The music of Quebec. Well, ok we talked about Lhasa de Sela a bit, and she does _live_ in Montreal, but her music is more latiny/World Beat/fusion. I'm looking for recommendations... ...particularly along the lines of a young Jacques Brel or Edith Piaf. I like a bit of what Claire Pelletier is doing, but on the whole its a bit too pop-oriented for my taste. I've heard Murmures d'histoire is a less so and more Celtic influenced (for those of you who forget Gaul was a Celtic nation :-) too.) drawing comparisons to Loreena McKennitt (that was in Le Devoir sometime last year). There was also this video several years ago with a charming chantouse which featured dancers from La La La Human Steps. (I caught a lot of _them_ on Bowie's Sound and Vision Tour, yummy choreography, nearly as yummy as Danny Grossman's, I just love his stuff.) And what ever happened to Mitsou? A beintot, Jacques... er... As impersonal as it may seem, I have had to resort to writing all of you back with one letter. It's something I never wanted to do. I wanted to be very that very accessible artist who has a personal relationship with everyone, and heck, I still want to be that way. It's just that there are so damn many of you now, I just cannot keep up. I'm especially overwhelmed these days because I've actually begun work on the next CD, and as most of you know, I need to be entirely hands-on in the studio. There won't be anything on the CD, from drums to bass lines to EQ's, that I haven't personalized. And all of that, combined with writing the songs, the show biz politics - oh yeah - and eating and sleeping (a little), leave me with brains of jelly when it comes to simple tasks - like letter writing, driving, banking and speaking! For those of you who have contacted me from territories where my CD is not available, my webmaster - Andrew- has set up a link from my site to the site of "CD Plus", an on-line CD store. For those of you who want to know when my new CD will be out - it's hard to say. I want it to be stupendous, and stupendous takes time. So keep listening to "Angels and Ordinary Men" - for now - maybe you should try listening to it backwards - for some variety, in case you've gotten tired of any tracks, and just know that the recording has begun on CD#2 - release date unknown at this time due to perfectionism! As for gigs - I'm not really concentrating on any out of studio musical experiences right now. I am doing a very cool gig on Oct. 22nd called "The 1998 Modern Woman Celebration of Sisters". It's an event held at the Royal York Hotel Concert Hall in Toronto to celebrate Sisterhood and womanhood and all things girlie!!! I can't wait! But, before anyone tries to get tickets - I must tell you I think it's private, an invitation only kind of thing. I do hope this letter doesn't feel like some dumb form letter - `cause it's not. I'm talking directly to all of you - Charettes, Tabatha, K.K., Adrian and everyone! Bye for Now.. She has a really nice smile too. ;-) I when and checked out Wendy's site, her on-line diary actually has an entry re: the OPAL Benefit: "A Toronto Gig just came up so I thought I'd let you all know about it. Besides, it's a benefit for an important cause; Aids Research. It's called "Opal '97", and it's geared toward making young women more aware of HIV and AIDS, as it is affecting this demographic at an alarming rate." James. Its tough to take that much time. > (and what *is* AOR?) AOR = Adult-Oriented Rock ... typically an AM format that plays, a more gentle type of rock music (and now alternative) that isn't as harsh as more Edgish stations. In Toronto The Mix follows a very AOR type pattern and aside from some segments (Neil Mann's thing, Live in Toronto w. Kim Hughes and that Allan Cross thang) CFNY tries to as much as its demographic will allow. In general, AOR is not a very favourable thing for me, but, hey, RIW's (Record Industry Weasels - "heeeeey") love it. :-P Apologies to any RIW's who are considering me for A&R posts ;-P Other formats: (this is very much oriented to Jill...) + examples Adult Alternative (WWCD in Columbus) Alternative Rock/New Rock/Alternative Rock (WAQZ in Cinci) AC - Adult Comtemporary (+ "Hot" AC) (WMVX in Cleveland) New AC/Light Jazz (WVAE in Cinci) Soft AC = Easy Listening News/Talk Radio Sports Rock (WEBN in Cinci) Classic Rock/Oldies (WNCX Cleveland) CHR - Contemporary Hit Radio / TOP 40 (WKQR in Cinci) Classical Urban/Urban AC (WZAK in Cleveland) Religious/Contemporary Christian Jazz Country New Country and Misc :-) There's a BIG list here (they sort by format and call letters): http://www.radio-directory.com/ And some _very_ basic descriptions here: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/4656/03rockrd.htm I've left most of the obvious ones blank, Country, Classical and Jazz are pretty obvious. The other splinters of Rock are marketing tools to get particular demographics or more of the market share. CFNY (Toronto) became AOR/CHR just after they were taken over a few years ago... and after Alternative went Mainstream... they tend slightly to Alternative Rock + AOR + CHR, _very_, _very_, _very_ commercially driven especially in their demographics; _very_. Keep in mind marketing ppl don't want you to know this information. It makes you too saavy to sell you things you don't want :-) *sigh* :-) I'll be ok, really. Hmmm. I always thought it was *Album* Oriented Rock, but maybe we're talking about the same thing anyway. Or maybe it's a Canada/U.S. thing. Stations like WRIF (or the now-defunct - I think - WLLZ) in Detroit, QWK Rock in State College...I don't have a wide radio market experience, and I'm not a big AOR fan either. I always saw it as straight-ahead rock, actually, not particularly gentle - plays a smattering of classic rock stuff (well, since in the early days of AOR what is now "classic rock" was just called "rock"!), some of the rockier "alternative" stuff (bush, matchbox 20, U2 [old U2, mostly], Nirvana), just plain rock (Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Metallica, Stevie Ray Vaughn). You won't hear many women's voices, except maybe Melissa Etheridge and a few others. It was "album" oriented rock, because originally these were bands (today's "classic" rock bands) that didn't really release or succeed with singles, but their entire albums did well in sales. Think Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Once "Classic" rock and "alternative" stations came along (though my preference is AAA stations like the River in Detroit - actually Windsor, and there's my ObCanCon! - we don't have any here in state college), there was nothing for me to listen to on AOR that I couldn't find elsewhere. Anyway, that's my take on AOR. I don't know if I'm right, but that's the impression I've always gotten. :-) pax, Sarah (back to lurk mode) ps. more CanCon - the Hip are coming to State College! That kicks ass! ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Oct 1998 14:48:40 PDT From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: New Wild Strawberries mailing list!
