Hey kids, If y'all can't get to Miss Polly Jean Harvey in TO on Friday. Ya might want to check out to mondo cool, really nice, wonderful Guelph performers. Vicki Fraser (Crowsfeet) (a contender for this past year's LF Acoustic Stage, she didn't make it :-( ) And my favourite Tuesday morning DJ Luka Symmons (ex-Corduroy Leda). They'll be at Graffiti's on Friday. Vicki does some neat folky tunes. She has a wonderful voice and a happy disposition and takes a particular joy in singing. Luka is, a bit kooky, but she's a fine musician and has some really cool songs. The Guelph scene is fairly tight knit so you might see such luminaries as Lew Melville (Rheostatics, Skydiggers), Dave Teichroeb (The Dissemblers), and Tannis Slimmon (The Bird Sisters, Crowsfeet) floating around there. I think everyone I've mentioned in this message except Luka is on DROG Records. James. P.S. I keep forgetting Mia Sheard is on DROG too!! P.P.S. As far as I'm aware, Luka, does _not_ live on the second floor.. P.P.P.S Link: http://www.drog.com/drog/catalog/bands/fraser.html P.P.P.P.S. DROG has a Cambodia benefit album out featuring improvs from a whole pile of Guelph musicians. Great music and a great cause! P.P.P.P.P.S. I think I have too many P.S.'s... *sigh* ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- "There's an intangible element to any live musical performance, a mix of magic and electricity that can make the difference between a good night out and the greatest night of your life." - - The Tragically Hip - Live Between Us, Explained ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 09:26:44 -0500 (EST) From: James McGarry Subject: Re: six degrees of much On Mon, 26 Oct 1998, Steve I wrote: > Now what are the chances that they'll show videos by Emm Gryner, Sarah > Slean, Melanie Doane, Dayna Manning, and David Usher? Somewhere along the line (I think it might have been when I read the list of Lilith Fair Acoustic Stage contenders), I heard about Vicki Fraser and bought her cd "Dynamite Opening." I just put it on right now so that maybe I could figure out a comparison for y'all. She has kind of a low, husky/ whispery voice. Maybe kind of like folksinger Catie Curtis? I know there's a better comparison, but I just can't think of the name....but maybe that's a good thing. Anyway, she's definitely worth checking out. She's written some excellent tunes! Not as deep as Janice Hagan and a bit lighter. Sometimes a hint of Margo Timmins with a taste of... ...wait, Jill's right there is a much better comparison, but I can't think of the name either. :-) D'oh! > Anyway, she's definitely worth checking out. "Broken Melodies" (a song about breaking up while waltzing), "Murphy's Waltz" (another waltzing mishap), "Desperate Times" (about Davis Inlet) (On The Goods compilation album, you should pick that one up too Jill :-) ), and lots o' others. Hey Music Fans! I seem to be having trouble getting my tapes from a trader that lists herself as "Kim Littlejohn" on TapeTracker http://www.tapetracker.com . It's been quite a few weeks now and I know of other people who've had problems trading with her, whether it's taken reeeeeeally loooooong to get their tapes or they never got them at all. Her email is silverkat@earthlink.net was silverk@mailcity.com [it's seems to have changed a lot in the past couple of months?] URL: http://www.angelfire.com/nj/silverkat Address: Kim Littlejohn Morris Plains, NJ 07950 USA I'm not going to say she's a bad trader yet, b/c she has sent me some reasons/excuses as to why I haven't recieved them, but that was 2 weeks ago when she said that she was going to send them [again]. I've emailed her 2 times since then, and still have not recieved a response *or* the tapes. If anyone knows anything about "Kim", has traded with her, knows someone who has, etc. please let me know. She trades primarily the Lilithy type of artists such as Sarah, Chantal, Emm, Tori, Jewel, etc. I know she's on at least one of these lists, has been a Believer [dunno if she still is] and judging from the who is list, she's on Emm's Headline girl list, so if you're out there Kim, lemme know what's up?!? I'm sorry if this just adds to your pile of no Sarah/Chantal/Emm/Dayna/Mary Lou content, but I think it's kinda important to share with each other bad trading experiences so that others won't have to deal with them...anyways please help me out if you can. Thanks for the time! Please let me know... ~Andrea! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ICQ: 10294764 AOL IM: TheAndyC "I am breathless by the mercy of a smile" - -Jann Arden http://listen.to/canadianmusic - http://listen.to/boots - http://travel.to/thecomfortzone ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 20:53:37 PST From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: Re: Rufus meets Sloan James wrote: >Several weeks ago on Sat, 3 Oct 1998, Tabs wrote: >> Um, okay, which brainer decided to have *Rufus Wainwright* open >>for Sloan on some of their Canadian tour dates?! There is a bit of cross-over, but Sloan fans by and large >don't seem to be Rufus' fans. Y'*think*? I mean, I'm all for distinct musical styles and all, I'm not saying they have to have an alt-pop/rock group opening, but there's no correlation whatsoever here, and it seems they're just setting Rufus up for a really poor reception. I'm sure he'll win over a few people, but... But I wouldn't put too much faith in anything going on on *any* of the stupid music newsgroups. I haven't even bothered to check any of them out in almost a year - they're usually a bastion of flaming and really stupid questions/posts. - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Oct 1998 21:01:21 PST From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: Re: It's that wonderful time of the yeeear!
