It's floating at $17 everywhere, but only $15 at HMV; they also have a two-CD W&S/W&S2 set for $30, which I picked up. I have used up my ten stamps on my HMV club card, and only paid $5. :-) Anyway, this is a really good CD. None of this cheesy Spice Girls/N Sync/BSB/Hanson-bubblegum-wannabe crap. This is a solid record, as in rock solid. You've got Chantal Kreviazuk leading off, waking you up and knocking you off your ass with "Surrounded." Paula Cole follows Chantal with the oh-so-catchy "I Don't Want To Wait" (love that clapping). Sheryl Crow has a great rendition of "Strong Enough," which sounds rather nice, with a bit of an acoustic bent to it. Natalie Imbruglia's "Wishing I Was There" makes me happy to know Left of the Middle is on its way to me. I could go on, but suffice to say, this would be a really nice present for your favourite music fan. Natalie Merchant looks gorgeous on the cover. :-) Oh yeah, I almost forgot. :) Track nineteen is none other than Sarah Slean, with an absolutely stunning version I know. Wow, those strings...about three minutes in. Just blew me away. Way to go, Sarah. HOW COOL IS JAM! MUSIC!??? http://www.canoe.com/PowerReporterContest/home.html Power Reporter Contest JAM! Music, Canada's premier on-line music source, and The Tragically Hip are looking for talent. JAM! Music needs a Power Reporter at each and every show on The Tragically Hip's Winter 1999 Tour. JAM! Music has secured The Power Pass for each stop on the tour - which includes two excellent tickets, backstage passes and access to the venue in the early afternoon so you and your assistant can take in the activities from soundcheck to the final note of the show. You will also be provided dinner at the venue. Our Power Reporter will file stories and provide digital photos for the JAM! Music/TTH Tour web site. All necessary equipment will be provided. Your job is documenting the day The Hip comes to town. In a paragraph or two please explain why you - above everyone else - should be chosen for this hot-ticket assignment. If you need some help, we've posted some of the better entries sent in (so far), so you can size up your competition. The contest is open from December 5th to January 15th. Winners will be contacted by email and first names will be posted at the JAM! Music/TTH Tour web site. During the course of the contest contestants may find their writing posted at the JAM! Music/TTH Tour web site. The Winner's day will go something like this: - Show up early for the show, before the soundcheck if possible. - Pick up your tickets and Backstage Passes. - Pick up the Digital Camera. - Take a ton of pictures. - Write a short afternoon report for the JAM!Music/TTH Tour web site. - Break for dinner. Catering provided. - Take more pictures. - File your final post-concert story for the JAM!Music/TTH Tour web site. - Met the bands. - Grab an autographed tour poster from The Tragically Hip. - Head home. Good luck. Please read the rules to be sure that you qualify for this contest. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Dec 1998 17:08:46 PST From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: Sarah on Rufus/Angel video/Sarah DVD/OAC stuff at HMV Hey, folks... I don't have much time to post these days (exams, you know :(), so this is just one big post to squish everything in ;)... - - There's a blurb from Sarah in the year-end issue of Rolling Stone about crooner Rufus Wainwright as one of her favorite artists of the year: "Rufus Wainwright, because he's brash and unapologeticaly nostalgic in a very charming way. He reminds me of that old lost friend back from some emotional war with the stories he has to tell - entertaining and heartbreaking all at the same time. A must for the romantically inclined." How eloquent. :) Anyhow, I'd also recommend this disc - I really couldn't stand it at first, maybe because his personality came off as really pretentious to me, but now I have to commend the guy for doing things his own way. And now he's got his very own Gap ad, which can be seen several times a day on MuchMusic which is more than can be said for his wonderful, quirky "April Fools" video. ;) - - Speaking of videos, MuchMoreMusic is now running the "video" for Sarah's "Angel". I saw it two nights ago and was floored by how absolutely lovely and moving it is. Is this the official 'video' for the single? People have said they thought the clip was a 'Storytellers' outtake or something, but I think it's taken from the live video that's due out in the Spring. (Can anyone confirm that?) I'm almost sure that it is, and if so, the video is going to be absolutely incredible, because it's done on film, as opposed to video, like the FTE live video, and the shooting is wonderfully nuanced. - - Speaking of Sarah videos, man, I wish I had a DVD player after seeing just the *packaging* for the Sarah video collection DVD at HMV yesterday. Nettwerk always does artistic packaging, but the DVD set is very elegant. - - And finally, after my trip to HMV (it's 2 steps from my school, and I'm there all the time, but I've been trying to stay away lately 'cause I'm broke ), I've been pining for a bunch of stuff (which I *will* get as soon as I get a little richer ): * Singles! There's no real singles market up here, so we get everything late and imported, which of course translates into exorbitant prices . Anyhow, we've finally got these ones that I've been waiting for: - - Chantal's "Leaving on a Jet Plane" single, with the ubiquitous "Dealer" as the B-side - - Tori's split single of "Cruel" and "Raspberry Swirl" remixes! * Natalie's "Ophelia" short film on video with all her videos on it as well! This looks wonderful - did anyone get it yet? * HMV exclusive - "Women and Song" 2 CD-set for $29.99 - good value if you don't have one or the other disc yet. * Nettwerk's "Plastic 2" electronica compilation. Wow - this *rocks*. They were playing this killer remix of Sarah's Delerium track, 'Silence', over the fantastic store P.A., and I knew it had to be from the Plastic comp. Now, I'm normally not a big electronica fan (I don't even like the 'Sweet Surrender' mixes much at all), but the 'Silence' remix is *killer*, and the rest of the disc really rocks as well. Best mixes - the heavy, beats-laden 'Silence', an upbeat, fun take on Cornershop's "Brimful of Asha", and a weird, trippy mix of Autour de Lucie's "Sur Tes Pas". If you're even remotely into a more electronic sound, check this compilation out. Over and out, Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of canadian-music-digest V1 #149 ************************************
