Listen up, Cicero fans (and Emm Gryner fans!)! - --------------------------------- CICERO record release party for "Out of Nowhere" his debut March 17 @ Ted's Wrecking Yard Come one come all. - --------------------------------- Cicero (aka Dylan White), a very talented singer-songwriter emerging on the Toronto scene, is currently the sole act on Emm Gryner's Dead Daisy Records label. Steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Mar 1999 15:37:50 PST From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: OAC: Junos Hey, folks... Okay, so Sarah wasn't there, and a lot of the 'big names', yadda yadda, but the Junos turned out marginally better than I'd expected, despite the spectacle of Celine's constant costume changes. ;-) Highlights and other stuff: - - BNL playing on the beach in Australia, complete with Hawaiian shirts and fruity drinks! :) Like Bullard said, thanks for rubbing it in, guys. I really didn't think they'd win as many as they did, but good for them! Although they didn't really need to be quite so snarky about it (Steve: "I'm only 28 and I'm having a comeback!"). ;-P I thought it was so cool that they thanked Kim Hughes on national TV, though (for those of you who don't know who she is, Kim is a great music journalist here in Toronto that's always championed BNL and lots of other Canadian artists. But recently she was axed from hosting an interview show on local rock station Edge 102. Well, they can eat her dust, baby!). - - Melanie Doane winning Best New Artist! All right! (Looks like my prediction of Bruce Guthro was way off - I thought they'd go with Bruce's safe East Coast blandness.) Mel had a good weekend overall -she also won her category at the industry-only Canadian Radio Music Awards on Saturday. There's a nice big photo of Melanie in the front section of the National Post today, as well as a tiny one in the Ottawa Citizen. Also, check out gorgeous shots of Melanie in the Photos section of the excellent Junos website - www.juno-awards.ca - - Mike Bullard's delivery was as flat and uninspired as usual. Bring back Jann Arden, dammit! ;-) Then again, the "script" was pretty lame - seeing as it was co-written by CBC's Jonathon "Jonovision" Torres, I'm not surprised. ;-P - - Speaking of the CBC, I was just glad that the show didn't air somewhere else (because of the technicians' strike). It would have been just plain wrong to have it on some other network. - - None of the performances were especially spectacular, but the Philosopher Kings were pretty good, and the Jesse Cook/Natalie McMaster duet was spirited. BUT - did anyone else notice that Gerald was wearing a *wedding ring*?? I've never seen him wearing one before, so I was just curious... - - Rufus Wainwright winning Best Alternative Album (?! Whatever *that* means) - well, *duh*. ;-) Great attitude, though - that '70's- style outfit and closing, "And next year I hope I'm on TV!" LOL! Go, Rufus! Go, Rufus! - - Rufus and Melanie made a great-looking presenter team, too. - - Jim Cuddy and David Usher presenting together only confirmed the fact that Jimmy can still hold his own. Get a fashion sense, David! (Then again, with looks like those, who needs to dress well? ;-P) - - Speaking of fashion, Best Dressed awards go to Jim, Melanie, the Wilkinsons (are they a great-looking family, or what?) and the Johnny Favorite Orchestra (all 100 of those guys looked sharp ). The Sloan guys needed some co-ordination lessons, The Moffats were in the running for Worst Hair, and what was with that Corey Hart/Kevin Parent matched-set thing? "Two Similitudes", perhaps? ;-) - - I kept wondering *where* I'd heard that slightly annoying, breathy voice that was announcing the nominees before. Scanning the credits, I realized it was Erica Ehm! Remember her from MuchMusic? How the once-mighty have fallen... ;-) C'est tout, Tab :) ================================================================== "That's the beauty of music: it has a specific meaning for each person... Musicians make music, and journalists and writers see the importance of this music in the general context of culture." - Iara Lee, Filmmaker and Renaissance Woman ================================================================== ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Mar 1999 16:37:50 PST From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: That Rufus! I'm sure all you CMW (more to come on that - who slept this weekend? ;P)-goers have already browsed this week's NOW and Eye mags, but I just had to share some delightful quotes from articles in both on Rufus Wainwright (he's playing in town this week): - - "But although Wainwright is only up for one Juno (Best Alternative Album), he seems more miffed that the Backstreet Boys were nominated for a Grammy and he wasn't. 'It kind of pissed me off,' he says from Manhattan. 'But if the Grammys are going in the direction of that horrible group of 35-year-olds that call themselves boys, then sayonara.'" LOL!! - - On the Junos: "If I win I'll come out in some Palestinian outfit with a Native American and shout, 'Vive le Quebec libre!' and walk away." ROTFL! For the record, he didn't. ;-) - - "Before Wainwright dashes off, I ask him what era he would most like to have lived in [TabNote: What is *with* these stupid rock-critic questions?!]. 'I'd want to be Caligula, for the power and the glory, baby. I always get a crack out of those emperors. They'd have people's heads cut off for burping,' he laughs. 'Can you imagine? And the Juno for the best beheading goes to...'" Hence, the Eye article was titled "Emperor Wainwright", natch. ;-) From NOW: - - "In fact, the emtional highs and lows brought about by his live show are as much part of his appeal and his un-self-concious hyena laugh. 'It can work really brilliantly if you get it right,' Wainwright cracks. 'And you can keep the audience somewhere between laughing and crying. I know that it's right when audience members come to me after the show and I can't tell whether they're laughing or crying. They're just kind of wide-eyed and stunned. 'I'm trying to rattle the senses. You get the crying thing, then the laughing thing, and you just don't know where the hell you are. If I can stir that mixed bag of emotions, then - ha ha - you're mine.'" Wow - I totally have to interview this guy. With quotes like those, who the hell needs to *write* anything?! :-) [P.S. Those of you going to see Rufus at the magical Trinity Centre tomorrow, have fun and let the rest of us too-damn-busy saps know how it was.] - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 08 Mar 1999 20:49:05 PST From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: Re: OAC: Junos - Kim Hughes Steve wrote: >Tab, I enjoy reading your updates, but I can't say I agree with your >opinion of Kim Hughes.
