Who did they choose? Hole, Joni Mitchell, Sheryl Crow, PJ Harvey, and...Lhasa. The review rightfully puts her in good company and remarks, "LA LLORONA mellifluously moves from bittersweet to bloodcurdling, from caressing to carnivalesque--and you don't have to understand a lick of Spanish to enjoy it." http://www.atlantic-records.com/Lhasa I _love_ Lhasa, her bright smile and deep latin lyrics was one of the best moments of TO Lilith '97. She seems to have a deep passion for life that runs like a great river through all her work. A dark-tinged whammy like that last glass of sangria that you _knew_ you shouldn't have had. That wonderfully smoky voice, those catchy Spanish phrasings; Neruda, Paz and Marquez, with more than a bit of Piaf packed into that happy petite body. She's a wow, and major kudos to Atlantic for seeing this. They've made some excellent signings this year, esp. wrt to Canadian Music! People were standing around in clusters all over the place swaying to the Latin-tinged sounds. >that last glass of sangria that you _knew_ you shouldn't have had. >That wonderfully smoky voice, those catchy Spanish phrasings; >Neruda, Paz and Marquez, with more than a bit of Piaf packed into >that happy petite body. Hopefully they actually work Lhasa's album, though, and don't treat it as a "world music", specialty-type thing. That would be too limiting - I think Lhasa's got good potential as a 'crossover' world music artist. There was rain? There was ground for standing? Honestly, I felt like I'd drank a full pitcher of sangria. I'm still playing the eponymous _Lhasa_ and a weekly basis. One of my many fond memories from TO-LF'97. > I know! What's up with these *tiny* singers with big, big voices? > Holly McNarland comes to mind... Natalie Merchant, Sarah Slean, Emm Gryner, Lhasa, (dunno about Holly though, she just seems, um, thin...) ... I think it started with Piaf. That Big Voice, little body thing. Incidentally, or not so incidentally, since Brel and Piaf are often mentioned in the same sentence (or is it just _me_? :-P ) Lhasa lists Jacques Brel as a big influence. I can see it, I could easily see her doing "Ne Me Quitte Pas" and doing it justice. Wow. Double wow. Its one of the most beautiful, painful songs in existence. Gorgeous in the depth of emotion and haunting in its universality. Actually, come to think of it, and knowing somewhat everyone's musical taste here... ...go find a Jacques Brel album... one of the greatest hits ones... ...you don't need to know french to understand.* > Yay! Yep, it's great! Like Bazaar said, you don't even have > to understand Spanish to get into her wonderfully eclectic music. I would agree, my Spanish is only icky at best. I'm getting better reading Neruda in english and spanish side by each, but not much. I'm working up to viewing Marquez' "The Fable of the Beautiful Pidgeon Fancier". On day soon. She's got BIG crossover potential, so if anyone from Atlantic is listening, er, listen! :-) Sarah Slean/Mia Sheard: I'm just gonna put this here, since I'm too lazy for another message. Wonderful concert last night with the troubadoural Mia Sheard opening for the delightful Miss Slean. Its the first time I'd heard Mia live and I was quite impressed. She has a way with a song. Its a bit darker and, hmm, bigger? than what I'd expect from the standard singer/songwriter. I was reminded a bit of Rufus Wainright, I suspect to an extent that they are cut from the same cloth as it were. I like short sets by both of them, since, at least I feel there's a need to digest such richness. Sarah debuted two, I think, new songs. I've misplaced my notes for this afternoon so I can only describe the first one. It's about having someone tell you that, "they have nothing to offer you" and how that the feeling that "offering yourself" isn't enough. It was simply,... ...bellisima! This was quite a magic little moment, (Brava!) about on par, perhaps a bit above Sarah's last concert at the Reverb. Replete with a full string section, including our favourite busybee cellist, the kind and daring "Six Degrees of" Kevin Fox! (Who I personally am waiting for some solo gigs and solo material from! Bueno!) Sarah has been improving greatly over the past little while. That ineffable potential that we few, we happy few, saw, now some years ago, I think is well on the way to being realized. Her leaps in the last few months have been in orchestration and arrangement, what she's doing with her songs is making richly textured masterpieces and her new stuff is miles above the Universe EP. See her. Soon. James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== P.S. Sorta... * This all sort of ties in with an all too brief conversation Steve and I were having with Simeon Ross from Red Autumn Fall. I love music. Even and sometimes especially, when I can't understand it. Its difficult for me to grasp how some people can just not get or not _need_ to listen to music all the time. Which ties into a conversation I had with Sarah nearly a year ago now, there is music in all things, the rustle of the leaves, the crunch of footfalls on gravel, the rhythm of the wind; everything. I'm not sure where I'm going with this, oh, maybe it just the 3 hours sleep I had, maybe its the super long hikes I've been taking, or something in the water in Guelph... ...but, man, music makes this planet so much, so friggin' much better. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 1998 15:41:15 -0400 (EDT) From: James McGarry Subject: And Speaking of Lhasa... Tickets $15 advance, available ONLY at Ticketmaster (613) 755-1111 (http://www.rootsworld.com/rw/feature/lhasa.html) LHASA grew up on roads that led to Mexico, the western U.S., and then, as an adult, to Canada, where she found her voice as a singer. And an unusual singer she is. Part BILLIE HOLLIDAY, EDITH PIAF, JACQUES BREL and TOM WAITS, she has developed into an amazing latin jazz diva. Her compositions are inspired by La Llorona, the Aztec mythological creature who puts a spell on men by her singing and turns them into stone with her kiss. The words flow, most of them in Spanish, some in English, and some in French. She's been the Quebec representative at the Bourges Festival in France, was awarded a FELIX in the world-music category at the Gala de l'Adisq and picked up a JUNO AWARD for Best Global Album of the Year.
