I've gotta say, as much as I dislike the woman, she's really done an amazing thing here. It'll be great exposure for all these acts, and it's a great, diverse group of artists at various levels of their careers. In fact, I'd go to most of these shows just to catch the openers, such as in Winnipeg (my hometown of old!) and Toronto. I can't believe I'd ever say this (especially since that if I hear that godawful "Unsent" one more time on the radio, I will seriously do some damage ;)), but kudos to Alanis and her crew for working this out. - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Feb 1999 21:08:15 PST From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: Tara, Emm, Dayna, more in March Elm Street! Hey, all... The issue of Elm Street many of us have been waiting for is finally out! The March cover story is a feature on female Canadian singer-songwriters. The gorgeous cover shot is of the newly-blond Tara MacLean - many fans will be surprised, I'm sure -- she's come so far from the shy, long-haired girl on the cover of "Silence". The main profile is also on her - her story is so heart-breaking, but really inspiring as well. She's come through so much to do what she's always wanted to do - which is to express herself through song. The other two profiles are of the equally wonderful Emm Gryner and Dayna Manning. The Emm story is fairly routine (do we really need to read about her sending the fruit baskets to prospective managers *again*?? ;-)), and so is the one on Dayna, but hers look smore at her character and personality, which is interesting. The photos throughout are just fabulous, and if that weren't enough, there's an excellent sidebar on the rest of the emerging bunch of Canuck gals - they list practically everyone you can think of, including Chantal Kreviazuk, Damhnait Doyle, Kim Stockwood, Sarah Slean (!), Kinnie Starr, Veda Hille, and more. It's a great package in all, and I think it'll be great exposure for all the artists involved. Elm Street has emerged as one of the classiest magazines in terms of sharp writing, photography, and layout, but I think since it's skewed towards an older demographic, it can be kinda dry and boring at times, with the predictable "women's issues' stories and recipes and stuff. So I'm very glad to see them devoting their resources to this type of a story. I mean, it's no secret that we have a crazy amount of unbelievably talented female singer-songwriters here in Canada - it's about time someone took a hype-free, intelligent look at that. - - Tab :) (P.S. If no one's posted about this yet on ITW, can someone forward this to that list? Thanks.) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of canadian-music-digest V2 #31 ***********************************
