Jennifer Kimball WILL be doing a living room concert at my house in Mason, Ohio (19 miles north of Cincinnati) on Sunday, November 15th, at 7:00 pm. She'll be performing a 60 to 75 minute set and then hanging around afterwards to chat and sell and sign cds and stuff. Then she'll be my sleep-over guest! ;-) There will be a $10 per person charge for this event, and if you've never seen Jennifer perform before, let me tell you -- that's a real bargain! She's definitely worth a lot more! Also, there is a cap of 50 people for the show, so let me know as soon as possible if you'd like to reserve a space. I will need to know how many others you plan to bring with you, too. Here is a list of people whose reservations I've received so far: Andrea Rotter (2 or 3) Karli (2) Allison (2 or 3) Greg Dunn Jessica Weiser Edward Sterling Bill Nguyen Kevin Flynn Mary Longo (2) Penny Morris (2) Lisa Robbins Mary Pascoe ? It would be helpful if some of you who plan to attend could bring snacks/drinks so that I don't go broke with this. Instead, since it appears that Jennifer will be using my piano for this show, I'm spending my money on getting it tuned!! ;-) Finally.....I'm working on getting an opening act approved....hope to get the final word today. I'll keep y'all posted! Excitedly yours, Jill :D ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Oct 1998 17:14:33 -0400 (EDT) From: James McGarry Subject: Rufus Content I'm not sure if I've posted this info before. If I have apologies, it wasn't in my outbasket... Its been a few weeks after finally following Steve Ito's admonition to purchase Rufus' cd. I did, and loved it. And now... For big Rufus' fans, there's The McGarrigle Hour, Kate and Anna McGarrigle (Rufus' mom and aunt), Loudon Wainright (Rufus' dad), Martha Wainright (Rufus sister), and various other McGarrigles and Friends (including a very charming cajun ballad La Porte en Arriere with Emmy Lou Harris; this brought some very early memories back for me of family gatherings in 60's Hull, I'd play the spoons :-) ). There's only one Rufus only song, Heartburn, and in _very_ typical Rufus fashion he describes it thusly, "Words fail me. This song might be about love or it might be about Ebola, I can't be sure -- but I am sure there was some major partying going on during the recording. A Rufus Wainwright classic." :-) You can heard his very distinctive voice on nearly all the tracks he's on. He sorta sneaks up on ya in his dad's "Schooldays", but you _know_ when its Rufus. He quietly blends in with his immediate family on the Irvin Berlin tune "What'll I Do" which he sang at his Grandmother's funeral. Much of this is in Canadianesque folk tradition and may not have a very wide appeal. Still, its a fascinating glimpse inside the McGarrigle clan via song. And really, part of this goes back to several things I'd been thinking about (1) The Rufus & Sean Lennon show at Lee's where Rufus got his mom to come up and sing with him (and more specifically that that show was about love; Sean's love for Yuka and Rufus' love for his mom) and (2) how good musicians seem to love music, and live music And this cd is a very good example of both... GoW was one of my > favourite bands in early University... ...circa '85-86 or so. They did > some neat-o free shows back then... i think i know what you mean. i noticed it at least on a song by song basis. some songs just sounded too much like GOW and you couldn't get past the fact that's who they used to be. then the next song would be totally different from anything GOW had and you noticed how it sounded nothing like GOW. plus it didn't help that when ginger first toured they did both ginger and GOW songs. anyways, i hope that GOW (the new version) come out with something new. they were one of my favourite bands (a bit later then the dates you mentioned) and i have lots of high school memories tied up with them. after all they were the first band me and my friends ever stalked. ang ------------------------------ End of canadian-music-digest V1 #105 ************************************
