(I'm looking that the credits more carefully these days!) And as a good deal of us know, (a) the old adage about you have a lifetime to make the first album and 6 months to make the second no longer holds water and (b) sometimes its takes a while for various reasons. I think we'll hear more from her soon... ...I vaguely recall hearing something.. vaguely... maybe I even overheard it, all I know is I didn't write it down... curse my memory! > under-attended pre-Lilith triple bill of former Nettwerk songbird > Suzanne Little, Melanie Doane, and Damhnait Doyle at the Bathurst Street I wish we'd hear more from Suzanne Little, I've always had a soft soft in my heart (and music allowance) for Suzanne, Lava Hay... It was a tremendous show, at least on the part of Suzanne and especially Melanie. After them though I found Damnhait Doyle to be a huge yawn. Not that she was bad but she didn't even come close to the giant expectations engendered by all the media hype going on at the time. The encore at the end with all three women was drop-dead amazing though. Unfortunately the low turnout at that show is probably a big reason for the paucity of shows there since then. Very sad, since it's one of the best venues I've ever seen. Steve P.S. Although I found Damnhait less than stellar the two times I saw her that year, when I saw her at a songwriters showcase last year, I found her to be much improved. I liked her stuff, she has a very powerful presense. The Planet Smasher's: My favouirite Montreal ska band... ...if Guelph's own Flashlight is opening, look out, it'll be a great show! Great! Skank 'til you drop kids! And go annoy both Matts! Cat Power has a cool review in this month's CMJ (pick it up also for Varttina and Medaeval Baebes... oh and Lisahall (all one word). Oh and Fantastic Plastic Machine.) And on Steve's insistance, I finally picked up Rufus Wainright's CD. Marvelous. I was quite impressed. I love Rufus live, he's got a way with the crowd, or has his way with the crowd, sometimes its one in the same... ...but this CD had a lot of charm. I particularly liked "In My Arms" much better than it was live, which is odd for both me and Rufus, he's better live and I usually like live music better, capice? I wondered why until looking at the credits, Ash Sood on drums (wow my second favourite drummer), Yves Desrosier on guitar (Lhasa), wow, just... ...wow! The only slight failing I'll note is Barcelona, it is so much, so very much more powerful in person. Its a very personal song and suffers in the translation to recorded medium. Live, in concert, Barcelona is probably my favourite Rufus song (though, Imaginary Love is a _very_ close second). The emotion that comes across through his voice when singing it, I swear, I can _taste_ an Albarino wine on my palette, he brings you so close to Spain in that song. A! Its just amazing. I'm still marvelling over that show in Guelph, teeeeny tiny place, Emm and Rufus together. WOW! I didn't quite intend this message to be so long.... ...sorry. Why, yes, he is. John Alcorn, singer/songwriter/composer, lightish jazz. Very influencial... Beverly Taft form the MoodSwingers has studied with him, Arlene Bushop has penned lyrics for him ("If I Could Sleep"), Melanie Doane has done a duet with him ("Change Your Mind"), Holly Cole appears on his _Haunted_Album_ (as does Melanie and Carlos del Junco), Holly and Kim Stockwood occasionally appear as guest musicians at his shows, covered Brian Adams's "Run to You" for the BMG Lounge compilation... etc., etc. James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Oct 1998 18:01:19 PDT From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: Re: Dahmnait Doyle James wrote: >Hey, did you notice that Melanie Doane thanks Dahmn in the credits? Ooh, bad news, James. I think she's called it quits. I know she's no longer on Nettwerk, and last I heard, she's basically 'retired' from the music scene. Too bad, though - I always thought she was way better than the critics gave her credit for, and not many people ever really got to hear her solo stuff. I suppose the timing was off, too. In these days of the female singer-songwriter, she coulda made it. - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Oct 1998 18:11:26 PDT From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: Re: Cate Friesen, Anne Bourne, Dahmnait Doyle I wrote, and Steve replied: >>can only get better!
