Dayna's hasn't been updated in eight months or so, save some tour dates, and Chantal's looks old, too. The Jewel web site (okay so this isn't Canadian) is in need of some reworking -- it's also old, and some of the information is inaccurate and doesn't reflect the fact that her new album, Spirit is coming out November 17th. dianakrall.com is coming soon last time I checked. "I wanted to get a bunch of guys together and go out on tour," Frasier founder Poltz told allstar following the show. "I was on the road with Rufus Wainwright, and he came up with the name. Everybody saw that I took four male singer/ songwriters, and they'd say, 'Oh, like a male Lilith.'... So Rufus said, 'Frasier Fair'-- it's kind of an homage to Lilith, who dated Frasier." That, of course, is a reference to Kelsey Grammar's character on TV's Cheers and Frasier, whose estranged mate bears the same name as Sarah McLachlan's all- female music fest. (However, McLachlan's Lilith Fair is actually named after the Biblical female who supposedly preceded Eve as the first woman in the Garden of Eden.) "I think it's better than The All-Male Singer/ Songwriter Tour," Poltz added with a laugh. As promised, each of the players appeared onstage alone, armed with only guitars and vocal mikes, creating an ambient atmosphere which had more to do with music than setting. Phillips headlined the show, playing about a 40-minute mix of solo material and Toad favorites, including one of the group's biggest hits, "All I Want," and audience requests "Crowing" and "Stupid," as well as the album cut "Liars Everywhere." Included among his solo takes was a light- hearted piece about a box with his father's ashes, which his family kept in their garage for quite some time following his passing, which drew laughs from the attentive crowd. On just before Phillips, Poltz clearly dominated his hometown crowd, as he frolicked through songs from his solo album, One Left Shoe, along with songs he wrote while with the Rugburns. He closed his set with a humorous - - -- and surprisingly effective -- cover of R&B trio TLC's "Waterfalls," before returning for an encore which included the much- requested "Me and Eddie Vedder" and the invigorating acrostic "ABC's." With his tongue planted firmly in his cheek, Poltz chatted with audience members throughout the set, and was clearly the favorite of the night, as many of the packed-in fans left the room following his performance. Former X frontman Doe proved that punk rockers do ripen with age, playing a loud but mellow set, and also utilizing the only electric guitar of the evening, before returning to an acoustic six-string to close out his set. And opener Droge set the mood for the evening with somber guitar strumming and his often Tom Petty- like vocals, playing material spanning his several album releases, including "Fourth of July," "Blindly," and a slightly bluegrass version of his hit "If You Don't Want Me, I'll Kill Myself." On the whole, all four left a lasting impression that singer/songwriter fare is not an estrogen- only product. While Poltz says that he hopes Kelsey Grammar will show up for one of the Frasier Fair dates, the actor can rest easy knowing that his character's name is being tied to an event of top-notch artistry which can only bring it credit. - - - Jeremy M.
