though she doesn't fit in stylistically on the bill at all (?!), but other stops include 54-40, Neko Case, Ron Sexsmith, and the aforementioned wonders Sarah Slean, Sarah Harmer, and O Susanna. Sarah Slean is playing only at the Guleph stop (I hate you, James. ;-P), which has one of the better bills of the lot. Actually, if anyone was listening to "Live in Toronto" (Bleh. Who does anymore, with that moron George hosting?!) earlier this week, they would have heard the stupidly erroneous information given out by said host about the Stardust Picnic. He basically said it was 54-40s show, and it was not being held at Fort York this year, but rather in Guelph. Uh, wrong. If he had bothered to even check, he might have been able to give you the *correct* information, which is as above (the Toronto shows *are* at Fort York, and the Guelph date is separate, at the Conservation Park there). Idiot. Totally looking forward to a summer of great shows, Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Apr 1999 16:44:32 PDT From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: Toronto Lilith lineup (maybe) We'll know for sure after the press conference on Tuesday, but based on what I've read and heard, I'm guessing that this is how the Toronto Lilith Fair lineup is going to go: Main Stage: - - Sarah (duh!) - - Sheryl Crow (she's doing almost all the dates, hasn't been here yet, *and* cancelled a solo Massey hall April date - I'd say she was a sure bet) - - Indigo Girls (at least that's what they say on their website) - - Dixie Chicks (the Toronto Star reported yesterday that they will in fact be coming back to Toronto for LF) -- I'm really not into this at all - I mean, I think they're cute and fun and actually talented (i.e. they can play), but I think of it like their slot could have been filled by someone better - - That leaves one unknown mainstager, at least for one of the two dates Second Stage: - - Cree Summer, the actress-turned-singer, is reported by Macleans magazine to be doing all the Canadian Lilith Fair dates. The rest to be determined, obviously. Aside from the Dixie Chicks, I'm totally pleased with the mainstage. I can't stand Cree Summer, though, so hopefully there'll be better second and Village Stage acts in the lineup. Also, I know everyone is so focused on the lineups that are going to be annoucing on Tuesday, but keep in mind that things keep evolving and changing throughout the whole summer - in fact, last year, the Toronto bill was changed several times. First Neneh Cherry and Lisa Gerrard dropped out and were replaced, then even replacement mainstager Billie Myers was replaced the day of the second show by Liz Phair, who just stayed on when Billie couldn't make it. Oi, the confusion! - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of canadian-music-digest V2 #74 ***********************************
