There is a bit of cross-over, but Sloan fans by and large don't seem to be Rufus' fans. *sigh* James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 11:35:19 -0500 (EST) From: James McGarry Subject: The Swing Gang The Swing Gang, the Palace (Guelph, ON) Now, you probably haven't heard of the Swing Gang. But you have heard of its individual members, particularly Tory Cassis and Tyler Yarema. The Swing Gang seems to be a bit of a Best Of Swing for the Toronto Swing crowd. Tyler and Tory are regulars at that downtown haven of Swing, the Reservoir Lounge. For me it was nice to see Tory with a band behind him and it was also nice to see Jesse Barksdale (ex-Big Rude Jake) still plugging a way at the swing thing. Tory, wow, I still can't get over his voice. Gooey, thick, sweeeeet. The man amazes me every single time. This was the first time I'd heard Tyler live, he was suitably impressive. Strong musicianship runs through this bunch like a raging river. Nearly everyone plays multiple instruments and _everyone_ was lining up for a turn at the mike. Tyler's trumpeteering is phenomenal, he has a good feel for a turn of musical phrase and uses the plunger mute far better than his youth might make you think he should. The collective has a very diverse age group, from Tyler and Terry to Terry Wilkins on the standup bass and Bob Vespaziani on skins. Advertisers are probably wetting themselves on the Swing demographic! A big and pleasant surprise was a few guest vocals by Janice Hagan, whoa baby, this grrl has a set of pipes on her. She can Sing! See her Wednesday's at the Reservoir. (Trying... ...not ...to... drool!). Her voice is the perfect complement to Tory's, rich, textured, smoky, sultry. She was born to sing this kind of music! Double wow! I hope to catch her solo show sometime! James. P.S. Next up for Swing in Guelph, Johnny Favourite Swing Orchestra, Nov. 15 @ The Palace. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 11:43:03 -0500 (EST) From: 00jnweiser@bsuvc.bsu.edu Subject: me roadtripping to toronto to see the emm/philosopher kings show? Just wondering a couple of things about the Emm/Philosopher Kings show on the 21st of Nov b/c I'm really, really, really close to getting a plane ticket to come up there Nov. 20-22... In fact, I'm pretty much 90% sure I'll be there if I can find a cheap ticket... 1) how big is this show going to be and where/how can i get a ticket (does anyone have an extra i can buy??) 2) place to stay--are there cheap hotels up there? and what's the transit system like. i don't really want to have to rely on anyone else to take me around and stuff like that... 3) who else is going, who else can i meet?? :) Please reply to me privately and hopefully I can work this out--I really like the PKs and even though Emm's set will be short, I want to see her live and need to get outta here... I had a great time there when I was visiting Toronto in August. Great music and great dancing. It was a treat to see Tory playing trumpet in addition to singing. :-) Mary Angelfire for your free web-based e-mail. http://www.angelfire.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 26 Oct 1998 18:54:08 -0500 From: "Andrea " Subject: It's that wonderful time of the yeeear!
