Someone tell me that Celine won't win everything!? I mean, this is looking to be a pretty sad Juno awards imho. Sarah, BNL, The Hip, Alanis, Shania, Emm and others won't even be there, and they're Canadians we're actually proud of! So sad, so sad...okay, putting aside the fact that we know Celine will win big, because that's what she does, but does anyone else have predictions? From: http://www.canoe.ca/JamMusicJunos1999/mar5_junos.html - --- Make way for Celine Dion touted for armful of Junos By MIKE ROSS -- Edmonton Sun TORONTO -- So the Celine Dion Show ... er, the Juno Awards are a go on CBC after all. Bully for them, or should we say "Bullard," since the occasionally funny Mike Bullard will be hosting Sunday night. Expect at least one gag about the CBC strike and one about how slim Celine Dion is. Actually, if Bullard gets a worthy opponent to bounce off, he can be a riot. If not, well .... We'll see. The Junos need a little spice. All awards shows can be boring, sentimental, ego-inflating, musically questionable festivals of self-congratulation. It's the nature of the beast. Add a helping of classic Canadian mildness and you have the Junos. It's as safe as an episode of The Beachcombers - but a lot longer. As for the nominees this year, there are two schools of thought. One is that it's just so gosh-darned swell that Canadian artists are getting such international attention, Celine, Shania, Alanis, Sarah. They're so big only first names are needed. The other opinion was illustrated by the recent editorial in Toronto's preeminent "alternative" weekly (now that Now is so tediously mainstream), Eye. After criticizing the divas for not sounding Canadian enough, the rant ends with, "Now we're served American cheese and told it's still Canadian syrup." The debate continues. Meanwhile, even more fun than inciting argument is predicting who will win: BEST SINGLE: One Week (Barenaked Ladies); My Heart Will Go On (Celine Dion); Apparitions (Matthew Good Band); Adia (Sarah McLachlan) and Hurts to Love You (Philosopher Kings). Winner: Celine Dion. Eerily familiar, no? BEST ALBUM: Happy? (Jann Arden); Let's Talk About Love (Celine Dion); The Book of Secrets (Loreena McKennitt); Grand Parleur Petit Fraiseur (Kevin Parent) and Phantom Power (Tragically Hip). WINNER: Dion. BEST FEMALE VOCALIST: Let's just save some space, shall we? Celine Dion. BEST MALE VOCALIST: Celine Dion. Sorry, getting carried away. The nominees are Jim Cuddy, Corey Hart, Colin James, Kevin Parent and David Usher (of Moist). WINNER: Give it to Colin. Swing is big, baby. BEST GROUP: Barenaked Ladies, Matthew Good Band, the Philosopher Kings, the Rankins and the Tragically Hip. WINNER: The Hip may have released a great new album, but so did BNL. Hmmm, which one made it big in the U.S. and which one didn't? Ladies all the way. BEST NEW SOLO ARTIST: Melanie Doane, Emm Gryner, Bruce Guthro, Hayden and Tamia. Winner: Close, but Doane's probably the strongest all-around singer, instrumentalist and songwriter. She looks great, too. BEST NEW GROUP: Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra, Love Inc., the Moffatts, New Meanies and the Wilkinsons. Tough to call. Swing is big, but so is dance, teeny pop, modern rock and country. WINNER: New Meanies is my favourite. BEST POP ALBUM: Dion. BEST-SELLING ALBUM: Dion. BEST-SELLING FRANCOPHONE ALBUM (what is the point of these "best-selling" categories?): Dion. INTERNATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: Dion. And finally, BEST ROCK ALBUM, determined by public vote: Since When (54-40); Underdogs (Matthew Good Band); Navy Blues (Sloan); Phantom Power (Tragically Hip) and Silent Radar (The Watchmen). WINNER: Hmmm, who fills Canadian hockey arenas and who doesn't? It's tragic, just tragic. - --- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Mar 1999 11:45:18 -0500 From: Steve I Subject: The Special Guests Hiya folks, been meaning to post about a cool band I saw recently called THE SPECIAL GUESTS (yes, that's really their name). They're an indie rock band hailing from Victoria, BC. Their music is like a blend of 50's/60's pop rock with an injection of 90's crunchy guitars. The result is loud, punchy, and fun. Their live show is even better than their CD, exuberant and energetic and... did I say they were fun? Anyway I wanted to get this out today because they're playing tonight in Toronto at CMW... 9pm at the Reverb. Buy their CD, it's only 5 bucks! But I want my Junos!!!!!" *mournful weeping* oh boohoo.....boohoohoo....*sniffs* *grabs kleenex* *chokes back tears and begins to talk* I'm happily reading the Arts section of the Ottawa Citizen today, when I see this headline on page E14: "Canadian's popularity in U.S. Americanizes the Junos" AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And who's picture's right there? Scream Celine. I tried to find the article on line at www.ottawacitizen.com but I couldn't....It mentioned how Canadians who are hot in the US will beat other (sometimes way more worthy) musicians at the Junos who are more locally successful...Here's a quote of the last paragraph: "If not, maybe it's time to merge the Grammys and the Junos. They're beginning to look an awful lot alike when it comes to celebrating Canadians and Canadian music." What are we going to do??????!!!!!!?????? My absolute beyond favourite awards (in second place, the ECMAs and in third, the WCMAs) show is looking really bad right now!!! The Junos used to be the best place to showcase the rockin Canadian talent the Grammys always overlooked! What's happening here???? And Sarah's not attenting and neither is Emm :( How can they do this :( :( :( I wait all year for this show! I thought last year's Junos were great! Even David Foster's loooong speech was beautiful! And this year we get Mike Bullard and Celine Dion? What happened in 1998???? Oh the humanity! Where's my awesome rockin Canadian music going to? *sob* And then all this crap about CBC threatening not to air it? Why don't they see the light??? Canadian music is wonderful!!! WE HAVE SO MUCH TALENT in this country!!! Yes...I'm pretty pissed....and yes....some of this post may make no sense at all....but this is an issue that must be addressed! fuming (notice the lack of a "b" and a "l"), luv Shawna =) - ------------------------------------------------------------ Here's my fumblecode...it makes me feel important: - ---BEGIN FUMBLECODE BLOCK--- Version: 3.1b [TC1.0b] FuN>FuMU exsl a+ Ifte lonca rd ps+ bs t-- C- w--- p2/*p LF+ N++ cd28 pr++ g+ S--- x Fa m+/?m b+/b/b- fc- E- rl-- d! s! - ----END FUMBLECODE BLOCK---- - ------------------------------------------------------------ "What makes a person so poisonous righteous That they'd think less of anyone who just disagreed?" ~~MOXY FRUVOUS~~ *Are you a Tammy RayBould fan?
