"In our first issue of Indie Nation in December of '97 Zoe Gemelli introduced us to the music of local singer/song-writer Sarah Slean. Since that time her popularity continues to grow and will no doubt be aided by the fact that she recently signed a record contract with Warner Music. Look for Sarah on the soon to be released Women And Songs 2 CD for which her song "I Know" was rerecorded. Visit her website at www.sarahslean.com for more information." - --- - --- Nettwerk Independen for the sake of music (pg. 4) By Zoe Gemelli "It has has become increasingly clear in the last 10 years or so that if you can't join a major label (get signed) then you can start your own. All it takes is a bit of money and a lot of passion of the product. This was the case back in 1985 when Terry McBride, manager of the Vancouver band Moev, along with the support of others including Mark Jowett, who played in the band decided to launch Nettwerk Records. Currently Nettwerk is most widely recognized for its involvement with such artists as Skinny Puppy, one of Canada's foremost industrial groups, and that female singer, what's her name? Oh yeah, Sarah McLachlan. The company began, however, simply as a group of music lovers who's passion, in time, helped to build an internationally successful company with the idea that music takes time to make, and growth requires patience. Nettwerk was started because there was a need for distribution of Canadian industrial style music to growing markets outside of Canada. McBride and his colleagues were Canadian pioneers at the time. They were import record junkies who knew that there were others just like themselves overseas who would dig the same sounds that they had grown to love. So they set out to fill record stores abroad beginning with Moev's pop-industrial grooves and picking up such acts as the Grapes of Wrath and Skinny Puppy along the way. In 1987, while Moev was touring on the East coast, they met a young lady named Sarah McLachlan. They waited for her to finish school and helped her to move out west to begin working on her first album, Touch. Their patience obviously paid off, McLachlan has since gone on to become one of Canada's most successful artists both at home and abroad. Over the years, Nettwerk has signed and dropped a number of bands, all in the name of newer new music. They still have a very Indie feel to them despite the fact that some of their artists have gained international success. While they are still dedicated to a variety of forms of industrial music, such as the softer ambient sounds of Delerium, they have also branched out and signed pop oriented groups like The Wild Strawberries, who had a few Indie releases before being signed by Nettwerk. Although they are a Canadian label they haven't limited themselves to only signing acts from these parts. They recently, in fact, put out France's Autour De Lucie, another group who have received critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. This doesn't surprise the average Nettwerk fan who appreciates the fact that they are still willing to support new groups with a fresh modern sound. As a fan of most of their acts it's nice to know that, for the most part, they remain true to their original sound. It's never hard to listen to a new artist that Nettwerk has put their faith in. Having enjoyed so many others over the years, I take comfort in knowing that if Nettwerk has put their faith in. Having enjoyed so many others over the years, I take comfort in knowing that if Nettwerk puts it out, it's almost a sure thing for me. They have given myself and others like me some familarity. Being in a business that thrives on comparisons this label set out to forge a niche in the alternative-rock scene, and has done so with style and integrity. I suppose my point in going on about Nettwerk is simply to shed some light on how this group of music lovers, unable to find a mainstream answer to their not-so-easy-on-the-ears question: Who will distribute our noise outside of Canada? came up with their own answer, a decision that has made all the difference. Nettwerk now has offices in New York and London but it's home base is still Vancouver. They have started other brances of the Nettwerk family such as NettMedia, who do all of their enhanced CD's. as well as other small companies that together contribute to giving Nettwerk that leading edge. Also, they now manage such groups as The Barenaked Ladies and Moist and recently allowed some of the worlds best remixers the chance to work with classic Skinny Puppy songs and mix them into almost new masterpieces. Above all Nettwerk has remained as independent as they can be, keeping as much control as possible in a major label market. What it all comes down to is that they still believe in what they are doing and they have integrity, an all too uncommon trait in this day and age.
