[Jame] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 00:35:32 -0500 From: "Gian.C." Subject: A memorable weekend (Emm, Jess and friends) Hello all, first off, sorry to those who are getting this multiple times, damn me and my cross-posting :) and to all you Sarah Slean fans, there is a tad of Sarah content in here as well. I'll begin with saying this, this past weekend was one of the best weekends i've ever had, but i'll just talk about Saturday :) Saturday afternoon was the Northern Sounds concert which included our very own Jessica Weiser, Dylan White from Emm Gryner's independent label, Daisy Dead Records and Rayanne, a very promising young talent and friend. The concert was a success, everyone had a great time, and the musicians were incredible. This was the first time i've heard Jess perform and i enjoyed it immensely, her voice is beautiful and soothing, Rayanne was equally amazing, playing each song with passion, and Dylan along with backup singer Beth(i think) was awesome. Anything i say won't do justice to how these people performed, i hope to see them many times in the future. There was a great turn out at the venue and everyone seemed like they enjoyed themselves. There was also a surprise special guest, although she didn't perform, she was the celebrity sound engineer for the afternoon :) Emm Gryner was at the show to support all artists involved and she was also treated to a cover of one of her songs 'Hook Machine' performed by Dylan and Beth to end the afternoon's festivities to everyone's enjoyment. I'd just like to say it was nice meeting Julian, Greg, Tab and others at the show. After the afternoon's entertainment came the evening's entertainment where i met up with Steve, Jess, and James to see Emm Gryner open for the Philosopher Kings. Emm's performance was incredible, she's actually getting better with each performance if you can believe it, some songs she played were (in no particular order): Hello Aquarius, Acid, Phone call 45, Wisdom Bus, and This Mad (a capella), she dedicated 'The Good You Make' to Steve and I which i thought was very nice of her and also called Sarah Slean out to accompany her with the song, possibly the highlight of the show, and a close second was her cover of 'Crazy Train' by Ozzy Osbourne, she toned it down to a piano ballad and it was amazing, it blew me away at least :) I probably missed a song or two but that's to be expected with my great memory :P After Emm's set i went out to the lobby where Jess was and after awhile Emm came out and we started talking to her, got a few hugs in and made some small talk, after a few songs from the Philosopher Kings, Steve and James came out to meet us all where we were having drinks and just chit-chatting the night away with Emm and Co. All in all it was a great experience, and much fun was had, as the subject says, it was a memorable weekend to say the least :) Jess, glad you had a good time and i can't wait to hear you play again :) Welp, that's all folks, take care, :) - -Gian ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Nov 1998 02:07:37 -0500 From: Steve I Subject: Re: PK/Emm review in National Post At 10:21 AM 11/23/98 -0500, Paul Schreiber wrote: >(1) Someone explain this Sophia thing to me. I rest my case. ;-) >(3) She won the Q songwriting award as well as the mix one? any others i'm > missing? The Kamesan Humanitarian award. It's new! Emm Gryner is simply one of the kindest, most generous human beings I have ever met, and I can't even begin to describe the depths of her coolness. Just to give one tiny example, she and Joni took time out of a jam-packed schedule of interviews, meetings, etc. on her only hometown stop of a big tour Saturday to come to our tiny little show to support a few new singer-songwriters. Not only that, but she quietly and inobtrusively (as possible under the circumstances) did the sound for us, completely content to step into a supporting role and let some much lesser known friends take the spotlight. I think that even a few Emm fans in the audience didn't realize it was her until I thanked "our celebrity sound tech" for her efforts. Later that day she would dazzle a crowd of 1300 in her more traditional role as a performer. And that's just one of the many acts of generosity I've seen Emm perform that continue to impress me. There are even greater acts of generosity I've seen her perform that I can't even mention for fear of invading her privacy. These are all the more impressive because they're done in secret, with no fanfare or publicity. Some artists you meet disappoint you because however great their music may be, they fail to make the grade as human beings. Emm Gryner, however, does not disappoint; in fact, she is perhaps the finest human being I know. Emm Gryner did a wonderful job looking after the sound (good thing because James and I had very little idea of what we were doing) All you folks who came out were absolutely fantastic... I thank you all for making out little show a big success! I'm happy to report that we generated over $200 of food and drink sales and collected over $100 to support the artists, just by passing a hat! I should mention that if you liked that show or missed it and would like a chance to see these talented artists, Dylan (and probably Bev) will be headlining a show at Holy Joe's on December 1st, with Rayanne and one other artist (whose name I forget) opening. >This was the first time i've heard Jess perform and i >enjoyed it immensely, her voice is beautiful and soothing, Rayanne was >equally amazing, playing each song with passion, and Dylan along with >backup singer Beth(i think) was awesome. I'll add that it was really cool to finally meet Emm's drummer, Stephen McGrath. What an amazingly talented and cool guy. James and I had to leave to see Danny Michel play across town so we dropped off Jess and booted it to the Reverb where Danny was playing. There we found Sarah Slean, who told us that she'd been really nervous playing with Emm because she couldn't hear herself singing at all. Not bad for a performance completely guided by the physical feel of her vocal cords, huh? Anyway it was a truly unforgettable day.
