Performing since the age of 16, the crisp sensuous-voiced young woman won a scholarship to Berklee before even finishing high school. Now 21, her debut album includes a half a dozen original jazz-pop tunes. The rest are standards given quite unusual renderings. The album was produced by Grammy-nominee and Juno Award winner Rick Kilburn. ****************************************************************************** ******** A review at www.thefestival.bc.ca (you can also hear an audio clip at this site): One of the truly great things happening in music these days is the way young artists like Coco Love Alcorn are creating music from a much broader tableau. Combine that with the energy of an artist in discovery of the possibilities, and a healthy disrespect for musical boundaries, and you have a pretty potent force. Her father is John Alcorn, the Canadian jazz musician known both as a player and a composer. Coco was playing trumpet by the time she was 12. She started singing when she was 16 and had earned a scholarship to the Berklee School of Music before she left high school. Seven years later, you can hear the jazz in her voice, but you can also hear a little hip-hop and a whole lot more. Like some other Vancouver artists, she has heard the siren's call to Toronto. It seems to be going well and she's keeping busy with all sorts of gigs. One night she did an impromptu set at a birthday party at the Cameron House. When she finished, one fan in the audience led the call for an encore. It turned out the fan was Ani DiFranco and a few months later Coco was opening for Ani on part of her American tour. Now Coco's going back to those same cities on her own. There are a lot of artists, young and old, who play things pretty safe. They make good music too -- sometimes even great music, but they never really seem to break a sweat or take a chance on magic. Then there are the young artists who sound so much like Ani or Sarah that it's a little frightening. Coco is none of these. She's more than the sum of what she has listened to, she is putting it together in ways that sound like no one else. ****************************************************************************** ********* An older review from www.dropd.com/issue/6/54-40/index.html: At 10:30, a sweet-voiced Vancouver songstress, Coco Love Alcorn, quietly took to the stage. Subtly backed by bass, drums and softly coo-ing Hammond and Rhodes keyboards, she had the full attention of the burgeoning crowd. Occasionally she added an acoustic guitar to round out the sound, but I think she could have wowed us on the strength of her singing alone. Full-bodied and melodic, Coco's voice has a range and versatility which captivated the room with her contemporary renditions of original material steeped in jazz and soul roots. Shades of Aretha Franklin, Nat King Cole and a touch o' dance. Coco chose to end her half-hour set with her single "New World Up," a dance-ish and optimistic little number which buoyed the room's energy level up almost to the point of levitation. Perhaps it was a rather unusual crowd for Coco Love Alcorn to be playing in front of, but, then again, what better way for her to reach a wider fan base? As it was a Music West show, the audience was likely more receptive to hearing new and different talent than what might be expected on the bill had this been a regular 54-50 show. Suffice to say, Coco won over a diverse populace of music fans this evening and, if she can continue to do so, we'll be hearing her around for some time to come. ****************************************************************************** ** Tour dates (from indiepool.com): Coco Love Alcorn (With 54-40 ) Oct 8 VICTORIA, B.C. @ McPherson Theatre Oct 9 NANAIMO, B.C. @ Port Theatre Oct 13 CALGARY, AB @ Max Bell Theatre Oct 14 SASKATOON, SK @ Place Riel Theatre Oct 15 EDMONTON, AB @ Myer Horowitz Theatre Oct 16 REGINA, SK @ Doris Knight Hall Oct 17 WINNIPEG, MB @ Walker Theatre Oct 19 THUNDER BAY, ON @ The Outpost Oct 22 SAULT STE MARIE @ Princess Theatre Oct 23 SUDBURY, ON @ Big Thunder Oct 26 OTTAWA, ON @ Barrymore's Oct 27 LONDON, ON @ The Drink Oct 28 TORONTO, ON @ The Phoenix Oct 29 GUELPH, ON @ Club Denim Oct 30 KINGSTON, ON @ Grand Theatre Oct 31 MONTREAL, PQ @ Cabaret Music Hall Nov 3 HAMILTON, ON @ Mohawk College ****************************************************************************** ******** My personal opinion? Coco Love Alcorn is a fantastic jazz singer! And before I'd read that she had opened for Ani DiFranco, I was thinking that on Happy Pockets she sometimes sounds like Ani. And she does a spoken word track which sounds a lot like Meryn Cadell. Oh, and Shawna......I haven't heard the line you wanted on either of her two cds......so maybe it was a new song she's written...... I really liked Sarah's show on Thursday. Went to bed at 1:38 in the morning. First, I ran into like a zillion people I knew: Ed, Dave and Avery came up from Waterloo[*]; Amanda; Steve, Rachel, Gian and James. I (finally) met Heather. Said hi to Kevin Fox again. Chatted with Sarah for a bit. Some guy, also named Steve, recognized me from being at some previous Sarah show. The effect, I pointed out to Steve (Ito), was really cool. [*] we planned this, so i didn't "run into" them technically :) I know (pun noted) James has posted a setlist, but some notes on what I remembered: - - Bonnie's Song. I had asked someone about what song in Sarah's bio refers to evil gas companies, and they told me about Bonnie's Song, but that Sarah hadn't played it in a while. She has played it at the last two shows I've been to. - - The opening song was Pie Jesu, done by the instrumental string quartet only, no Sarah. It was really nice - - Julia (OLP cover). Sarah made some note about not usually doing this/not having done it in a long time. - - Playing cards with judas - - She did most of "Universe": Universe, Weight, I Know, Angel, John xxiii. Sarah had a new song about love; she referred to child's red light-green light game, and how love can happen unexpectedly. Somewhere around this, she mentioned having recently fallen in love, and the guy told her "I have nothing to offer you." She said her reply was "I don't need you to buy me dinner. I just need you to love me." I think this the first time I've heard something like that from her. This is neat. She did the mallet song -- the one with the "Martin" story -- which she didn't tell. Her string section, she noted, go to U of T, and "they know Martin." Sarah used a lyric sheet for one of her songs, 'cause it was so new. This was only show five for me; it's easily #2 on my list, with #1 being the Waterloo show. Much nicer than the last Reverb show I went to in May. I was afraid she wasn't going to tell any stories, because she more or less didn't for the first half of the set, but she did near the end. Yay! The thing is, I love stories with my music, which is probably one of the reasons I'm such a big fan of Steve Poltz. : - ) Paul shad 96c / 3A CS / mac activist / eda / fumbler fan of / jewel / sophie b. hawkins / sarah slean / steve poltz / / x-files / buffy / dawson's creek / habs / bills / 49ers / t h i n k d i f f e r e n t.
