Oh, nothin' nasty, the Inbred thing is guitar and drums, though in this case not a bass guitar, but a very, funky odd twelve-string electric. They were an awful lot better than I expected, cranking out an interesting, if not enjoyable, blues-based vibe. There were some Jim Morrison as the Lizard King moments, but they were far enough between to keep things friendly-happy. One of the brothers would be a good cross between Jim and maybe David Byrne at times. I felt they would do a lot better with a rounder sound, maybe adding a bass and... ..drool antique keyboards ala Ray Manzarek to complete the Doors motif. Interesting and people to keep an eye on. My real reason for venuring forth into the cold nice was to warm up with a nice COAL fire. It's been three years and two months since I'd seen Vancouver's COAL live, the very first NxNE. I've never waited as impatiently for a band to release a follow up album and to tour eastward. COAL is pretty much in a genre by themselves. Oh, you might call it western goth or their preferred term "torch noir". Nicole Steen has a pretty voice, an urban and urbane Patsy Cline if you will. She's the main songwriter as well and COAL's lyrics tend to have a dark/bright hopeless/hopefull juxtaposition. In my more hyphen-obssessed moments I like to call it country-torch-punk-lounge-goth-western-ambient-noire. If you can imagine Patsy Cline fronting Rhea's Obsession or Dead Can Dance you'd be half way there. Now that I've got ya to that unique place in can-music that COAL darkly occupy... ...this was a fantasitic 18-song set. However much I was a COAL fan before, whao, they have improved in so many ways. Two really, really good new songs (on the new CD) are "The Dark" (which Nicole says she finds it odd when people like, its not normal COAL fare, its much more goth) and "Anti-cool" which I think is my new favourite COAL song and a personal anthem :-) (Though I do stand by my statement, "Emm Gryner is the coolest person I know." Its just that, well, I'm not :-) ) It was also good to renew aquaintances with Nicole (who is a fountain a canadian music knowledge, I bow humbly at the depth and breadth of her knowledge! probably second only to Nardwuar) and Marcus Rogers COAL's able bassist and filmmaker. Look for COAL in an upcoming film (Spring '99) which also features a cameo by Nardwuar the Human Serviette. The line up for the soundtrack sounds AMAZING with a lot of mondo cool Vancouver bands, some of whom I've likely mentioned to those of you know know me personally in several of my many rantings :-) A must see/ must listen! COAL play one more gig in Toronto before heading back to Vancouver, Rancho Relaxo this Friday, September 11. You can also see their video on Much (ondemand@muchmusic.com) for Invisible Man, the first single off their new CD "OneTrackMind" (its also on the CD in QuickTime format). Really cool. I was so happy I completely lost track of time and didn't even leave until about 10 to 3!!! Sleep Ha! For those of a goth or country or strange, outre bent, go check out COAL, tell 'em I sent ya! Ask for a fridge magnet! :-) Take Care! James. P.S. If you've see or heard, check out a documentary called "Juicy Danger Meets Burning Man", which I loved before I knew that Marcus' company did the post-pro on. Very neat, features ex-Jim Rose-it and scenester Tom Comet and backing music by Kinnie Starr's DJ, fellow Guelphite Jacob Cino. P.P.S. Really go see COAL, really! P.P.P.S. Also request Emm's video for "Summerlong" on Much at ondemands@muchmusic.com ! ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ End of canadian-music-digest V1 #70 ***********************************
