Carr). Veda is sheer brilliance. It took me Its a really good CD too! I think it well represented Emily Carr. It was a very odd and posthumous collaboration. Veda took bits from EC's journals, etc. to construct songs. It really captured the spirit of Carr and was very evocative of the paintings; if you close your eyes you can see the swirls of colour, ok, well at least _I_ could ;-) I'd been wanting to see Veda Hille for, literally years, she used to play around Guelph a _lot_, I missed countless Albion shows and the one time I _didn't_ go to Hillside, she was there. She's been recommended by a very diverse bunch of people, both those who share some of my musical tastes and some who just plain don't. About my only real exposure was that one track on Nettwerk's Lit from Within benefit CD. A wonderful little gem of a track. Her stuff is quirky, strange and some "songs" I feel are really anti-songs; or a deconstructionalist type of song that attempts to tear down and build up the meaning of song. I don't hold out much open for major markets embracing this, but, its good, very solid music. I will go out on a limb and say she's likely the sort of person who isn't going to sell a lot of albums, ever, _BUT_ will be a large influence on the next generation of musicians. A musician's Musician if you will. > said that he didn't want to seem conceited but that it was the first time > that one of their opening acts was able to stand up to them, meaning that > Susan totally captured the crowd, which by the end of her set was cheering I also thought he meant this musically. She didn't seem to know exactly where they were taking that little medley, but managed to keep pace and react like she was one of the Fruvs. Musically she was standing up to their blistering pace and giving them a run for her money. Sarah got a really good crowd response, they were cheering just as loud, but Susan, _became_ a Fruv... ..if y'all know what I mean. :-) It was a lot of fun to watch. I've got to listen to her CDs again and pick up that live one Steve recommended! If they tour together again, just go see them!! :-) James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Mar 1999 11:21:36 -0500 From: Steve I Subject: psst... Oh Susanna CD release in Toronto Hey folks, as some of you may know, Oh Susanna has a CD Release party tonight in Toronto, and that she will be having some special guests. It is rumoured that Sarah Slean will be playing piano on a few of Suzie's songs. Suzie U. has some other pretty high-profile musician friends too so I expect that there could be quite an entertaining show even after Suzie's showcase ends. This could be one of them secret gems of a show, folks, one of those ones that those "in the know" will be talking about for months afterward... Anyway it's at Ted's Wrecking Yard, it starts at 9pm, and cover is free (but donations are welcome)!
