Hawkins! [Paul Schreiber Subject: OAC: Frasier Fair article http://www.suntimes.com/output/show/lilith.html `Frasier Fair' would give men their own tour September 30, 1998 BY JAE-HA KIM STAFF REPORTER The women have Lilith Fair. And if singer-songwriter Steve Poltz gets his way, the men will have Frasier Fair. While the tour name hasn't been finalized yet, the tour will kick off Oct. 13 on the West Coast. The rotating lineup will include male singer-songwriters such as Poltz, Rufus Wainwright, Vic Chesnutt, Pete Droge, John Doe of X and Glen Phillips of the defunct Toad the Wet Sprocket. ``I got the idea for the tour when I was out on the road this summer with Lisa Loeb and Rufus Wainwright,'' said Poltz, who founded the tour. ``I thought Lilith Fair was such a good idea. I was half joking when I told Rufus, `I want to do my own male take on it.' ``Rufus looked at me and said, `Oh, so you mean Frasier Fair' [referring to the `Cheers' characters Lilith and Frasier Crane]. I thought that was brilliant.'' Gary Bongiovanni of Pollstar, the trade publication that tracks concerts nationwide, said the tour sounds promising. ``It's a very interesting project,'' Bongiovanni said. ``These are all really talented artists who, at this point in their careers, couldn't play [1,000-seat] facilities by themselves. But there is a definite market for these acts who focus on songwriting and are really strong solo performers. This is a great vehicle for acts to play nicer facilities than a smoky club or bar.'' Much as Lilith Fair was formed to tout female artists, Poltz's tour was organized to showcase male singer-songwriters who don't necessarily get a lot of commercial attention. But Poltz doesn't plan to exclude women or any genre of music from the tour. ``This [fall tour] is just the beginning,'' Poltz said. ``I want to do this every fall and spring. And I would love to get Rickie Lee Jones to play with us, because she is the reigning queen of all the things in the world. ``I want to see different people come out and play solo onstage. If I could get Iggy Pop and Willie Nelson to join us, that would be so great.'' Sources say a Park West gig during the first week of November should be announced soon. shad 96c / 3A CS / mac activist / eda / fumbler fan of / jewel / sophie b. hawkins / sarah slean / steve poltz / / x-files / buffy / dawson's creek / habs / bills / 49ers / t h i n k d i f f e r e n t. These guys are going places, they're absolutely fantastic. They're even better now that they added eversocool Danny Michel (of Danny Michel and the Wedding Band). The stage antics between Ian and Danny were absolutely priceless. At one point when it was only Danny and the percussionist playing, Danny abruptly stopped his bass line, ***wiped his nose*** for a few seconds (during which time there was just a steady rhythm from the snare going), and then just as abruptly went back into his bass line completely nonchalantly as if no one could possibly notice that he hadn't been playing for a couple of bars. The next few bars were drowned out by the roar of the audience's laughter. :-) When the laughing died down, Ian remarked something to the effect of "you just lost your fee for tonight's show, mister..." In the encore, they switched instruments so Danny was playing guitar and Ian was playing bass. At this point they decided to each do an impression of the other playing their instrument... and Danny experimenting with the effects pedals was another priceless moment in the show that I'll remember for a long time. In short, in addition to the amazing music, these guys put on a mesmerizingly good show. They also perform together as Danny Michel and the Wedding Band, which apparently consists of the same guys but with Danny playing guitar and Ian playing bass, and they play Danny's songs instead of Ian's. As a point of interest, Sarah Slean and the omnipresent Wendy and Jude tried to get me to go to Danny's shows a month ago but I managed to miss them... now I totally regret it. If either Starling or Danny Michel and the Wedding Band come and play in your area, do NOT miss it. It becomes stranger each time there's a new factor added. Its getting awful hard to believe really. I mean the odds! It seats, what 550? Its one of the only places where I can actually see how different my life would've been if I hadn't gone. I wouldn't've posted to that newsgroup, wouldn't've met Steve, and hence, Dan, Gian, Rachel, etc. etc. And to top it all off, I went on a whim, missed the opener (Tamara Williamson) and managed to get one of the very last tickets, it sold out mere minutes later. I wasn't really coming into Toronto a lot for shows at that point and have a poor sense of direction, and left _very_ late but somehow managed to get there and get parked in time. In some small manner, its a solid argument for determinism. If I didn't have such a fervent belief in a statistical universe (quantum mechanical) I'd be sold! > Oh BTW while I'm binge-posting I should mention I saw the terrific Ottawa > band Starling again on Friday night. Hawkins! *************************************************************************** **** Even if you aren't a fan of Sophie's, read on. This is an important issue concerning artistic freedom everywhere. It's an opportunity for you to make a difference. *************************************************************************** **** Singer-songwriter Sophie B. Hawkins' third album, "Timbre," was scheduled to be in stores on October 6, 1998. However, Sony decided not to release it. Despite the album having been completed a year ago, Sony refuses to release it on the basis that the use of a banjo in the song "Lose Your Way" *isn't commercial enough*. They want her to use a guitar. This is a blatant slap in the face to artistic freedom! Sophie was recently in Tampa, FL to screen her film "The Cream Will Rise." Janice, the webmaster for the film festival, informed Sophie that legions of her fans on the Internet wanted to know what was up with her album. She posted a personal message to usenet asking for her fans' help. She's asked us to call Sony and insist that she be allowed to include the banjo. Sony must let Sophie follow her artistic vision. Sophie's message: >Hey everybody out there this is Sophie B. Hawkins, I need your help in >getting my record out, it's been done for a year and we are in a stalemate >over the banjo, which is the instrument on which I wrote my song "Lose your >way". She's collecting the emails and faxing them over to Sophie. Already, there have been over forty letters of protest. She wants over 100 by the end of the week. In your letter it is *important* that you mention that banjo. Be sure to use phrases like "butt out Sony" as well. If you work for a a radio station, or know someone that does, call Sony and tell them you will *refuse* to play "Lose Your Way" without the banjo. The Sophie B. Hawkins mailing list is .
