(IMHO, those Winnipeggers have got it all...) <--snip--> Alanis Canadian dates announced By ANDREW FLYNN Canadian Press TORONTO -- Alanis Morissette will undertake an arena tour across her native land this spring, bringing with her a wealth of Canadian bands to open the shows. Morissette, who gave a news conference Wednesday at the soon-to-open Air Canada Centre, said she's looking forward to being back in Canada after the first leg of her American tour. "I'm so happy to be connecting with Canadian artists first and foremost and then connecting with the country itself," said Morissette. "There are so many amazing artists, songwriters, expressers in this country and over the last few years there's been an openness to Canadian artists internationally in a pretty big way." The Ottawa-born musician released her second alt-rock album last year, which has not fared as well with the music-buying public as her first blockbuster major release Jagged Little Pill in 1995. Though Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie yielded the No. 1 hit Thank U and has sold more than a million copies, it hasn't received nearly the critical acclaim nor the staggering 16 million in sales that greeted Jagged Little Pill. Morissette, who sat smiling placidly behind a microphone while flashbulbs popped, laughed when she was asked if the heavy promotion behind the tour was intended to help boost her album's fortunes. "I have no expectations for the stuff I create," Morissette said. "I've had records out in this country since I was a teenager -- I had a record out when I was 10. I feel that as soon as I've expressed who I am ... it's a snapshot of who I am at that moment. It's a success with my own definition of it, so as far as how it's received externally, I can't really control that. "But I can control the space from which I create." The tour will start May 2 in Vancouver, moving on to Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Saint John and Halifax. Joining her along the way will be a who's who of Canadian rock: Sloan, Veda Hille, Kinnie Starr, Limblifter, Wide Mouth Mason, Copyright, Crash Test Dummies, Emm Gryner, BTK, Esthero, the Miller Stain Limit, Nancy Dumais, Thrush Hermit and Joydrop. "There were a lot of bands that just due to the fact that I've been travelling so much over the last few years, I hadn't been exposed to," Morissette said. "So this was a way for me to be able to learn a lot more about what's happening up here musically as well." Morissette, who is nominated for three Grammy awards, said she is looking forward to appearing on the American industry awards show Feb. 24 in Los Angeles. "I can't wait to perform. I love to sing so any time I have an opportunity to do that I'm excited," she said. But winning an award is something she doesn't worry about. "It's fun to be there." Officials from her record company, Warner Music, said $1 from every ticket sold on the tour will be donated to a local charity and the proceeds from T-shirt sales will be evenly divided among all of the charities. What will Morissette do on her days off in Canada, which she says are rare during a tour? "I would just walk to the nearest park or lake -- somewhere earthy and natural because we spend a lot of time in venues or on buses and there's a huge element of cabin fever that results from that." Warner officials also said a "rare" Morissette song would be available starting Wednesday for fans to download from one of her Web sites (www.alanismorissette.com or www.maverickrc.com/promotion) until Feb. 26.
